7-Zip has been my default archiver for years and I recommend it to everyone who asks. The 7z format with LZMA2 produces noticeably smaller archives than plain zip for large backups, which really adds up with cloud storage. A few tips: the right-click context menu integration makes extracting a one-click job; the built-in AES-256 encryption is genuinely strong for sensitive archives - just use a long passphrase; and the split-archive option is handy when uploads have size limits. It also opens RAR, TAR, and ISO files without fuss. Lightweight, no nag screens, does exactly what it promises.

This is my tribute to your great 7-zip, Igor Pavlov.

That’s all well and good, but the programme has had trouble extracting Asus BIOS files for years. You can check this by downloading the BIOS for any Asus motherboard model – 7-Zip won’t extract it properly. An error will appear: "Some data is located beyond the end of the payload" However, if you use the built-in archiver in Windows 10/11, it will extract the Asus BIOS archive correctly.

I recently just downloaded this from this page, and used the big "DOWNLOAD" link shown in GREEN at the top left of this webpage. After downloading the file named "7z2600-x64.exe", I uploaded it to virustotal.com, and it detected this: Bkav Pro W64.AIDetectMalware Acronis (Static ML) NOT sure if this is a false positive.. but I avoided installing.
