Why was the Civil War South called "the Chivalry"

Southern chivalry explained

"Confederate apologia additionally flourished during the Golden Age of Fraternalism that manifested in large part in the universities of the South" . . .

"Southern chivalry, or the Cavalier myth, was a popular concept describing the aristocratic honor culture of the Southern United States during the Antebellum, Civil War, and early Postbellum eras. The archetype of a Southern gentleman became popular as a chivalric ideal of the slave owning planter class, emphasizing both familial and personal honor in addition to the ability to defend either by force if necessary. Southern chivalry is today seen as an attempt to justify the racist and patriarchal stratification of Southern society, with the goal of maintaining or legitimizing the human rights abuses of American slavery.[1] [2]

Prior to the Civil War this concept of a gentleman's honor was frequently used as a basis for duels and other forms of extrajudicial violence, most notably the caning of Charles Sumner by Preston Brooks, and contributed to the militarization of the South by encouraging young men to be taught at military schools.

By the later Antebellum era, the term had taken on an ironic meaning for Northerners and abolitionists, among whom it was used as a pejorative to describe what was perceived as the barbarism of Southern slave owners and their hostility and duplicity in dealing with the North, as was particularly seen in various political caricatures before and during the war.

In the modern era the romanticization of Southern chivalry became a core aspect of the Lost Cause myth, which portrays the as a morally and culturally superior civilization defending its honor against a materialistic and immoral North." . . . More...

The Plantation & Chivalry [ushistory.org]   . . . "A proper gentleman, it was believed, should be a lawyer, politician, planter, or military man, rather than be a businessman or other occupation. Because plantation owners had their money tied up in property and slaves, many of the generation could not afford to send their children to prestigious colleges, but were able to send them to the esteemed military schools. This created a generation of very able and talented military officers. Many were trained at West Point and Virginia Military Institute. They held to old-fashioned ideals of what honorable warfare meant. When the Civil War arrived, most of the military leadership talent was southern."

Ergo, history tells us how the Confederacy had better leaders who I have to guess were only overcome by the larger and better equipped Northern armies. TD

Meet America’s New Un-Americans… the DSA

 The American Spectator

Barack Obama was devious enough not to give details when he called for a “fundamental transformation” of the United States of America. But these people? They’re not hiding anything. They’re sharing their vision in media interviews with stunned reporters (including CNN reporters) and with slick pamphlets posted online with full transparency.

"An all-time favorite whipping boy of the American Left is the House Committee on Un-American Activities. Most readers wouldn’t recognize the group by its proper acronym — HCUAA — but they certainly know the Left’s reordered, twisted acronym: the dread “HUAC.” That translates to the “House Un-American Committee.” Improperly rendered, yes, but the label has stuck. You can succeed at such propaganda when your ideology pervades the media, Hollywood, academia, the culture — what we at The American Spectator have long called the Kultursmog.

"Note the cynical repackaging of the committee and its mission: The Left, and especially far-left communist organs such as the Daily Worker, attempted to recast this important committee of the U.S. House of Representatives as un-American itself. That was a rather audacious move by the comrades, given who they were, and what the committee was not. The fact is that HCUAA had been run by Democrats and Republicans alike throughout its existence — by solid, bipartisan congressmen. The Democrat chairs of the House Committee on Un-American Activities ran from Rep. Martin Dies (D-TX) in the 1930s, to Rep. Francis Walter (D-PA), to Rep. Richard Ichord (D-MO) in the 1970s.

"No, dear progressive snowflake, “HUAC” wasn’t run by villainous Republican Joe McCarthy. Senator McCarthy was, uh, in the Senate — where, incidentally, he was often joined by stalwart anti-communist Democrats like John F. Kennedy of Massachusetts, Pat McCarran of Nevada, James Eastland of Mississippi, and Thomas Dodd of Connecticut, the latter two being anti-communist pillars on the Senate Judiciary Committee, and chair and vice chair of the outstanding Subcommittee on Internal Security. Those guys exposed countless self-proclaimed “progressives” as in fact closet communists. For this, they have never been forgiven by the Left and forever vilified by liberal historians.

"Nonetheless, the task of “HUAC” was a noble one. It was charged with investigating extremist elements within the United States, whether they be fascists, communists, American sympathizers of Nazis (the German-American Bund), or American Bolsheviks. The committee members were tasked with defending America, and they thus wanted to know whether certain fifth-column elements were working to subvert the system from within. The American Left, of course, had no problem when the reviled “HUAC” was investigating closet Nazis, but as soon as the committee set its sights on Soviet supporters, well — hell’s bells — that was downright un-American!" . . .

