what's the answer?
This morning one of the teaching assistants said to me – child X says it hurts to sit down and she’s walking very slowly, she’s definitely in pain. She said her father hit her with his belt, am I allowed to look? And of course we’re not allowed to look especially below clothes (or ask direct questions). Yes I said make sure there are 2 of you. She returned within 5 minutes white faced and in tears. She has been flayed she said. Take her to the medical centre I said and of course we’re not allowed to do that either. We phoned social services who said they were really busy but they would add her to the case load. I’ll phone the police then I said, no they said we do that, so I phoned the police. The Doc at the med centre phoned the child protection unit but was told there was no-one available. I phoned the police again. I need a child protection officer otherwise I shall be bringing child X home I said and I don’t care how illegal it is. Like (slow) magic, a child protection police office and a social worker came and took child X to hospital. Child X is very lucky, despite her injuries, because at our school 2 of us have high ranking police at our beck and call. We can threaten to bring home waifs and strays and be extremely difficult if they don’t move mountains. And of course they did, bless them, but normally they wouldn’t even know about such a case. So what happens to the children who have to rely on the system eh? It stinks that’s what. Child X would have been sent home to her abusive parent until her case came to the top of the pile. In a week or two, maybe.

You did the right thing x10! To hell with the rules. I still live with the guilt of not doing something similar from 17 years ago! I was too young, stupid and naive to know what to do in a similar sort of case (neglect, not abuse).
well done you
the rest of it is shocking
well done you
now, pour yourself a stiff drink and toast the weekend. . .
(oh g*d- I've had one of those word vers again. . . not very funny considering the circumstances, but here it is anyhow: bunznpus)
oh and well done again
God, that is so scary how the 'normal' system fails people.
You are a good witch, Ziggi...
Bastard.
I am saddened to see that children are always so low on the priority list and that there are so many in need of help.
You are an angel and the powers that be can stick their politically correct rulebook up as far and as deep as their arm can reach!.
Every year I get more enamored with the idea of mass sterilization and screening applicants who apply for the antidote.
YOU RULE!
thank god for people like you, zig. i wish i'd had one just like you on my side when i was a kid.
i hope the bastard who hit her gets Jabba 'the Carthorse' Fitzpatrick as his cellie!
Perhaps you could develop your high-ranking network?
Well done for using "common sense" and "decency"
Who knows what the larger answer is about repairing this deeply ingrained, universal problem.
It seems the real answer is to circumvent all the stupid rules they put in the way of actually protecting the child.
You did a beautiful thing, Ziggi. And forgive me for not knowing something you might have posted previously about, but are you a school principal or guidance counsellor or what?
This is absolute hell! The poor child. I am glad you cared and did the right thing. I am glad you are very stubborn and persistent. Child abuse, actually any form of abuse (by a supposedly loved one) breaks my heart. I quit nursing when after so many years in the emergency room I witnessed one horror after another. The last straw was when a mother fried her 2-month old baby in a wok. The hell with all of those abusive people. May they rot in hell!
What they all said.
have a lovely weekend oh witchy one. . .
put on those pink All Stars and dance your troubles away, pet the horses, polish the saddles and do something gorgeous with a younger man to take your mind off it
rest easy, knowing you did the right thing
at the end of the day that was a good thing to have done
(not that you need me to tell you)
thank you
I didn't really do much and nothing more than anyone else would - but I'm lucky enough to have 'contacts' (Himself) - it frightens me what happens to the children that don't - it makes me extremely angry and upset - I have heard this morning that she's ok and the father has been removed.
We're off to Wales now to watch the cup final (yes I know it's at wembley) but we're going to a nice hotel for a minibreak (and to look at Welsh horses but I haven't told him that)
Have a good weekend people
your support is priceless

It's an awful thing to say but a lot of people wouldn't have done anything and would have simply hid behind the rules. You did the right thing, Ziggi.
You rock!
oh ziggi. in my work i have seen this also more than i would have ever thought possible. and once, long ago, like andrea, i did nothing. i will never forget that, and i will never turn away again. but it's also hard. i have a little 11 year old in my life whose parents cannot help him. he is with his aunt who is struggling. i cannot take him in but i wish i could.
you have revealed so much about yourself in this post. you've just entered favored status in my book.
:)
Thanks for what you did for that poor kid. It's okay for people to breed like g*damned rabbits yet we need a license to drive a car.
Ugh!
