String Star Quilt

With an overflowing scrap bag last year, I decided to try a slightly different string quilt.

String Star baby quilt

After dividing my strings into light and dark piles, the diamond foundations were cut from newsprint. Then a lot of sewing. And pressing.

The outer background was created from isosceles triangles, again with a newsprint foundation, until an octagon was formed. Finally I sewed four right triangles for the corners to square it up and finished with a narrow border to stabilize all those strings.

The quilting started with a sand dollar design in the center and spiraled outward. It's simple as long as you remember to spiral counterclockwise and keep the fabric from stretching on the bias.

Thanks to Maureen for reminding us to post on this blog, too.

Vintage String Quilts

I took these photos at our local quilt show this past October, and I thought you might like to see them here.  I have more explanations and photos on my blog Indigo Threads.

Both of these quilts had older quilts inside as the "batting".  They are very heavy quilts.  I think these qualify as pretty much the ultimate in scrap quilting!

Little string star

I bought this string star mini quilt at a show this weekend to hang in my sewing space.
It measures 10.5 inches and it was made by the same quiltmaker
who made the solid string quilt-as-you-go quilt I posted below.
I like the pinwheel in the centre, and the blue background
which calms down the scrappiness of the strings.

I received string blocks this week from Finn and Jeane and Jeanneke.
I think I'm up to 45 or so.
Thanks so much!

String star quilted and bound

I finished my skinny string star last week
quilting it with feathers

and putting a surprise on the back.
This is a bright quilt for an alert baby,
and I'll be donating it to a local children's charity.

I'm enjoying all the great string quilts you're posting here
and I look forward to a few more
before we wrap up the string thing along in June.
What sort of string-y things are you up to?

Skinny strings and two quilts

Here's a tale of two string quilts, this one above
and one you can win here.

Back in January, Karen over at the Selvage Blog asked her readers
to sew together seven 1.25 inch strips to a final size of 6 by 55 inches
to make a group quilt.
That's my contribution above.

Except I was a bit slow off the mark, and Karen had already finished the quilt
before I sent her the strip.
So I auditioned some solids and came up with that bright green

and then made some half square triangles, 5 inches unfinished

which I sewed into a star, trying to match up the skinny strips in the inside blocks

auditioned some borders
and finally came up with the quilt you see at the top of the post.
Karen is generously giving away her World Quilt,
named because it has contributions from all over the globe.
I'm giving mine away too, once it is quilted.
It's destined for a yet- unknown baby.

I think I've finally decided....

I haven't posted anything here in quite a while I need a new string piecing project, but I've been having a terrible time deciding on one. So I've spent a little time in EQ7 today, and I think I have it. Now, the challenge here, is to get it done in the time allotted for this blog. June, I think it is. I'm not sure, at this point exactly what colour the backgrounds in the stars will be, except that I want the strong contrast to give the checker board effect. The individual blocks are 15 inches, since I didn't want to be working on too small a scale for the diamonds for the stars. It should be fun.