If You Hate America, Why Don't You Leave?

"Although there are some Americans who make dramatic statements about expelling them, is that the kind of image we want to portray to the rest of the world about how we respect human rights?"

"For years, I’ve tried to understand the growing rancor between the Muslim community and the American population. It seems there is never a time when the two groups have lived comfortably with each other. And in these times of Muslims also becoming part of our political community, of the strife in the Middle East, and the ongoing conflicts in Muslim-majority countries, there is no sign of relationships improving.

"Although some Muslims have migrated here and have made satisfying lives for themselves, a large number of Muslims are dissatisfied or uncomfortable with their new home. It has been helpful to try to understand the mindset of these Muslims and then explore the implications of their beliefs and commitments.

"Muslims and native-born Americans have fascinating and different explanations for the Muslim dislike of the U.S. If you ask Muslims, many of them will say that their reactions are due to the recent steps that the Trump administration has taken against Muslims in this country and around the world: . . .

"Son of a Hamas founder, Mosab Hassan Yousef, warns what is to come for America if we do not fight for our values."

El-Sayed: KISS And Tell

"Having suffered the lash of Islam in Iran, Amirizadeh undoubtedly harbors deep concerns over a candidate who openly admits everything he does in life is to honor Islam."

James Zumwalt - American Thinker     "Last week was interesting for anyone concerned about Islam’s growing influence in America.

"Recently revealed were the 2009 remarks made by Michigan US Senate nominee, Democrat and avowed Muslim, Abdulrahman Mohamed El-Sayed.  He reportedly shared that, while in medical school, he chose to obtain a loan that was compliant with Islamic law—Sharia. In fact, he proclaimed that, as a Muslim, he would always follow Sharia in “everything” he ever sought to do.

"Some may dismiss these remarks, made 17 years ago, as those of a man simply dedicated deeply to his religion—one he embraces totally separate from his political views and life in general. However, such a dismissal would be a big mistake for Michigan voters in the upcoming election.

"While U.S. legislators embracing Christianity and most other religions do leave their religion at the door to represent their constituency on matters concerning their well-being, Muslims dedicated to their “religion” do not—and cannot. There is no issue amongst non-Muslim legislators complying with the U.S. Constitution’s First Amendment mandate prohibiting the establishment of a national religion and protecting the free exercise of religion; but for Muslim legislators, there is.

"The above mandate gives rise to the philosophical and jurisprudential concept that there can be no state-mandated religion—i.e., “separation of church and state.” But, what if such separation is impossible because one has declared his total commitment to a religion that disallows such a separation?" . . .

. . . "For the record, El-Sayed could well give false testimony in response. Such is permissible under Islam. While honesty is supposedly honored, three situations allow Muslims to lie. These include lying to resolve a situation between two individuals, to a spouse in order to please her, and to be deceptive about an ongoing war. Clearly, as Islam’s ultimate goal is the submission of all religions to it, such a war between Islam and all other religions is in progress" . . .

Miller REFUSES To Take Back The Hezbollah Charge On Tlaib — 'I Said It, I Own It, I Stand By It'

Freya Explains Politics

"This breakdown examines a floor clash in the House of Representatives over Lebanon policy that escalated into a rare, hours-long procedural standoff. During debate on a resolution calling for the withdrawal of U.S. forces from Lebanon, Rep. Max Miller of Ohio accused Hezbollah of terrorism and directed pointed remarks at Rep. Rashida Tlaib of Michigan, prompting her to invoke a seldom-used House rule demanding his words be struck from the record. What followed was not a quick correction but a 70-minute freeze of official business, as the chamber's presiding officer worked to apply Section 361 of the House Rules and Manual, the provision governing when remarks are ruled out of order for impugning a member's patriotism or loyalty.

"We trace how the confrontation reflects tensions well beyond a single exchange: years of prior friction between the two lawmakers, procedural questions about the resolution's underlying premise, and a fight over institutional decorum that briefly halted the House altogether. The video also highlights an underexamined wrinkle: doubts about the resolution itself came not only from Miller but from senior members of Tlaib's own party, complicating the narrative once the vote was finally held. We look at how the clerk's formal reading of the disputed words back into the record, Miller's public refusal to withdraw them, and a colleague's subsequent restatement of his position on the floor combined to turn a debate over Lebanon policy into a case study in how the House handles allegations of misconduct on the floor, and what the episode signals about the state of decorum in Congress."

