Dial It Up

Patrol a surreal version of the late-’90s internet.

It’s 1999, and you’ve been hired to clean up the information superhighway. In the wild detective adventure Hypnospace Outlaw, scour homepages packed with spinning GIFs and auto-playing MIDI tracks in search of copyright violations, cyberbullying, and malicious software. But watch out—as you dig deeper, you might uncover sinister corporate secrets lurking beneath all the Comic Sans type.

What we love: Tech nostalgia. With their embarrassingly earnest teen blogs and “under construction” banners, the game’s wonderfully clunky websites will elicit fond memories from anyone who spent time online a few decades ago.

When you’re not rooting out cybercrime, decorate your desktop with stickers—or even add a virtual pet.

Quick tip: Can’t find folks using the banned cryptocurrency CapaCash? Type “hint” in the search bar. For a small HypnoCoin fee, you’ll get a guide with three levels of hints (mild, mediumish, and extreme) for each case.

Meet the creator: Developer and musician Jay Tholen—aka Tendershoot—crafted Hypnospace Outlaw’s soundtrack of era-accurate MIDI tunes. He also designed and wrote much of the game, with help from cowriter Xalavier Nelson Jr. and programmers Mike Lasch and Corey Cochran.
