In sort of reverse order. You'll need to buy a device. The cheapest are the Heltec V4 (US$20). It will come with an antenna, good for the room, but that's about all. Then you buy an antenna (US$7). Heltecs come with an OLED and as much control as you can manage with one button. Therefore you'll need a UI device. The easiest is to use your Apple or Android phone for input and output, but not for any connectivity. Or you can use your PC. The more you spend on your LoRa device, the less you need the others. The best way to describe the functionality that Meshtastic provides is encrypted SMS service independent of the Internet and cell phone networks. To the extent there are other nodes around, they form an ad hoc mesh network. You can send and receive public messages to all on the mesh. You can send and receive private messages to indvidual nodes or pre-agreed groups anywhere on the mesh. Other nodes will forward messages, but won't be able to read them. Is that what you want? You have to decide. |

Hello @tideller -- (1) The Heltec V4 is a simple upgrade to the V3. It has more transmit power. It has an OLED display screen. It has two buttons, so navigating through its screens is a matter of pushing the PRG button once quickly, twice quickly, thrice quickly, or a long push. It's a clucnky way to navigate, so most people connect the radio to a phone or PC. You get a full screen with a familiar user interface (UI), including a mouse, keyboard, and the like. (2) OLED is a screen. A UI (user interface) is where a human interacts with the device. A simple UI is a push button that the user pushes to manipulate whatever is on the screen. A full UI is the screen on a phone, or a PC display, keyboard and mouse. (3) Yes, you can talk to people outside your radio mesh. They need to be Meshtastic users. You and they need to activate the MQTT function. MQTT requires the Internet, so you lose the advantage of Meshtastic, that it can operate entirely independently fo the cell network and the Internet. |

So the Heltecs (V3 and V4) are the transmitter right with small antenna
But I will more then likely need one on the roof of the house right?
Do the Heltecs come with an antenna port that I can plug an airial wire into it? so as to run up the side of the house and into an antenna?
What kind of port dose it use to connect to PC or phone?
So I take it that if they are not Meshtastic users then you cant communite with them right?
Thanks

Uh oh!
There was an error while loading. Please reload this page.
Greetings!
So i was at st Helans rail station last nigh and the gaurd was telling me about meshtastic and coretastic. So I come home and look it up
Though I am somewhat confused about the whole thing! Is it more like the old internet where you would dial up a server with a bulleting board or more like a ham radio where you would transmit audio only?
If its the first then I am more then interested then the second one
My current set up is as follows
Do I need to build an antenna aerial or buy one? Dipole or directional? and frequency please?
Thanks
