Funder retrenchment in progressive #philanthropy is a growing, worrying issue. A lot of funders are becoming #climate hushers, though they say they still care about #climatechange. Some of the larger philanthropies insist we should #uniteinadvance and protect #democracy, but too many frontline groups and movements remain poorly resourced at the very moment we need them. For my first piece in Common Dreams, I took a look at the #AI #datacenter resistance -- the best opportunity in a lifetime for funders who care about democracy, climate, and technology to fund a politically unifying fight that could win big for everyone. https://lnkd.in/e6_xCWWT

"Yet, funders often arrive to movements last, hopping on the bandwagon once an issue has become popular. The lag is structural: Philanthropy funds organizations, and the most effective groups in passionate moments often don’t have official names, let alone 501(c)(3)s or professional grant writers. Often, they start with a WhatsApp group, a church hall meeting or an improvised coalition of neighbors. By the time a grant cycle catches up to a movement, the legislative windows have sometimes passed... Climate Emergency Fund has moved more than a third of its 2026 grants to groups organizing around data centers and AI, sometimes before those groups have a name. It serves as a form of venture philanthropy: Fund early, move fast, stay close to the communities doing the work. We are already seeing funding requests arrive from four continents as resistance to AI infrastructure becomes an increasingly global phenomenon. " Great job Philip W. Eubanks Cathy Rogers and Saul Levin!!!

I'm thrilled to share this new op-ed in Waging Nonviolence, co-authored by Cathy Rogers, Saul Levin, and myself. In it, we look at how the fight against #AI #datacenters is already going global, and we lay out how you can join that fight -- and fund it! "The #climate movement has spent decades searching for an issue that is local, immediate, genuinely winnable and has broad political appeal. Data centers may prove to be exactly that. Communities have shown that these fights can be won. So how can others do it? And will the movement have the resources to take on the best-funded industry in history?" "The data centre fight is going global" Our director of research, Cathy Rogers, has co-authored a new op-ed in Waging Nonviolence with Saul Levin (Center for Nonviolent Conflict Research) and Philip Eubanks (Climate Emergency Fund), looking at how resistance to AI data centres is becoming a global movement. In the US, the wins are stacking up: a statewide moratorium moving through New York's Assembly, Seattle adopting one after residents sent over 96,000 emails, and a coalition of 500-plus organisations across 47 states. But the movement is growing far beyond the United States. The article shows how a small Dutch town beat Meta outright, explores Ireland's more uneven battle with the tech sector, and water rights campaigns in Chile and Uruguay against Google's data centre plans. In print today in newspapers across the country! The 2026 El Niño is a public safety emergency. But leaders aren’t taking action to prepare or warn the public. So we put this open letter in USA Today, the Miami Herald, San Francisco Chronicle, Chicago Sun Times, Boston Herald, and Austin American Statesman. It's signed by scientists, meteorologists, journalists, and concerned citizens including Adam McKay, Dr. Peter Kalmus, Mandy Moore, Woody Harrelson, Bill McKibben, Hannah Einbinder, Mark Ruffalo, Jane Fonda, Chelsea Handler, Joaquin Phoenix, and more because "the scale and threat of this coming warming event is simply too large to ignore in the name of business/politics as usual." Read the letter and send it to your state's leaders at elninowarning.com

⚡️Launching today on Generation Environment! We welcome awesome badass org Climate Emergency Fund for Gen E members to easily and automatically support via your roundup portfolios. Climate Emergency Fund is like venture capital for early-stage grassroots climate movements and campaigners. Their secret sauce is disruptive nonviolent climate activism, aka the stuff that gets noticed, gets media attention, and gains political leverage. Fighting fossil fuels and ending the fossil economy is their main theme, and lately they’re helping to build momentum for the incredible organic, decentralized anti (AI) data center movement that’s happening all across our country. CEF is working to scale this impressive show of citizen uprising to protect their communities from the unwanted land, water, air, and cognitive power grab by Big Tech and their political allies who are further embedding polluting energy sources into our lives. Power to the passionate and creative climate activists who simply need a little support to keep climate in the conversation and make it an issue we can’t ignore. And thanks to CEF, they can gain access to funding and training. We are proud to include Climate Emergency Fund on the Gen E Earth Philanthropy platform for members to support!
