Learning a language has never been more accessible – which is especially helpful if you struggle to find time to fit anything new into your daily routine.
We’ve picked some great apps below that can help you establish a consistent learning habit that’s flexible
in terms of how you like to learn, whether that’s with a tutor, as part of a community, in modules or via a gamified approach.
Learna
Personalise your virtual tutor and learn your language of choice via interactive chats with Learna. To begin, tell the app a bit about yourself and whether your goal is for professional or educational purposes. Head to the Home tab to see your learning plan, which consists of colourful modules containing lessons. The modules follow a route as you unlock each level based on subjects you’ve chosen during your onboarding.
Bonus tip: Enjoy real-time conversations with your tutor, receive feedback on your speaking and writing skills and try activities focusing on vocabulary, pronunciation and more.
HelloTalk
Unlike traditional language learning, HelloTalk offers community-based learning for 40+ languages via a social network where you can find motivation from others (in the onboarding, select your interests to connect with like-minded people). This app has it all, whether you want to attend live classes or select courses, or book a Pro Partner to practise 15 mins a day with. The interesting part is that while you’re practising, the app helps with translation correction in real time.
Bonus tip: Check out the social feed by tapping Moments. If you’re not up for a 1:1 conversation, create a post to engage with the wider audience.
Duolingo
The app that changed the language-learning world, Duolingo takes a gamified approach by setting daily streaks to create a continuous habit. It follows the path of vocabulary, grammar, listening, reading and speaking for 40+ languages, all with real-time feedback on your progress. By collecting gems, you’ll be set up in a leaderboard with the chance to compete with other learners.
Bonus tip: With Duolingo Max, you can have access to features such as AI conversation tools like Roleplay and Video Call.
Loora AI
For learning English only, Loora AI provides a fully AI tutor learning method. Rather than completing an onboarding it creates a free flow session to assess proficiency level. The idea is to practise speaking English out loud and get help on improving your pronunciation. Once you respond, the app transcribes what was said and explains if anything was incorrect and why, giving you the corrected version along with pronunciation guidance – or, if needed, a more natural way to say the sentence like a native speaker.
Bonus tip: You’ll get a new word every day that you have to use in your conversation. Tap the book icon during your practice sessions to see it and earn rewards if you’re able to work it into your chat.