. . . "She was also a member of a private Facebook group whose members glorified Hamas in the immediate aftermath of October 7, posting photos of Hamas fighters posing with elderly hostages and celebrating the slaughter of Israeli soldiers as “achievements.” The group’s founder — one of Tlaib’s key fundraisers — has posted videos questioning the Holocaust and calling Jews “satanic.”

A controversial pro-Palestinian gathering in Detroit is drawing scrutiny for featuring speakers with extremist views—including two former Israeli prisoners released in a Hamas deal—alongside Rep. Rashida Tlaib, D-Mich., a prominent anti-Israel congresswoman

Tlaib has a favorite term for any who do not like Hamas killing toddlers with their bare hands (entirely the opinion of TD):   Foul mouthed Rashida Tlaib rouses the Jew-hating rabble: ‘motherf**kers! We ain’t going anywhere’ Her name for President Trump..

The perfect Democrat candidate

  Don Surber

"Talarico claims to be a biblical scholar but insists, “God is nonbinary.” Look, if God wanted Chastity Bono to be a boy, He would have made her one."

"They say nobody’s perfect, but I disagree. I just pitched the perfect political candidate to the DNC, which desperately wants to avoid the disaster in Michigan's senatorial race known as Abdulrahman Mohamed El-Sayed, the doctor who has never seen a patient.
"He was captain of the football team at his pricy private high school, oops, a prestigious public school in a pricy neighborhood.
"But the Big Mo (for Mohamed) wrote ahead of the 2023 Super Bowl, “Football is very much associated with a particularly masculine and, oftentimes, toxically masculine culture. And so much of it was about—you wanted to be able to get back up and play for your team, and you really aren’t allowed to show pain or vulnerability. That’s part of the sport.”
"His hatred of football runs even deeper today.
"He said, “You think about all the wars that we fight abroad, all of the sordid history of oppressing other people in the name of this American idea, right? Whether it was, quote, Manifest Destiny and destroying Native Americans, or it was the transatlantic slave trade where, you know, folks who, quote, founded this country on the backs of Native folks that they destroyed, then captured people, enslaved them, and had them work their fields because they thought it was their right. Right. And all of this, like a lot of these narratives, you kind of see echoed in the ethos of football.”
"Everything is about slavery to Democrats—just as it was nearly 200 years ago
"Abdulrahman Mohamed El-Sayed also hates Mackinac Island—a storied vacationland for Michiganders and their Michigeese. He said in a 2020 documentary about him, “I hate Mackinac so much. Every time I’ve ever come here, I’ve hated it. Why am I here?”

"What’s next? An Ohio State Buckeyes bumper sticker?

"He’s the Muslim Graham Platner without the Nazi tattoo or military service."  . . .

. . . "But looking elsewhere: The DNC was impressed. A committee member pointed out that Hell, Michigan, is in Livingston County, which is 95% white and more than 50% male. Trump carried the county by 24 points two years ago. Finally, they asked me his name. I said Hitler. Adolf Hitler. " . . .More...

From the Top Rope: Retired Four-Star General Blasts Media for Portraying Lincoln Warriors As Victims

After six months in the transport troop bay with 200 Marines, CNN could have got numerous anti-Navy stories from us. But this was what Marines do when serving as Marines. I have never regretted a moment of it, but should I complain, CNN would be at my door for an interview. TD

Teri Christoph – RedState

"Here's the thing: the legacy media only cares about the military when it's politically expedient to do so. The rest of the time, they couldn't care less about hot dogs being served in the mess instead of corn dogs."

"Once the legacy media has their claws in a story that they think will reflect badly on President Trump, they'll beat the poor dead horse until there's nothing left but glue, facts be damned.

And that's exactly what is going on with the narrative they're trying to build around the conditions aboard the USS Abraham Lincoln (CVN 72), which has been on an extended deployment to the Middle East with precious few days in port.

"As you would expect, some of the 5,000 Sailors and Marines aboard the floating city have struggled with the extended time at sea, something U.S. Central Command (CENTCOM) chief Adm. Brad Cooper addressed after visiting the carrier over the weekend, saying in a statement that his time aboard was “awe-inspiring” and that he saw “camaraderie, teamwork and resilience.”

