What is Max for Live?
Max for Live is the bridge between Ableton Live and Max, the visual programming environment from Cycling '74. It lets anyone build their own instruments, audio effects and MIDI tools and run them inside Live as ordinary devices, with knobs that can be automated, mapped to a controller and saved with a set. Ableton ships a handful of Max for Live devices with Live Suite, but the real depth is the community library: thousands of devices made by producers, sound designers and developers, many of them free. Each one is a single .amxd file you drag onto a track. max4.live indexes that whole library, more than 8,900 devices refreshed every hour from maxforlive.com, so you can search it in one place, filter it and compare devices before you download.
The five kinds of Max for Live device
Audio effects process sound on an audio track: delays, reverbs, granular processors, spectral tools, distortion and mixing utilities. Instruments receive MIDI and make sound, from wavetable and FM synths to samplers and physical models. MIDI effects sit before an instrument and change the notes passing through, such as arpeggiators, chord tools and modulators that map to any parameter in Live. MIDI generators write new notes into a clip, which is where euclidean rhythms, random melodies and generative sequencers live. MIDI transformations reshape notes already in a clip, for example by humanising timing, inverting a melody or stretching a phrase. Our device types guide covers each category in more depth.
Installing and choosing devices
You need Live Suite, or Live Standard with the Max for Live add-on. Download a device, then drag the .amxd file onto a track or into your User Library; there is no installer. Check the Live and Max versions listed on each device page, because older devices can need updates on Live 12. The installation guide walks through it step by step. Licenses vary: freeware, Creative Commons with attribution terms, and commercial devices sold by their authors. The license guide explains what each label lets you do.
