Leo Reich and Andrew Scott in "It Gets Worse"

Some news items you might have missed:

• Queerty: The new comedy It Gets Worse follows three “deeply non-aspirational twenty-somethings” who stumble through dead-end jobs and chaotic love lives after being evicted from their flat.  No money, no direction and absolutely no idea how to get their shit together. Surely it gets better than this, right?

The queer-centric series features the always fab Andrew Scott (above with Leo Reich). Coming to Paramount+ on November 6. Continue reading “New Comedy ‘It Gets Worse’ + Taiwan Pride Draws 150K + More”

Halloween Poem: ‘To The Ghosts Of Little Queer Boys’

Vintage photo of kids dressed for Halloween

As we head into tonight’s holiday shenanigans, I share this touching ode to childhood Halloweens — from Leo Herrera, one of my most favoritest writers and filmmakers.

By Leo Herrera: Happy Halloween to the ghosts of little boys who costumed as princesses and the parents who dressed them. To the ghosts of the many Drag Mothers born on this night and the “straight” guys who got to experiment. To the ghosts of Trans families who walked without fear on the one night it was legal to “crossdress.” To the clang of chains and clumsy heels on the sidewalk, to raising delicious hell and casting Queer spells on a night that was always ours.

From Leo’s terrific book of poems, Sentences.

Today, he is married and nominated for an Emmy Award for playing a man whose family embodies those possibilities.

• ACLU: Two Portland-area residents have filed an administrative complaint with the U.S. Department of Homeland Security (“DHS”) today describing how ICE agents tailed and boxed them in with vehicles and slashed their car’s tire after they observed and filmed agents in a parking lot. Patrick Stewart, the English actor who made an otherworldly transformation from British stage veteran to sci-fi icon bringing a Shakespearean aesthetic to the worlds of Star Trek and X-Men, has died at the age of 86.

Stewart died Wednesday at his home in Los Angeles following “a brief and poignant journey with Alzheimer’s disease and Lewy body dementia,” according to his longtime spokesperson Kelly Bush Novak.

Not only a great actor, Stewart was a progressive activist who supported LGBTQ rights, universal healthcare, destigmatizing mental health issues, and animal welfare, “particularly his cherished foster pitties.” Continue reading “Star Trek/X-Men Star Patrick Stewart Dies At 86”