"This doesn’t mean that all is perfect," said Cooper. "Find any of the nearly 4 million Navy veterans in America today and they will likely tell you that service at sea for long periods isn’t for everyone. It is uniquely challenging and tough, and every single one of us, including me, reacts to stressors in different ways."

"It's a hardship for the families waiting at home, too. FaceTime calls help, but aren't a replacement for having your loved one by your side. So, some complaints have been made from those aboard who are eager to get home. Out of 5,000 people, some just aren't going to be happy about the situation (and those who are really suffering mentally, said Cooper, are getting the help they need).

"The media headlines, however, are blaring the best the theater kids could come up with: “Shocking Texts Reveal Sailors’ Nightmare in Trump’s War.” “War-Beleaguered Crew of USS Abraham Lincoln Will Finally Get Some Relief.” “Sailor’s texts reveal deteriorating conditions on USS Abraham Lincoln.”

"They had just gotten off their fainting couches from the "decoy" story, and now this.

"Along comes retired Gen. Jack Keane to call out the media’s overheated portrayal of life aboard the Lincoln and defend the Sailors whose extraordinary service has been reduced to nothing more than a cheap media narrative. “I’ve never seen such misrepresentation in the media of the actual facts that took place," Keane remarked Monday on Fox News' America’s Newsroom." . . .  More...

UPDATED: CNN Reporter Disrupts Ceremony for 16-Year-Old Hero

 Independent Sentinel

"Ryder Williams made a very nice statement and is a great role model. That didn’t stop a disrespectful loudmouth reporter from CNN trying to disrupt the event."

"Ryder Williams was honored in the Oval Office today for gallantly saving the life of a 10-year-old boy. The video of Ryder holding on to the boy while waves whipped them around went viral, and President Trump promised to honor him, and he did. A CNN reporter attended and engaged in rude, performative drama to disrupt the event and embarrass the president. The President had to tell her to be silent so now the media has their soundbite for the day"

"President Trump spoke with the boy who nearly drowned, Nathaniel Rai, and his family, joking with him at times, and praising him at others, promising him a long life. Hopefully, God delivers on that. . .

"The reporter, Kristen Holmes, then started screaming, and Trump had to silence her. It was obviously planned and meant to disrupt the event.  If CNN can ruin a nice, feel-good moment, they will. They are corrupt and agenda-driven. This reporter was probably congratulated by her comrades when she got back to the office. They don’t want the President to have any good moments." . . . More...

CNN Throws a Hissy Fit After Trump Humiliates Reporter — There's Just One Problem . . . "The president invited the White House press pool into the Oval Office earlier Monday as he met with with a 16-year-old lifeguard who went viral on social media last month for rescuing a boy struggling in extremely rough surf at a California beach.

That lifeguard, Ryder Williams, was joined by the boy he saved, 10-year-old Nathaniel Rai, as the president awarded Ryder a civilian honor for his bravery that day.

When the press was invited to ask a few questions, CNN's Kristen Holmes opted to ignore the boys – and the heroism being honored – to go right into the gutter with this question:" . . .

Now is the Time for Iran’s Total Defeat

"In matters of war and peace, it is vital to think and act in the context of time, place, and history. The U.S. conduct of war with Iran must be thought of this way."

Scott S. Powell

"Iran is already a militarily defeated nation. To allow this evil, suicidal regime to rebuild and reconstitute itself would be a tragic missed opportunity to liberate the vast majority of Iranian people who want to live as free people under some form of democracy."

In Iran, US Navy under a Democrat Administration

"In matters of war and peace, it is vital to think and act in the context of time, place, and history. The U.S. conduct of war with Iran must be thought of this way.

"In fact, there are fundamental similarities between the war against the Shia Mullah regime in Iran and the War against Nazi Germany that started World War II. Both Nazi Germany and today’s Shia mullah regime in Iran were and are evil regimes, with no respect for human life, and worse, an all-consuming hatred and commitment to the annihilation of the Jewish people. If we say we would have stopped Nazi Germany if only we had known they would undertake a holocaust, then we had better wake up and defeat the Mullah-terrorist-IRGC regime in Iran now.

