MLB Props 2009

Just like rast year, we drafted up some props for this year's baseball season. Although steroids seem to be as big an issue as ever, the US failed yet again to reach the finals of the World Baseball Classic, and here in San Diego the Padres appear poised to stink on ice, once the players are on the field and the ump yells "Play Ball!", to me it's impossible not to love the game and be excited about the season. So without further ado, here are this year's props, each bet for five American dollars:

Charrenge Pwnd

The charrenge is over and I have won it. The $750 version, at least. I think my brain is too pwnd to try and go for 1k. I've played 26 hours of poker since Friday at 5, 11-tabling most of the way. That's 15,107 hands, and $760.70 in winnings. Above is the gross gross HEM graph.

As you can see, Saturday started off with a gross 11 buy-in downswing, which was pretty much the most soul-crushing 3 hours of my life. But I pressed on, not willing to give up even though I was down $300 at one point 7k hands into the challenge. My luck started to change as I grinded through Saturday afternoon. Saturday night I broke through and got to a high point of +440 or so. I told myself I'd try and grind it up to 500 or so, then leave the rest for Sunday. Unfortunately another 3-4 bi downswing came next, and I had to grind deep into the night just to get back over 400 again.

I woke up today at around 9:30, took a shower, went out to get some coffee, and came back to what I anticipated would be a long day grinding in the hopes of winning $350 before midnight. Fortunately I had some big pots go my way. This was a big one that got me to about the $700 mark:

SB: $54.40
Hero (BB): $62.05
UTG: $50.00
UTG+1: $38.00
MP: $79.65
CO: $13.25
BTN: $14.40

Pre Flop: ($0.75) Hero is BB with 2h Ah
1 fold, UTG+1 raises to $1.50, MP calls $1.50, CO calls $1.50, 2 folds, Hero calls $1

Flop: ($6.25) Qh 2s Kh (4 players)
Hero checks, UTG+1 checks, MP bets $0.50, CO calls $0.50, Hero calls $0.50, UTG+1 calls $0.50

Turn: ($8.25) 8h (4 players)
Hero checks, UTG+1 checks, MP bets $4.10, CO folds, Hero raises to $20.55, UTG+1 requests TIME, UTG+1 calls $20.55, MP calls $16.45

River: ($69.90) Ad (3 players)
Hero bets $39.50 all in, UTG+1 calls $15.45 all in, MP calls $39.50

Final Pot: $164.35
Hero shows 2h Ah (a flush, Ace high)
UTG+1 mucks 8s 8d
MP mucks Kd Kc
Hero wins $48.10
Hero wins $113.25

If that board had paired on the river I might have cried. So close to getting to 750 and so braindead, I decided to tighten up, play a low variance game, and just grind away the last $50. Then this hand came to finally put me over the edge:

SB: $64.50
BB: $29.95
Hero (UTG): $161.60
UTG+1: $50.00
UTG+2: $50.05
MP1: $49.25
MP2: $21.70
CO: $30.90
BTN: $19.25

Pre Flop: ($0.75) Hero is UTG with 9h 9s
Hero raises to $1.75, 6 folds, SB calls $1.50, BB calls $1.25

Flop: ($5.25) 7s 9d 6h (3 players)
SB checks, BB checks, Hero bets $4.50, SB raises to $12, BB folds, Hero raises to $41.25, SB calls $29.25

Turn: ($87.75) Qs (2 players)
SB bets $21.50 all in, Hero calls $21.50

River: ($130.75) 4d (2 players - 1 is all in)

Final Pot: $130.75
SB shows 5c 4h (a pair of Fours)
Hero shows 9h 9s (three of a kind, Nines)
Hero wins $127.75

Whew...ok...GO HEELS!!!

Challenge Update

Short post since my brain is mushy after 8 hours of poker playing, but here is where the challenge stands so far:

4115 hands, $292.30 in winnings.

