One question haunts every ambitious tech professional: Specialist or generalist? The wrong answer stalls your career for years. Generalists wear every hat. Specialists know one thing inside out. Tech careers throw both types into the same pond and see who swims. Here's my take. If you're early in your career, go broad. Learn across domains. Build pattern recognition. Get a taste for what you hate and what you love. But if you want to stand out? You eventually need a spike. One core area you're known for. One problem you solve better than anyone. The best tech professionals are T-shaped. Deep expertise in one area (the vertical line), with enough breadth to collaborate across domains (the horizontal line). You need the zoom-in focus to solve hard problems, and the zoom-out perspective to solve the right ones. People who never specialise end up as "jack of all trades, master of none." People who specialise too soon get boxed in and their careers stall. Go wide, then go deep. I’m watching our toolsets evolve every day—automation, prevention, orchestration at every layer. SOAR is in, and it’s doing more of the heavy lifting. - LLMs are shaking the foundation. Know what’s open on my screen at all times? Teams, email… and an LLM. These models are changing how we solve problems, make decisions, and consume information. The shift is already here. - Risk acceptance is real. The volume of alerts is wild. At some point, it’s just not worth paying humans to chase 10,000 low-threat pings a day. Leaders are asking: what’s truly worth action? So what’s an aspiring SOC analyst to do? - Upskill. Learn SOAR. Python. Cloud. Risk. Automation. Adapt to the new tools and show your value. - Pivot. Telecom networks used to be judged mainly by speed and coverage. Today they also carry something deeper: trust, because more and more parts of society and the economy rely on them as operational backbones. Telecom operators now support far more than connectivity. Their networks sit underneath payments, healthcare, mobility, public services, industrial systems, and daily business activity. When communication networks stop being simple utilities and start supporting essential operations, reliability is no longer enough on its own. Trust enters the picture. That is why this shift matters. Reliability matters because networks must keep working during congestion, outages, cyber incidents, and emergency conditions. Data protection matters because privacy, identity, encryption, and access controls now travel across connected services every day. Transparency matters because people, companies, and institutions want clear visibility into service quality, incident handling, and responsibility. In this AI “new age,” the generalist will beat the specialist. ESPECIALLY in early career spaces and entry level jobs. I write an early careers newsletter called “the inside track 🏎️💨🏁” and every single week I curate over 100 unique early career opportunities i.e. internships, fellowships, programs, new grad jobs, etc. In other words, I spend at least 4 hours per week combing through job boards and career websites. Lately, I’ve noticed 1 common trend emerging – an uptick of internship and new grad job opportunities with titles and job descriptions that are more generalist or out-of-the-box as well as roles that require a combination of technical and humanities skills/competencies. Some examples: 🌟 LinkedIn’s “Associate Product Builder” FT Role – a program that combines product, design, and engineering into a role tailor-made for AI-native teams. 🌟 Atlassian’s Creative Operations Internship – a role that sits under marketing/creative, but requires literacy in AI tools, proficiency in automations, and data analytics tools. 🌟 IBM’s Technical Writer Internship – a role where the primary responsibilities are content creation, content management, and research but requires proficiency in version control, human-computer interaction design, and programming 🌟 Adobe’s Research Web Design and Development Internship – a role that sits under research and primarily focuses on web development/design but is seeking a journalism or communications major with some coursework in computer science. 🌟 Netflix’s Creative Innovation Internship – a role that supports storytelling & production but centers around technically evaluating how Generative (AI) Media tools can be used at Netflix So what does that mean for current students and upcoming new grads? The bottom of the career ladder is being completely redesigned. The job market prioritizes AI literacy, creativity, and adaptability. This is (IMO) how students and new grads can prepare themselves for the shifting job market: → Diversify and customize your education. “Customized degree” programs have been on the rise for a while i.e. USC Iovine, NYU Gallatin, but you can do this at almost any school with additional majors, minors, and electives → Pursue different types of experiences even those that seem “out of your lane” – ex. I was a CS major but did venture capital fellowships, pitch competitions, and case competitions → In terms of upskilling, go wide – in a world of work where certain job responsibilities and tasks are being swiftly replaced or obsoleted, the best characteristic you can have it the ability to learn fast PLUS, AI has essentially lowered the barrier to learning ANYTHING i.e. content creation, software engineering, etc. 👋 If we’ve never met before, hi, I’m Morgan – I’m a content creator who creates media around the intersection of tech/ai, career/work, and education. Cybersecurity Career Tips #1 If you want to enter the cybersecurity field, it’s not enough to just pick a list of courses, complete them, generate certificates, and think the job will come naturally. And it’s definitely not just about adding certifications to your resume that’s only one step in the process. It’s essential to learn what is applied in real work contexts. You don’t need to study C if you’ll never use it in your daily tasks. Your studies should be aligned with your actual needs. My first recommendation if you want to become a cybersecurity professional is to understand what the market is looking for. Analyze open positions in your region or remote roles, define the requirements for each position, and identify the practical skills you need. Platforms such as HackTheBox, TryHackMe, PortSwigger Academy, PentesterLab, and Root-Me are excellent for hands-on learning. I strongly recommend investing your time in acquiring real-world skills. Write write-ups, share your journey here on LinkedIn or other networks, build personal projects and publish them on GitHub, connect with other professionals, and expand your network both online and at industry events. Also, develop your soft skills. Communication is critical, even in a job interview. Being able to translate technical issues into business impact is just as important as technical knowledge. A common way to start a career is by working in consulting firms. There are many opportunities at different seniority levels. It may not be your dream job, but it opens doors. Prepare your resume for the positions you aim for and highlight the key points that match the role especially if specific knowledge is required. A resume will only be considered if it demonstrates the right skills, relevant training or certifications (to validate your expertise), and professional autonomy. And don’t limit your job search to LinkedIn. It’s great for networking, but when it comes to landing jobs, explore alternatives. Target companies that interest you and check their career pages many positions are never posted on LinkedIn. Above all, stay focused. Don’t try to learn everything at once. Concentrate on what will land you your first job, and then expand your knowledge base to increase your seniority or pivot to other areas.