"Let’s revisit what happened before the Holocaust. By the mid-1930s, Adolf Hitler had already begun dismantling the post-World War I treaty provisions: rearming Germany in violation of the Treaty of Versailles (1935), remilitarizing the Rhineland (1936), and annexing Austria in the Anschluss (March 1938) -- all without serious Western resistance. Each step convinced Hitler that Britain and France lacked the will to stop him.

Obama/ Kerry praised Iran

"Today, the Iranian regime may assess U.S. vacillation in a similar way that Hitler viewed the lack of resolve in Britain and France at that time.

"In the summer of 1938, Hitler turned to annexing Czechoslovakia, piecemeal starting with the area known as Sudetenland -- a border region with a large ethnic German population. Backed by the Sudeten German Party, Hitler succeeded in whipping up claims of Czech persecution of ethnic Germans and demanded the region be ceded to Germany.

"British prime minister Neville Chamberlain made three personal flights to Germany to negotiate directly with Hitler, culminating in a four-power conference in Munich led by Chamberlain, French Premier Édouard Daladier, Hitler, and Italy's Benito Mussolini. Mussolini was the key actor in brokering the final terms, and would go on to become an ally of Hitler. It is noteworthy that Pakistan, which Iran has supported in several territorial disputes, has been brokering the failed peace negotiations between Iran and the United States." . . .More...

Trump Signals the End to Talks With Iran As the US Takes Full Control of the Strait of Hormuz – RedState   "As my colleague Ward Clark reported, Monday marked the end of the Memorandum of Understanding (MOU), the signing of which precipitated the beginning of a 60-day ceasefire of military operations against Iran. The MOU is officially DOA. On Monday, President Donald Trump called for Iran to "put up the white flag of surrender," and declared that the administration had a backchannel to the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC)." . . .

Bill Maher Has BRUTAL Message For Islam Migrants (Language)

AfterMath - Home

Significant article even with much regrettable language. TD:

"No other liberal comedian (and few conservative ones) would take on Islam and Muslim migrants the way Bill Maher does.
"Comedian and talk show host Bill Maher has a long-standing, highly controversial critique of Islam, characterizing it as a major threat to Western liberal values. His outspoken stance has sparked fierce public debates and high-profile clashes with guests. He has often described Islam as the “Motherload of Bad Ideas,” leading to accusations of bigotry and Islamophobia from other liberals and terror-linked Muslim groups like CAIR (Council on American Islamic Relations)..."

Mamdani's FREE Grocery Plan BACKFIRES As New Yorkers See What's Actually Inside

William Reports News   "New York City's plan to open five publicly funded grocery stores is colliding with the very businesses it promised to protect. This breakdown traces how bodega leader Radhames Rodriguez's endorsement of Mayor Zohran Mamdani hinged on a promise of consultation, and how the plan that followed—thirty percent discounts on staples, funded through a subsidized model where the city covers construction, rent, and property taxes—has left small grocers questioning whether they can survive next to a competitor operating without their overhead. We examine internal city records showing the stores will skip butcher counters, hot food, and the high-margin items bodegas depend on, while undercutting the staples families spend most on every week.

"The deeper story here is about who absorbs the cost of "affordable" groceries and what it means when government enters direct retail competition with small, often immigrant-owned businesses. We look at the economics behind grocery margins nationally, the failed precedents in Baldwin, Florida and Erie, Kansas, and the pointed remarks from Democratic Socialists of America co-chair Gustavo Gordillo suggesting struggling bodegas "shouldn't have been in that business in the first place." We also examine the political fault lines this has exposed within the Democratic Party itself, from Governor Kathy Hochul's public defense of free enterprise to City Council Speaker Julie Menin's unspoken reservations, and the emerging legal challenge from an immigrant-led business coalition. Finally, we unpack the administration's plan for a membership card system to monitor purchases—and what the gap between the promise of "free groceries" and the mechanics being built actually reveals about the program's real cost and timeline."

Ann Coulter & Hasan Piker HEATED Debate on Immigration & Trump

VIDEO: I met the weasel, Hasan Piker, in 2018   Recently, someone asked me if I’d ever met Hasan Piker and I said no, but then a friend sent me this video from 2018. You can see why I found him unmemorable.

"Ann Coulter and Hasan Piker join Elex Michaelson on "The Issue Is:" for a fiery debate on the 2018 migrant caravan, President Trump's promised border wall, asylum policy, and whether Trump bears responsibility for the pipe bombs mailed to Democratic figures by Cesar Sayoc."