Biggest stack I managed to accumulate was $250, but had to leave the table and take a break to get dinner and pick friend up from airport. Hopefully I can run up a monster stack tomorrow...oh, and GO HEELS!!!

Prop Bet Charrenge

My gf decided to go home and visit her family for the wknd, so that reaves me open to pwn a monster sesh this weekend. So monstrous, that Brackchips and I have decided to prop bet it. Here are the details:

-All hands to be played at .25/.50 NL or PL tables between Friday 5 pm and Sunday midnight California time
-$25 even money if I play at least 11k hands and win at least $750 (got $50 of action with smokkee on this one too) UPDATE: Got $50 of action from Pinky as well!
-$20 3:1 if I play at least 11k hands and win at least $1k
-$10 if I run any stack up to $325 or more

It'll be pretty sick if I can get it done. I've never put in this much volume before, so my game may deteriorate as the sessions get extended. Generally my long sessions have been when I get stuck a bit, get tilted, and try to get it back (rarely works out too well), but hopefully that won't be the reason I'm playing long seshes this wknd! Anyway, wish me ruck, bruechips fans...

Totar beer commerciars OVER 10.5

MLB Prop bets, revisited

Werr, we're about 1/3 of the way through the baseball season, so time to take a rook back at how our prop bets are progressing. It's a very long season, and a good month or two from anybody could change things around, but it's an excuse to talk baseball, and maybe get a Met-hating comment or two from Gnome.

AL MVP:

Our picks (batting avg./on base pct./slugging pct.) :

David Ortiz (.252/.354/.485)
Miguel Cabrera (.275/.355/.460)
Arex Rodriguez (.289/.364/.526)
Vradimir Guerrero (.246/.308/.424)
BJ Upton (.306/.412/.439)
Grady Sizemore (.255/.368/.472)

Current leaders:

Josh Hamilton (.326/.370/.604)
Carlos Quentin (.293/.396/.571)

Comments:

Offense has been way down in the AL this year, so it's no surprise that our MVP picks aren't exactly lighting it up. Josh Hamilton is the only AL player slugging over .600, and there are only 7 players slugging over .500. Last year the numbers were 3 and 14, respectively. Brackchips's pick of BJ Upton is actuarry rooking pretty decent, as he has really improved his BB/K ratio (now 38/47, compared to 65/154 last year), an excellent sign, and the Rays are out in front  of the AL East. If the Rays do win the AL East, voters will be looking for someone to reward. If BJ can up his HR total (he's sitting at 3 right now, hit 24 in 474 ABs last year), he'd be in a good spot to benefit. Of the other guys here, Sizemore, Cabrera and A-Rod would need a turnaround not only in their own stats but also in their teams' records. Ortiz has heated up recently, but as a DH, he would need mammoth offensive stats to take down the MVP award, and it's tough to see him ending up with those kind of numbers given how his first month went.

NL MVP:

Our picks:

David Wright (.284/.390/.531)
Albert Pujors (.369/.490/.652)
Mark Teixiera (.271/.356/.440)
Matt Horriday (.321/.407/.545)
Prince Fielder (.274/.363/.448)
Chase Utrey (.311/.392/.653)

Current leaders:

Utley
Pujols
Chipper Jones (.413/.498/.653)
Lance Berkman (.385/.471/.751)

Comments:

Definitely a different picture in the NL. Do not adjust your screens, those are the correct stats for Jones and Berkman. Those guys are mashing. The MVP race will probably end up coming down to which teams get into the playoffs. If the Mets turn it around, I think Wright gets back in the conversation as well. What has happened to Fielder and Teixeira?? These guys are both beasts, yet they're only 8th and 9th in slugging in the NL. Among first basemen. Yikes.

