As MDI Executive Director Milica Pesic is heading to Bogotá to take part in Festival Gabo, where she will lead a Masterclass marking the launch of the Media Diversity Index: South America. Developed through a collaboration between the Media Diversity Research Centre and researchers from across South America and beyond, the Index explores diversity in media content and governance across five South American countries. Rather than offering definitive answers, it provides evidence, raises questions and puts forward recommendations to support more inclusive media. At Festival Gabo, we’ll share some of the report’s findings before opening the conversation to journalists, academics, civil society organisations, researchers and media professionals from across the region. We’re particularly interested in hearing local perspectives. What resonates? What have we overlooked? Which recommendations feel most useful? And where should this work go next? 📢 The SHEER is now a member of Reset! network, a coalition of independent organizations working at the intersection of culture and media. 📢 Being a member of Reset! network feels only fitting to our central values, considering that the membership requires a complete executive and operational independence from organizations that could meddle in our decisions and way of working. The SHEER's participation to this ecosystem of non-profits and largely grassroots initiatives is already inspirational, and will hopefully be empowering. The African Diaspora’s Game-Changing News Hub: How One Filmmaker Built the Platform We’ve Been Waiting For We talk about an incredible filmmaker who moved to the States in 2024 and created a free AI-powered media hub called Afro Diaspo—the first credible news platform designed specifically for Africans home and abroad. She realized that global Africans were drowning in scattered information and missing crucial news about home, so she combined her journalism degree and filmmaking expertise to build a one-stop hub for entertainment, politics, business news, and African market insights. Back in the moderator's seat, I had the opportunity to host PURA's National Numbering Plan panel. One of the biggest takeaways? The Gambia will transition from a 7-digit to a 9-digit telephone numbering system on 4 September, a significant change that will affect all mobile and fixed-line users. It was an engaging discussion on why the transition is necessary, what it means for consumers, and how the public can prepare.
