Mac Mail in a mess

I seem to be unable to delete messages in my inbox. With the focus on the unwanted message, I have tried simply pressing the delete-key, dragging the message to the. left to expose the red band, then clicking that, and lastly clicking the rubbish-bin image in the menu-bar. In each case, the message disappears, only for it to reappear later. I have tried to rebuild the inbox, but but clicking Rebuild produces no response.

When did this problem arise? Who is the email host? Exchange, IMAP or POP3?

The trouble started about a week ago. The host is IMAP.

Have you tried observing what happens when you access the (unknown) provider's webmail?

If you delete on Mac…does it reflect, if even temporarily, at the webmail page?

If you delete on webmail page does macOS Mail reflect the deletion? Does a webmail deletion ever reappear anywhere?

If I delete a message in Mail, the message is NOT deleted in the webmail.

If however I delete the message in the webmail, the meSSage IS deleted in Mail.

Check the Mail settings for the Mailbox Behaviors of that account to see if anything looks off. I don't think a rule at the server would affect things like this.

My guess is you'll have to do a complete wipe of the mail account and reload everything back from the server.

I clicked the minus-sign to remove my Gmail-account from Apple mail. I then reinstalled it.

That is not a complete removal. There are files in your User Library that have to be removed. When you leave them in there the "new" account just adopts the old ones along with any issues they might be causing.

You aren't the first to do this. There should be some good instructions on these forums or somewhere else on the web. It's quite easy if you only have the one account in Mail.

I have a gMail account and an iCloud account

On My Mac contains very little, andnothing ofany consequences.