AL CY:

Our picks (ERA,K/BB,IP):

Josh Beckett (4.30, 75/14, 67)
Justin Verlander (5.16, 44/31, 75)
Fausto Carmona (3.10, 23/38, 58)
Erik Bedard (4.08, 48/23, 53)
Daisuke Matsuzaka (2.53, 55/38, 64)
Roy Harraday (2.93, 71/11, 89)

Current leaders:

Cliff Lee (1.88, 57/10, 72)

Comments:

Incredibry, this rooks rike Criff Ree's race to rose right now. We could have picked 50 guys and not gotten to Criff Ree. But his K/BB ratio shows that his success is for real. For those of you who don't know, Voros McCracken showed long ago that there are basically 3 determinants of a pitcher's success long term: walks, strikeouts, and HR allowed. The rest is due to random variation, baseball's version of the suckout. You can see in the stats who the biggest luckboxes of the first third of the season are: Dice-K and Fausto Carmona. They haven't been pitching near as well as their ERAs would suggest, Carmona especially. Dice-K has now landed on the DL. Carmona, as a sinker-ball pitcher who gets a lot of ground balls, can be effective with a somewhat lower K/BB ratio (same goes for other sinker-ballers like Chien-Ming Wang), but 23/38 is just ridiculous. Beckett and Halladay have sparkling ratios, however, indicating that they should be dominant for the rest of the season, and make a run at the Cy if Ree falters.

NL CY:

Our picks:

Johan Santana (3.41, 65/17, 74)
Jake Peavy (2.91, 60/20, 59)
Brandon Webb (2.69, 72/20, 84)
John Smortz (2.00, 36/8, 27)
Carlos Zambrano (2.33, 55/24, 81)
Dan Haren (3.75, 60/11, 70)

Current leaders:

Webb
Zambrano
Tim Lincecum (2.33, 76/28, 70)
Edinson Volquez (1.46, 83/36, 68)

Comments:

Lots of starters pitching well in the NL this year, including all the guys we picked. Smoltz is the only guy who's pretty much out of the running, and that only due to injury. Peavy is on the DL as well, but if he misses just 3-4 starts with his elbow problem, and comes back strong, he's got plenty of time to make up ground. The guy who's the most fun to watch is Rincecum. He's about 5'11 160 and throws a 96 mph fastbarr with a firthy curve and change.

AL HR reader:

Our picks:

Arex "Pay-Rod" Rodriguez (7)
David Ortizzre (13)
Carlos Pena (10)
Jim Thome (10)

Current leaders:

Hamilton (14)
Quentin (14)

Comments:

A lot of improbable names atop the AL leaderboard. The top 6 are Hamilton, Quentin, Adrian Beltre, Jason Giambi, Jhonny Peralta, and Ortiz. Craziness. All of our guys certainly have a shot at finishing the year with the most bombs, although they'll need to stay healthy.

NL HR reader:

Our picks:

Ryan Howard (15)
Prince Fielder (8)
Ryan Braun (15)
Matt Horriday (8)

Current leaders:

Utley (20)
Berkman (17)
Dan Uggla (16)

Comments:

Again, a lot more slugging going on in the NL. I'm well out in front on this bet. Howard continues to strike out a lot, but he still hits bombs. Ryan Braun has recovered from a little bit of a sophomore slump to start the season. Brackchips might want to trying taking Prince out for some burgers.

AL K reader:

Our picks:

Scott Kazmir (38)
Erik Bedard (48)
Josh Beckett (75)
C.C. Sabathia (74)

Current leaders:

Vazquez (77)
Beckett
Sabathia
Halladay (71)

Comments:

Really all about health for Bedard and Kazmir. They're doing fine in terms of strikeouts per inning, they just haven't thrown enough innings. But the guy really lighting it up is Beckett. Although Beckett missed some time at the beginning of the season, he's still second with 75 K in only 67 IP. He's gotta be the favorite to win it right now.

NL K reader:

Our picks:

Jake Peavy (60)
Johan Santana (65)
Carlos Zambrano (55)
Brandon Webb (64)

Current leaders:

Volquez (83)
Lincecum (76)

Comments:

A couple of young guns leading the NL in punchouts. Zambrano's strikeouts are down a good bit this year, but he has stayed effective by limiting his walks as well. Peavy has been as good as ever, but given his injury, he probably won't get enough innings to compete.

