When I determined\u00a0there wasn&#8217;t a clear answer, Swarat encouraged me to turn my exploration to find one into a blog post.\u00a0The post on <a href=\"https:\/\/fd.xuwubk.eu.org:443\/http\/www.pl-enthusiast.net\/2014\/07\/21\/memory-safety\/\">memory safety<\/a> was followed up by posts on <a href=\"https:\/\/fd.xuwubk.eu.org:443\/http\/www.pl-enthusiast.net\/2014\/08\/05\/type-safety\/\">type safety<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/fd.xuwubk.eu.org:443\/http\/www.pl-enthusiast.net\/2014\/09\/08\/probabilistic-programming\/\">probabilistic programming<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/fd.xuwubk.eu.org:443\/http\/www.pl-enthusiast.net\/2015\/03\/03\/noninterference\/\">noninterference<\/a>, and <a href=\"https:\/\/fd.xuwubk.eu.org:443\/http\/www.pl-enthusiast.net\/2015\/04\/14\/dynamic-software-updating\/\">dynamic software updating<\/a>.<\/p>\n<h3>PL research and its connections to other areas<\/h3>\n<div id=\"attachment_757\" style=\"width: 165px\" class=\"wp-caption alignleft\"><a href=\"https:\/\/fd.xuwubk.eu.org:443\/http\/www.pl-enthusiast.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/12\/PLcryptoConnection.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-757\" class=\"wp-image-757\" src=\"https:\/\/fd.xuwubk.eu.org:443\/http\/www.pl-enthusiast.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/12\/PLcryptoConnection.jpg\" alt=\"Connecting PL methods and implementations to those in cryptography\" width=\"155\" height=\"213\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-757\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Connections between PL and Crypto<\/p><\/div>\n<p>A\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/fd.xuwubk.eu.org:443\/http\/www.pl-enthusiast.net\/about-the-pl-enthusiast\/\">goal of this blog<\/a> is to\u00a0highlight the\u00a0connections between PL research and other areas, while also\u00a0discussing core\u00a0theoretical and practical developments.\u00a0Several times we have looked at connections between PL and Cryptography, first looking at <a href=\"https:\/\/fd.xuwubk.eu.org:443\/http\/www.pl-enthusiast.net\/2014\/06\/06\/securing-computation\/\">securing computation<\/a>, and then looking at <a href=\"https:\/\/fd.xuwubk.eu.org:443\/http\/www.pl-enthusiast.net\/2014\/12\/17\/synergy-programming-languages-cryptography\/\">PL-Crypto synergies<\/a> more generally, particularly in the <a href=\"https:\/\/fd.xuwubk.eu.org:443\/http\/www.pl-enthusiast.net\/2014\/12\/23\/formal-reasoning-pl-crypto\/\">ways the two communities\u00a0perform formal reasoning<\/a>. We have also looked at <a href=\"https:\/\/fd.xuwubk.eu.org:443\/http\/www.pl-enthusiast.net\/2014\/09\/25\/algorithms-and-programming-languages\/\">bridging PL and algorithms research<\/a>. My most recent post has looked at <a href=\"https:\/\/fd.xuwubk.eu.org:443\/http\/www.pl-enthusiast.net\/2015\/05\/27\/what-is-pl-research-and-how-is-it-useful\/\">PL research generally<\/a>, showing how it is impacting many areas of computer science.<\/p>\n<h3>Views from\u00a0the field: PL in practice and in education<\/h3>\n<p>We have looked in several ways at how programming languages, and ideas underlying their design and use, are\u00a0penetrating industry and education.