Happy New Year Everyone! Wishing all a splendid year, filled with inspiration and happiness. Here is a little study that I did along the Brazos River near my studio. I plan on working up a larger version in the studio in the near future.

New Studio in Texas!

Recent studio renovation of my old Texas farmhouse!

In mid-Spring of 2016, once again I went to an area of North Central Texas that I've been visiting for over a decade. This time, the universe whispered in my ear that it was perhaps time to pick up and make a major change in my life. A friend pointed out an old abandoned farmhouse in Palo Pinto, TX, which I immediately felt was right up my alley, so I bought it on the spot. Though the house still has work to go, I'm so happy to have my new studio up and running, and what a great space it is. Looking forward to many miles of canvas in my new place.

And today's addition, a pair of, what I call huts. With a somewhat romantic notion in mind, I titled the piece "Fish Huts", imagining spending a weekend fishing, with a little get-away just steps beyond.

DAY 3: The Tiderunner

This old boat caught my eye the first time I was staying at Hunting Island State Park, near Beaufort, SC. It was only on my last trip, this past March, that I discovered that it was featured in the movie "The Prince of Tides", a 1991 movie starring Barbara Streisand... what do ya know! Anyway, each time I see it, it seems to be more and more fading into the marsh... one day, it will just disappear... but not in this little painting!

Painting Texas!

I've been on the road now since the end of March, Florida, Georgia and now here in Palo Pinto, TX for the past few weeks. This is my second painting trip here and it's even more inspiring than during my first trip. I've been busy and also have had a hard time connecting to the internet, so posts have been few and far between. I'm planning on heading to New Mexico in a couple of weeks, so I hope to keep things more up to date.

Turkey Creek has many places to paint, so the name will be recognized by many as I've been painting out there for years. This piece was done in August, and the hay fields were not too far from being ready to cut. Turn 180 degrees from this spot and there's another fantastic painting waiting for the brush!

Here's a little bigger painting to shake things up. The color red is not often come across here in Western NC, but on this day, there it was, a field of brilliant poppies. The poppies are what initially caught my eye and made me stop, but as I was setting up I became more and more focused on the old house and barn, and I loved the tractor under the shed, repeating the song of red sung by the poppies.

I've driven past this old farm on numerous occasions, heading back into
some of my favorite painting spots. One day, as I was driving past, I hit
my brakes and thought "that's it!" With a somewhat stormy late spring
sky, there was an opening of light that created the most dramatic effect,
field in partial shadow, spots of light and shade here and there. The
challenge was that it was like a kaleidoscope, everything was moving,
yet I had to keep that first impression fixed, and I loved painting it..

Dockside is from a trip to the coast where I found this 'ready for painting' subject, illuminated with the late afternoon sun which created the most striking reflections of the little sailboat. I love boats and hope to be painting lots more of them soon!

This painting, which I've always been fond of, is what I like to consider an arrangement in white. It was painted using these lovely pearls onions (they were big pearl onions really) along with a vase of wild Cherokee Roses that bloom in profusion on my property in the spring, filling the air everywhere with the most quintessential rose perfume. This painting was also exhibited in 20011 at the Bascom Museum in Highlands, NC during their American Exhibition where it received an honorable mention.

I was intrigued by this old tattered house for a number of years... one day, the light was just right and I quickly set up and painted as fast as I could. On a later outing, and not long after this piece, I was stunned and saddened to discover nothing but an empty field where this old soldier once stood.