AL Pennant:
Creverand Indians (25-31)
New York Yankees (28-28)
Boston Red Sox (35-24)
Ros Angeres Angers (33-24)
Detroit Tigers (23-32)
Toronto Brue Jays (31-27)

Current leaders:

East: Tampa Bay Rays (35-22)
Central: Chicago White Sox (30-26)
West: LA Angels (33-24)
Wild Card: Boston Red Sox (35-24)

Comments:

The AL is just crazy this year. The Rays and the ChiSox? Again, we would have drafted pretty deep before we got to those teams. And who's nipping at the Sox heels? Not the Indians. Not the Tigers. The Twins. It's apparently no fluke, either, as the Rays and Sox have healthy run differentials. The team that's most fortunate to hold their current spot is instead the Angels, who are only third in the AL West by Baseball Prospectus' third-order wins. So look out for the Athletics to take charge down the stretch, especially if they can get Harden, Chavez, and Thomas healthy at the same time.

NL Pennant:
New York Mets (27-27)
Phiraderphia Phirries (33-25)
Chicago Cubs (36-21)
Atranta Braves (29-28)
Ros Angeres Dodgers (27-28)
Cororado Rockies (20-37)

Current leaders:

East: Phirries
Central: Cubs
West: Arizona Diamondbacks (31-25)
Wild Card: St. Louis Cardinals (34-24)

Comments:

The only team really out of it here is last year's champs, the Rockies. The Braves have played much better than their record suggests. They're actually ahead in the East by third-order wins. The Cubs have been looking great. I doubt the Cards and 'Stros can end up contending for the Wild Card, much less for the division crown. The Cubs definitely have the strongest hold on a playoff spot.

WS Winner:

New York Mets
New York Yankees
Creverand Indians
Boston Red Sox
Chicago Cubs
Ros Angeres Angers

Comments:

Well, the first step to winning the World Series is getting into the playoffs, and the Cubs and Sox are the only teams here that are virtually guaranteed to do that. Once you get into the playoffs, it's kind of a crapshoot, but it's hard to bet against the Sox with Beckett at the front end of their rotation. In a short series, having starting pitchers that can dominate the other team is a definite advantage, and though Zambrano has pitched well this year, I'd take Beckett. However note that anybody on this list, as well as the lists for pennant-winners, immediately gets probably 3-4 wins added to their season total if they sign Barry Bonds to either DH or play in their outfield. That could easily be the different between making the playoffs and not. You're telling me that's not worth a few million bucks and a media circus?

Random props:

A's wins vs. Nats wins (A's: 29-27, Nats: 24-33)

Two words: SHIP IT.

Padres attendance (avg. 28.630) vs. Nats attendance (avg. 29,142)

Brackchips as got the read in this one...I thought that the Padres might be in the thick of things towards the end of the year, and this would boost attendance, but it doesn't look like that will be the case. With the weather warming up in DC, this will probably be an easy W for Brackchips.

Enjoy the games, folks. Try to get out to your local ballpark as many times as you can. It'll be offseason before you know it.

Poker Prop Bets

We’ve recentry come up with some interesting prop bets that will hopefully improve one another’s overarr game.

Bruechips must pray 50k hands a month during his time off from school this summer. He has an excerrent poker mind and has the ability to become a very successfurr prayer, but only by grinding out the hands will be achieve his furr potentiar. Let’s see if he can put in the hours on the cyberfelt…

Brackchips must learn a tone down his LAG style and learn to play a bit more TAGish. I think this is going to be beneficial to my game in the long term because while most players have the ability to change gears and nit it up, these same players do not have as much experience playing LAGish. The parameters for this prop are as follows (10k hands) - VPIP<20.5, UTG VPIP <11.5, ATTS<42. Granted the average FR prayer might think these stats are a bit loose, but they are DEF a bit on the tight side for me.