<\/p>\n<div style=\"width: 122px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/fd.xuwubk.eu.org:443\/http\/heartbleed.com\/heartbleed.png\" alt=\"Heartbleed bug logo\" width=\"112\" height=\"136\" \/><p class=\"wp-caption-text\">Heartbleed<\/p><\/div>\n<p>We looked at <a href=\"https:\/\/fd.xuwubk.eu.org:443\/http\/www.pl-enthusiast.net\/2014\/07\/09\/why-are-some-languages-adopted-and-others-arent\/\">research on programming language adoption<\/a> and the <a href=\"https:\/\/fd.xuwubk.eu.org:443\/http\/www.pl-enthusiast.net\/2014\/07\/10\/ieee-posts-its-top-list-of-languages\/\">IEEE&#8217;s top language list<\/a>. We have also looked closely at the <a href=\"https:\/\/fd.xuwubk.eu.org:443\/http\/www.pl-enthusiast.net\/2014\/07\/01\/how-did-heartbleed-remain-undiscovered-and-what-should-we-do-about-it\/\">Heartbleed SSL bug and how PL techniques might have been brought to bear to prevent it.<\/a><\/p>\n<p>On the education side, Swarat\u00a0surveyed whether\u00a0universities <a href=\"https:\/\/fd.xuwubk.eu.org:443\/http\/www.pl-enthusiast.net\/2014\/09\/02\/who-teaches-functional-programming\/\">teach functional programming<\/a>;\u00a0FP has historically been a font of ideas that have penetrated the mainstream. Swarat\u00a0also detailed his experience (in <a href=\"https:\/\/fd.xuwubk.eu.org:443\/http\/www.pl-enthusiast.net\/2014\/07\/17\/program-verification-in-the-undergraduate-cs-curriculum\/\">two<\/a> <a href=\"https:\/\/fd.xuwubk.eu.org:443\/http\/www.pl-enthusiast.net\/2014\/07\/04\/programming-language-research-for-k-16-education-part-ii\/\">parts<\/a>) introducing ideas about formal verification into the undergraduate curriculum, while taking a broader, <a href=\"https:\/\/fd.xuwubk.eu.org:443\/http\/www.pl-enthusiast.net\/2014\/06\/18\/programming-language-research-in-k-16-education\/\">two part look<\/a> at PL research&#8217;s <a href=\"https:\/\/fd.xuwubk.eu.org:443\/http\/www.pl-enthusiast.net\/2014\/07\/04\/programming-language-research-for-k-16-education-part-ii\/\">impact in K-16 education<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>As an activity at the intersection of education and practice, I <a href=\"https:\/\/fd.xuwubk.eu.org:443\/http\/www.pl-enthusiast.net\/2014\/06\/04\/build-it-break-it-fix-it-programming-contest\/\">introduced the Build-it, Break-it, Fix-it programming contest<\/a>, meant to study\u00a0at &#8220;what works&#8221; for\u00a0creating high-quality software while providing a stimulating educational experience. Our <a href=\"https:\/\/fd.xuwubk.eu.org:443\/http\/www.pl-enthusiast.net\/2014\/10\/08\/bibifi-contest\/\">first contest had some interesting outcomes<\/a>, and the next iteration is <a href=\"https:\/\/fd.xuwubk.eu.org:443\/https\/www.builditbreakit.org\/scoreboard\">currently underway<\/a>. There will be more to say about the results of this contest, in future posts.<\/p>\n<h3>Process of scientific research<\/h3>\n<p>Readers of the PL Enthusiast include scientists, and those interested in the process of science, especially as applied to work on programming languages. As such, we wrote posts about the process of <a href=\"https:\/\/fd.xuwubk.eu.org:443\/http\/www.pl-enthusiast.net\/2014\/08\/14\/peer-review-matters\/\">peer review<\/a>, and provided advice on <a href=\"https:\/\/fd.xuwubk.eu.org:443\/http\/www.pl-enthusiast.net\/2014\/08\/21\/advice-reviewing-papers\/\">writing peer reviews<\/a>\u00a0and\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/fd.xuwubk.eu.org:443\/http\/www.pl-enthusiast.net\/2014\/09\/17\/advice-writing-author-response\/\">author response<\/a>\u00a0(a relatively recent mechanism in CS peer review processes). Most recently, he developed an app for <a href=\"https:\/\/fd.xuwubk.eu.org:443\/http\/www.pl-enthusiast.net\/2015\/04\/30\/ranking-cs-departments-interactively\/\">ranking CS research productivity<\/a>. Previously, he looked at <a href=\"https:\/\/fd.xuwubk.eu.org:443\/http\/www.pl-enthusiast.net\/2014\/12\/02\/collaboration-in-pldi-oopsla\/\">author-based collaboration graphs for PLDI and OOPSLA<\/a>, and <a href=\"https:\/\/fd.xuwubk.eu.org:443\/http\/www.pl-enthusiast.net\/2014\/10\/21\/is-popl-one-community\/\">for POPL<\/a>.