This is truly an amazing application that I can hardly believe is free. This really deserves to be a paid app. It will walk you through the grammar from JLPT N5 (basic) all the way up to N1 (advanced). The explanations are detailed and yet simple so anyone can follow along. The only prerequisite is that you can read English; this app will even teach you the kana (how to read the Japanese alphabet) if you're completely unfamiliar with the Japanese language. The quizzes after the explanations are both challenging and fun reminding me very much of Duolingo. Your knowledge will be put to the test while you'll be put at great risk of becoming an obsessive Japanese grammar addict like me. Finally, the app allows you to ask questions about the contents which... I'm just speechless about. The time, energy, and kindness put into this app is truly mind-blowing; it'll be obvious to anyone who's studying Japanese or has an interest in Japanese that this app was built only with the Japanese learner's best interest in mind. Did I mention the app is gorgeous and clean as well (swiping though the explanation cards is so satisfying) and it has finally been fixed to work with iOS 10 again! What are you waiting for? Ready to master Japanese?! 🙌🏼 The app's free, there's no sign in required, so you've really got nothing to lose! 🤗

**Edit: I’m now even MORE annoyed. Not only do they not give enough context or teach you many of the words you’re dealing with, the listening part doesn’t even give you an option to slow the audio down so instead you have to listen to the same audio like 50 times only to still get it wrong because you heard the wrong syllable. I’ve removed yet another star. If it drops to one star I’m deleting the app.**Not gonna lie it started out really great. HOWEVER, all they really focus on is grammar? Which is great and all but if you aren’t using another program to teach yourself the actually kanji and words you’re sorta out of luck. Not to mention the grammar gets really confusing because I’ll have to guess the context of some sentences they want me to solve because they don’t make it very clear or I’ll answer a question with は instead of が or の instead of を and they’ll tell me I’m wrong but when I try I figure out why with their little hint thing it literally doesn’t tell you why those forms were used in that context and tells you info relating to a part of the sentence you didn’t even have an issue with. I’d rate it higher if they fix these issues and tbh if this doesn’t improve I may actually rate this lower because as I’ve said it’s making me very mad cause I feel like I’m guessing my way through most the lessons which isn’t helping me learn much in the long run because I’m resorting to memorizing and praying to god rather than actually LEARNING the info.

Hi, Ryunoyoru! Thanks for being here. Yes, Bunpo is an app that focuses on grammar; the name Bunpo comes from the Japanese word for "grammar" (文法・ぶんぽう). Our lessons provide essential information about one Japanese grammar point at a time, in a streamlined manner. We offer this to encourage people to learn how Japanese sentences work and eventually build them with confidence. 🩶 Please note that, yes, in the quizzes, the context of a given sentence is de-emphasized. The focus is placed instead on using the target grammar correctly within the given sentence or sentence elements. Try to think grammatically! This can happen regardless of the context or "meaning" of the sentence. It is similar to solving a puzzle - but only after the pieces have been taken out of the box! Without knowing the context (i.e., the image of the completed puzzle), it is possible to use the clues from the bits of images on and physical shapes of the puzzle pieces (i.e. the surrounding grammar structures) to try and fit the pieces together correctly. 🩶 About the app itself: hints are also given in the vocabulary: tapping some words in the question will reveal their definition! And, the "Show Hints" button provides information only on the correct usage of the target grammar of the lesson, not grammar in general. (Use the "AI Tutor" for that!) 🩶 Finally, please know that there is no pressure to complete the quizzes perfectly the first time. Redoing the quiz to solve its unique puzzle is totally normal. There are no penalties for redoing lessons, and no restriction on how many times a lesson may be repeated. The process itself is a method for learning, so please don't feel pressure to move through everything once, get 100% correct, next next next in a linear fashion. If I’m being completely honest, I was very skeptical from all the good reviews this app was getting. I wasn’t sure if they were real reviews or if they were fake. But, now that I’ve used this app, I can tell that this is a very incredible Japanese learning program. I highly recommend it for beginners and people that already know how to speak Japanese. There are many features that go into helping you learn Japanese. You can tell that the developers took a lot of time and effort to make this app great. Another thing that I would like to point out is the fact that if you’re finished with a lesson, you can always go back to it and review the subjects that you aren’t sure about. Another thing I noticed was that Bunpo notifies you everyday (if you decided to enable notifications.) This motivates you to keep learning Japanese and it even reminds you to go into the app. One thing that I would suggest is for there to be lessons on learning how to write Hiragana and Katakana. There are many other apps that have these features, but it would make this app even greater if it had a lesson for beginners on how to write Hiragana and Katakana. There might be some lessons that teach me this that I haven’t personally got to yet. But, if this isn’t already on the app, it would be great to have it there. Overall, this app is great for beginners and people that are just looking to polish their skills. The features are great and the format is easy to use. The illustrations make it fun to learn. (In my opinion) it’s easier to learn Japanese on Bunpo than I found on Duolingo. If you’re looking to learn more languages and are interested in Japanese, I highly recommend this app.

I really love the exercises and the explanations. They feel well thought out and well explained. I find the little translations for words in some questions to be really useful too. I also love the review feature, it’s super useful and it’s nice that there’s a tip that pops up after review questions involving grammar.The organization of different grammar lessons is really nice as well. It’s easy to find something you need to go back and look at if you need to.I like that they included some Vocab lessons/exercises for essential or commonly used words. I hope they consider maybe adding more vocabulary lessons with more common/essential words.I’m really glad I bought the full version since the features are worth it and I think it’s really cool that you can purchase a lifetime subscription, especially for such a reasonable price.(the monthly prices are pretty good too) Compared to other language apps with subscriptions it’s really nice.I would highly recommend this app for any level of learners.
