Nearly six years after mass protests erupted across Belarus following Alexander Lukashenko’s disputed election victory, the regime remains in power. Hundreds of thousands took to the streets, workers went on strike, and women formed human chains, but the uprising was crushed with the help of security forces and support from the Kremlin.   Yet Belarus’s democratic movement survived, largely in exile, and is preparing for what it sees as the regime’s next vulnerable moment. Sviatlana Tsikhanouskaya, the exiled opposition leader who challenged Lukashenko in 2020, compares the movement’s current struggle to Poland’s Solidarity movement, which operated underground before eventually helping bring down communist rule.   “Despite times of desperation, there were people who preserved hope, courage and strength,” Tsikhanouskaya told TVP World. “When the moment came, they didn’t lose that momentum. Our task now is the same.” Read the full analysis by TVP World's Stuart Dowell: https://lnkd.in/dD8dqKRZ

As the conflict in the Middle East between the U.S. and Iran continues, Turkey has joined the alliance of Saudi Arabia and Pakistan. The three Sunni countries have pledged to treat an attack on one as an attack on all three, a commitment not unlike that of NATO’s Article 5. “The fact that NATO members and other American allies are deciding to form this kind of alliances outside of NATO suggests that there are serious doubts about the reliability of American security guarantees,” said Marcin Zaborowski, TVP World’s Europe Editor. Each of the allies brings something to the table: Pakistan is a nuclear power, Saudi Arabia brings in considerable financial means, and Turkey, itself a NATO member, boasts a massive army, second only to the U.S. in NATO, along with a robust defense industry, known, among others, for the manufacture of Bayraktar drones. “It looks like all of these three nations decided that it is good to be on good terms with the United States, but it could not be relied upon (as) the only guarantee that we have out there,” TVP World’s Europe Editor said, adding that the alliance is not as much a challenge to the old alliance with the U.S. or, in Turkey’s case, a competition for NATO, but that it is “complementary.” “But a few years back, they wouldn’t have thought about it. They would think that our security rests on our engagement and involvement of the United States. Now, they think it's just not enough,” Zaborowski concludes. Join News in Depth’s host Ashim Kumar and his guest as they explore what led to the formation of the new alliance between the three Sunni states, including Trump’s “America First” policy, as well as how the Iran war exposed the gap in U.S. weapons production and America’s inability not only to supply itself, but also Ukraine, its allies in Europe and elsewhere. „50% of all the traffic on the internet is AI generated. [...] That shows you the scale of how far we are in when it comes to the so-called dead internet.” In the latest episode of You&AI, Aleksandra Przegalinska, Vice-Rector of Kozminski University and Fellow at Harvard University, warned that a significant share of AI-generated online activity fuels disinformation and propaganda. She noted that Russia has become particularly effective at leveraging scalable, low-cost bot networks to manipulate online conversations, amplify its narratives, and target content that challenges Kremlin messaging. One year into the presidency, Poland’s political balance looks very different. Polish President Karol Nawrocki has strengthened his position, while most major players have lost ground. He entered office promising strong resistance to the government. A year later, Donald Tusk remains in power, his coalition holds a majority and still leads in the polls, though its path to re-election remains unclear. The biggest setback is visible within Law and Justice, the party that backed Nawrocki. Poland’s right has fragmented and this works in Nawrocki’s favor. With no single force dominating, the presidency has become a central point for a divided but growing right. • Sviatlana Tsikhanouskaya, Belarusian democratic opposition leader and Chair of the United Transitional Cabinet of Belarus, joins Adam Jasser in On the Record for an exclusive interview to discuss the Belarusian people’s struggle for freedom six years after the disputed 2020 presidential election, Alexander Lukashenko’s growing dependence on Russia, and the country’s role in the war against Ukraine.   Tsikhanouskaya argues that Belarus is closer to freedom because its society and national identity have fundamentally changed, even as repression continues and hundreds of political prisoners remain behind bars. She explains why sanctions should not be lifted without concrete concessions to the Minsk regime, warns that Vladimir Putin could use Belarusian territory for further escalation against Ukraine or NATO’s eastern flank, and insists that the dismantling of Lukashenko’s dictatorship must be included in any future peace settlement.    “The freedom of Belarus is a matter of time,” she says, stressing that Ukraine’s victory would open the way for democratic change in her country.
