Local news anchor Dominique Dillon instinctively laughed, but under the desk, she pinched her right arm. Ouch. So this was real. The lights, the cameras, the mortifying fact that she had just fallen asleep on air. “Sleeping Beauty over here,” her co-anchor playfully jabbed. “What are you talking about?” she joked back. The night before, Dillon’s husband had pulled a double shift. Otherwise, he would have been around to help when her younger daughter resisted bedtime. Dillon didn’t make it to bed until nearly 11 p.m. Two and a half hours later, her alarm sounded. Commercial break. “You’re going viral right now,” a producer brightly informed her. The clip was all over Facebook and Dillon was mortified. But as the clip went viral, so did the support. Read more: https://wapo.st/3RValBq

For weeks, U.S. immigration officials alerted their colleagues about dangerous overcrowding at 26 Federal Plaza, where detainees were held in small rooms with no beds, showers or full-time medical staff. In the first four days of June 2025, the number of detainees in Hold Room 1, one of four holding rooms on the building's 10th floor, jumped from approximately eight to more than 80. The room is a square cell roughly 30 feet on each side, with hard floors, concrete benches and three metal toilets. The spaces reeked of unwashed bodies. People slept sitting up because there wasn’t enough space to lie down. And because of a shortage of medical staff, people with serious health conditions, including tuberculosis, an ovarian cyst and kidney failure, lacked proper care, texts and emails among ICE officials show. DHS declined to answer a detailed list of questions about its treatment of detainees at 26 Federal Plaza and temporary holding rooms around the country, citing the ongoing litigation. There are no laws governing the amount of space immigrant detainees must be provided within ICE field offices.

#ad Sustainability isn't just good for the planet. It's a smarter, more efficient way to solve real-world challenges, and that means it's good for business, too. Creator Sam Bentley takes a closer look at BASF's B2Last®, an innovation helping roads last longer while reducing maintenance, lowering energy use during production, cutting CO₂ emissions and creating safer conditions for workers and nearby communities. It's a strong example of how innovations designed with sustainability in mind can deliver tangible benefits for businesses, people and the planet.
