Nomonde Khalo is a PhD student at the University of Cape Town and a Research Fellow at the Hasso Plattner Institute. Her research focuses on Natural Language Processing (NLP) and Clinical NLP, with a particular interest in leveraging artificial intelligence to improve healthcare communication. Her PhD work integrates AI techniques with linguistic principles to develop algorithms that simplify and personalize medical texts for lay readers while preserving critical information. Driven by a passion for bridging the communication gap in healthcare, she aims to enhance patient comprehension and accessibility of medical information.
Nomonde holds a Master’s and Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science from the University of the Witwatersrand. She has worked as a Research Intern at IBM and a Game Development Lecturer at Vega Institute. Prior to her research career, she gained industry experience as a Data Analyst at Nedbank and Momentum Limited. Beyond her academic pursuits, Nomonde is actively involved in community development, tutoring computer programming and mathematics. She also serves as a committee member for Deep Learning IndabaX South Africa, supporting the spread of knowledge and capacity in machine learning across the African continent.
