How to control volume using pulseaudio and PipeWire
Done.

Note that not all distributions put the file you need to edit in the same place! For example, in Fedora it is located at /usr/share/X11/fonts/misc/fonts.alias while in Slackware it is in /usr/share/fonts/misc/fonts.alias
Unfortunately this information is a bit outdated, as many Linux distributions no longer use pulseaudio. Instead, they use PipeWire. But this can easily be modified: Keys DtKeyBindings { <Key>XF86AudioLowerVolume root|icon|window|ifkey f.exec "wpctl set-volume @DEFAULT_AUDIO_SINK@ -5%" <Key>XF86AudioRaiseVolume root|icon|window|ifkey f.exec "wpctl set-volume @DEFAULT_AUDIO_SINK@ +5%" <Key>XF86AudioMute root|icon|window|ifkey f.exec "wpctl set-mute @DEFAULT_AUDIO_SINK@ toggle" } I'd edit this wiki...
CI: normalize Ubuntu package workflows to Fedora Motif pipelines Golden Standard
No problem, glad I checked :)
My bad Jon! I selected the wrong source branch. Actually, I didn't select it, master is the default, sorry, opened too many similar MR's in a row, I did this one wrong. But I just placed the commit on my master branch and refreshed the merge request commits, so now it appears correctly. You can review and merge.

This one had some build failures with Tim's motif (sorry I did them a bit out of order). I will merge anyway.

CI: add Fedora 44 Thomas Motif master snapshot
With this patch, Tim's motif master snapshot, builds normally. https://github.com/johngrimmreaper/cdesktopenv/actions/runs/35172834010

Ah, this is better than what I was doing (I was checking for freetype2 on CDE's side during configure, in a yet-to-be-published merge request)

GitHub is removing Node.js 20 support from hosted Actions runners on September 23, 2026, so these updates are needed to avoid upcoming CI breakage.

yes i have of course checked the CDE screen saver params ,it does not change the behavior about that. This is not an imortant problem ,just a bit annoying when thinking to a big peace of code displayed to see it with less luminosity(approx 80% than the previous setting) when in deep thought about it :-) of course hitting a key or moving the mouse and the luminosity goes back to where it was (100% of its settings) when i build CDE i can not remember or even know what is PAM?
Any word on progress with this? I've been waiting for this so I could do a migration and use CDE as my primary desktop environment, which will also help me identify and fix more issues. :)
Yeah... So then my suspicion is that those WMs are doing something we are not. Did you build CDE with PAM support? It's the only thing I can think of offhand - that PAM is setting some things up that CDE might not be if there is no PAM support. I'm just reaching here - this is not a problem I've ever heard of before. I would check any logs you can find - of course CDEs ~/.dt/errorlog, sessionlog, system journal, Xorg logs, etc. The fact that you seem to always see it might help you to find out what...

Strange, i have approx 10 windows manager on this Linux and the only one that do that is CDE.

ill try this
Strangely enough, this turned out to be a Motif issue that went away with the latest commits in Tim's fork. This can be closed!
This might be less of a dtwm issue and more of an X11-in-general issue. Can you replicate this with another X11 window manager? e.g. FVWM, EMWM, Metacity, xfwm in XFCE, etc...

oh now I get what you are talking about, you are editing the text of the merge commit. And this text come from the merge request itself Yes do change that on your other pipeline as well, because source forge doesn't allow me do update/edit the merge request. Not sure if it is impossible or if I lack permission.
sure, merge only 1 or 2 pipelines today then, start by merging your motif pipelines
I basically had to redo the pipelines because I originally built them using older GitHub Actions that were pinned to Node.js 20. GitHub is removing Node.js 20 from hosted runners on September 23, so I had to update the Actions and rework the pipelines before they started breaking. Sorry for that, I used some old examples of pipelines I had, and I didn't pay attention into that. Including the debian and ubuntu pipelines I did, I will have to update them all before september 23rd too, because they...
CI: Add Fedora 44 validation with packaged Motif 2.3.8
Ok, will do. I have limited time right now, but can get to what I don't complete this evening. I'll see if I can get a couple in before I need to leave.
yeah sorry for the small commit message, I should have added more information, do that on all the other ones as well, it is better the pipeline is well explained.
I validated all the pipelines, they are ready to merge. The only caveat is that I did a script to analyze the logs, but as they all depend on this script, I had to add this same scrip on all of the merge requests but they are all the same, so there is no problem
I changed your merge commit message. Are the other MR's (124-128) supposed to be merged as well?
CI: Add Fedora 44 validation with Jon Motif master
From what I could tell, most distros are still using the older Motif 2.3.8 line, while Gentoo, Slackware-current and Alpine are already shipping Tim's Motif 2.5.2. So I have now created five separate Fedora CI pipelines covering: Fedora's packaged Motif 2.3.8 Jon Trulson's Motif 2.3.9 release Jon Trulson's current master Tim Hentenaar's Motif 2.5.2 release Tim Hentenaar's current master This should give us a very useful compatibility matrix for future Motif work. Any change to CDE can now be tested...
Fedora 39 / Jon Motif v2.3.9 release This merge request adds a source-build compatibility pipeline for the Jon Trulson Motif 2.3.9 release. The workflow intentionally uses Fedora 39 as its compatibility baseline. This older Jon Motif line currently requires source/build adjustments to compile cleanly with newer Fedora/GCC toolchains, so Fedora 39 allows us to test the existing Motif 2.3.9 code as it stands rather than modifying Motif simply to make the CI job green. Because Fedora 39 is EOL, the...
Fedora 39 downgrade / Jon Motif main snapshot I actually choose Fedora 39 for your pipelines Jon. But I can't edit the merge request, so I am putting the detailed descriptions here. This merge request adds a source-build compatibility pipeline tracking the current main branch of Jon Trulson's Motif repository. As with the fixed 2.3.9 pipeline, Fedora 39 is intentional. It provides the compatibility baseline for this Jon Motif implementation without requiring unrelated Motif source modifications solely...
This merge request adds a Fedora 44 source-build compatibility pipeline tracking Tim Theisen's Motif master branch. Unlike the v2.5.2 pipeline, this workflow intentionally tests the moving development version of Tim Motif. At the beginning of each run it resolves the current upstream master revision to an exact commit SHA so the tested Motif source remains identifiable and reproducible in the diagnostic evidence. Tim Motif is built separately under /opt/tim-motif, followed by a direct CDE source...

This merge request adds a Fedora 44 source-build compatibility pipeline for Tim Theisen's Motif v2.5.2 release. The workflow deliberately pins the exact v2.5.2 release rather than dynamically following the newest release. This gives CDE a stable and reproducible compatibility target for the newer Tim Motif codebase. The pipeline verifies that the Fedora Motif packages are not providing the tested library, builds Tim Motif from source under /opt/tim-motif, builds CDE under /usr/dt, and then performs...
This merge request adds a Fedora 44 source-build CI pipeline using the Motif 2.3.8 package provided directly by Fedora. The purpose of this pipeline is to provide the distro-Motif baseline for the compatibility matrix. It builds CDE directly from source and installs it under the traditional /usr/dt prefix, without introducing RPM packaging for CDE. The workflow also preserves detailed build diagnostics, runs the shared build-log analyzer, uploads the diagnostic artifacts, and uses a strict final...

Fixed type casting issues with modern GCC (for reals this time)
Yeah, my Motif fork needs some love to be able to build with modern compilers (GCC14-15). I am not sure which "fork" most distros (including FreeBSD/NetBSD/OpenBSD) are using.