<\/p>\n<h3>Interviews<\/h3>\n<p>PL researchers are having\u00a0an impact in many ways. We asked them about their work, their job search, their plans, and for advice to those in a similar position. Our subjects were <a href=\"https:\/\/fd.xuwubk.eu.org:443\/http\/www.pl-enthusiast.net\/2014\/06\/26\/spotlight-emina-torlak\/\">Emina Torlak<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/fd.xuwubk.eu.org:443\/http\/www.pl-enthusiast.net\/2014\/07\/14\/spotlight-aws-albarghouthi\/\">Aws Albagouthi<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/fd.xuwubk.eu.org:443\/http\/www.pl-enthusiast.net\/2014\/07\/24\/spotlight-ravi-chugh\/\">Ravi Chugh<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/fd.xuwubk.eu.org:443\/http\/www.pl-enthusiast.net\/2014\/08\/11\/spotlight-cindy-rubio-gonzalez\/\">Cindy Rubio-Gonzalez<\/a>, and <a href=\"https:\/\/fd.xuwubk.eu.org:443\/http\/www.pl-enthusiast.net\/2014\/08\/25\/spotlight-bill-harris\/\">Bill Harris<\/a>. We discussed\u00a0how they got to where they are, what they have worked on and are working on, and their current perspective about PhDs and PL. We started with Facebook&#8217;s <a href=\"https:\/\/fd.xuwubk.eu.org:443\/http\/www.pl-enthusiast.net\/2015\/01\/22\/interview-avik-chaudhuri\/\">Avik Chaudhuri<\/a>, responsible for the <a href=\"https:\/\/fd.xuwubk.eu.org:443\/http\/flowtype.org\/\">Flow<\/a>\u00a0extension to Javascript, and\u00a0followed up with Google&#8217;s <a href=\"https:\/\/fd.xuwubk.eu.org:443\/http\/www.pl-enthusiast.net\/2015\/03\/25\/interview-with-gos-russ-cox-and-sameer-ajmani\/\">Russ Cox and Sameer Ajmani<\/a>, who are part\u00a0of of the <a href=\"https:\/\/fd.xuwubk.eu.org:443\/https\/golang.org\/\">Go<\/a> development team.\u00a0We have several more of these interviews in the works.<\/p>\n<h3>Remembrances and Reviews<\/h3>\n<p>Over the past year, two pillars of the field, Susan Horwitz and Radhia Cousot, passed away, and so we posted remembrances of them and their work. Swarat wrote <a href=\"https:\/\/fd.xuwubk.eu.org:443\/http\/www.pl-enthusiast.net\/2014\/06\/09\/radhia-cousot\/\">Radia&#8217;s remembrance<\/a>, and guest <a href=\"https:\/\/fd.xuwubk.eu.org:443\/http\/research.microsoft.com\/en-us\/people\/tball\/\">Tom Ball<\/a> <a href=\"https:\/\/fd.xuwubk.eu.org:443\/http\/www.pl-enthusiast.net\/2014\/08\/18\/remembering-professor-susan-b-horwitz\/\">wrote about Susan Horwitz<\/a>.\u00a0We also\u00a0wrote a\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/fd.xuwubk.eu.org:443\/http\/www.pl-enthusiast.net\/2015\/02\/25\/alan-turing-pioneer-information-age\/\">book review, on Copeland&#8217;s biography,\u00a0<em>Turing: Pioneer of the Information Age<\/em><\/a>, on account of the popular Alan Turing bio-pic, <a href=\"https:\/\/fd.xuwubk.eu.org:443\/http\/www.imdb.com\/title\/tt2084970\/\">The Imitation Game<\/a>.<\/p>\n<h2>Call for contributions<\/h2>\n<p>Our plan is\u00a0to continue to write\u00a0posts on our own\u00a0but we&#8217;d like your help.