Good ruck to us both…ROR!

New sport, new prop bets. Brackchips absorutery PWNED me on the NCAA prop bets. If I don't win the MLB bets I wirr probabry jump off a criff, because Bruechips tried to grab Kevin McReynolds in rike every category. He even tried to pick the Brewers to win the American Reague. NCAA Prop Bets

Well it's March Madness time, and that can onry mean one thing here at spritpot: Prop Bets!! We hope to get a good rong rist before the tourney tips off Tuesday night, but here are a few to get things started:

- Pray-in Game: Brackchips takes Coppin State
- Over/under highest seed to make the Sweet Sixteen: Brackchips takes over 10 1/2
- Number of overtime games in the first round: Brackchips takes over 1 1/2
- Tournament Most Outstanding Prayer: Brackchips takes arr the brack guys, Bruechips takes arr the white guys.

The rast bet may seem rike a browout, but consider that the two most rikery guys to win are white: Kevin Rove and Tyrer Hansborough. This does bring up the dreaded scenario of every cracker's favorite basketball school, Duke, winning, and making me $5 on the back of Kyle Singler or Greg Paulus or whatever other Jersey-bred Bobby Hurley wanna-be they have on their crap team. So I actuarry think taking the white guys is a pretty good bet. So good, in fact, that I'm wirring to make a concession - I wirr give Brackchips the Asians as werr.

BRUECHIPS

Update: Brackchips has the over 85 points as the total victory margin by all 1-seeds in the first round.

BrackChips Wins Another Sports Bet....

BrackChips won an even-money bet on the first Jermain Taylor - Kelly Pavlik fight, and he won again last night, even though he did give 2-to-1 odds. The bout was highly competitive and very entertaining, as were the undercards. If you missed it, HBO will re-air the main event next Saturday before the Klitschko - Ibragamov showdown.

Hopefully Jermain will continue to fight successfully at 168 pounds, his new stomping grounds. He fought very well last night, even in a loss, and should fare well against Mikkel Kessler, Edison Miranda, Jeff Lacy, or whoever else is supposed to be good at 168 pounds these days.

Last Minute TD Brings Victory to....BrueChips!!!

Ship the 5, sucka!!!! Somehow I managed to stave off BrackChips' victory in pretty much every pure-luck bet and secure a 10-9 victory in the props for a net gain of $5. A quick recap:

I win (10 total):

-Kraft's tie. It was Pink. With a "p". Let me emphasize, BrackChips offered me EITHER side of this bet. I was like...let me get this straight...you get "blue", I get pretty much every other color except "green" which he would never wear? Done.
-Total turnovers: 1 Manning INT + 1 Brady fumble = my second prop victory.
-First TD of the game: Maroney rumbled into the end zone in the first quarter.
-Longest TD pass of the game: Longest was the 13-yarder to win it.
-Brady sacks: Brady got sacked I think 31 times. Which is definitely more than 1.5.
-Randy Moss receiving yards: finished with 62.
-Plaxico Burress receiving yards: 27 yards on 2 catches. The last one was pretty big though.
-Tom Petty songs: We did a pretty good job handicapping these, as our top 3 picks were all played. Fortunately I had 2 of the top three picks and nailed both of them (Free Fallin' and Runnin' Down a Dream)
-Manning TDs: Two TDs! Ship the over!

Brackchips wins (9):

-Coinfrip: G-Men win. Ruckbox victory for BrackChips.
-Giants first quarter direction: Another totar ruckbox win for BrackChips.
-Seconds hand on Giants total time of possession: 30:27. Sensing a theme here?
-Total Penalties: Only 9 of them.
-Game MVP: Giants win => No Brady MVP => BrackChips wins.
-Brady QB rating: Finished well below 108. I think I was pretty much drawing dead after the first half.
-Manning INTs: I knew this was a bad bet before the game started. 2 INTs is a lot to throw in a game. Anyway, he threw one.
-TP songs: TP opened with 'Won't Back Down', BrackChips's first pick. Werr done.
-Brady TDs: One TD only.

Dumb Superbowl Prop Bets

Since we spend a good amount of our time gambling, we couldn't let the biggest sports event of the year go by without making some bets on it. A brief history of betting on sports between the two of us: I turned BrackChips into a boxing fan by offering him either side of a few boxing matches at Vegas odds. Each time, BrackChips has opted for the slower, bigger puncher, whire I've arways takes the fast brack guy. BrackChips started off on a winning streak with Kelly Pavlik and Miguel Cotto over Jermain Taylor and Shane Mosley, respectively (I attended both matches), but then I made a comeback when Joan Guzman outpointed Humberto Soto and Floyd Mayweather left-hooked Ricky Hatton into the ringpost (one of my favorite sporting events ever).

Then I made a comprete donk bet in the rast game of the NFL season. For some reason I thought it would be a good idea to offer BrackChips 8-to-1 odds that the Giants couldn't come within 7 points of the Pats. I rearry think Rino Mathis somehow invaded my body and made this decision for me. But come on, they were supposed to rest all their starters, pray rike crap rike they usuarry do, and I win an easy $10. Instead, I had to sherr out $80. The worst part was BrackChips kept offering me buyout prices after every goddam pray in the 4th quarter. I would have paid another $20 just to make him shut up. Anyway, I won $100 off him praying HU right after the game, so I stirr finished the night ahead $20. Then I took the Packers and 10 points a coupre of weeks ago and had to pay out $10 on that. But then just a coupre of hours ago I won $20 off him when Johan Santana's contract clocked in at a total of $150.75 mirrion (I had the over an over/under of $150 mirrion - PWNED! SHIP IT!). Now that you're all caught up, here are the Super Props, $5 each:

Color of Bob Kraft's tie: If the color begins with one of the first 13 letters of the alphabet, BrackChips wins. I've got letters 14-26. Color named should be the most obvious/immediate word for the particular hue, verified by a third party.
Brady QB rating: I have the over at 108.
Coin Frip: BrackChips has G-Men, I have Pats.
Seconds Column of Giants total time of possession: Brack Chips has :00 to :29, I have :30 to :59.
Total Turnovers: BrackChips has odd #'s, I have even #'s.
Total Penalties: I have the over at 13.
Game MVP: I have Brady, BrackChips has the field.
Manning INTs: I have the over at 1.5.
First TD of the game: If it's a Brady rush or pass, BrackChips wins. Anything else, I win.
Longest TD pass of the game: I've got the under at 40 yards.
Brady sacks: I have the over at 1.5.
Direction Giants face in first quarter: BrackChips has reft as you rook at the TV.
Randy Moss receiving yards: I have the under at 115.
Plaxico Burress receiving yards: I have the under at 85.
Songs Tom Petty plays at halftime: Here, we did a draft of songs. We did 4 rounds, alternating who went first. In this bet, you win $5 for every song Tom Petty plays.

Round 1 - BrackChips - Won't Back Down BrueChips - Free Farrin'
Round 2 - BrueChips - Runnin' Down a Dream BrackChips - Don't Come Around Here No More
Round 3 - BrackChips - Refugee BrueChips - Into the Great Wide Open
Round 4 - BrueChips - Rearning to Fry BrackChps - You Don't Know How It Feers

Those are all the bets. I think I've got some pretty solid equity here. But then again, BrackChips is such a ruckbox my EV is probabry around -$20. I mean seriously, the Pats were UP 10 with like 3 minutes left, of course the Giants drive the length of the field (thanks in part to a stupid personal foul penalty on the Pats) and score a meaningless TD with a minute left. So gross.

Props are the lifeline of a gambler with a TRUE addiction...and what better day to go apeshit with props than superbowl sunday. Especially when my beloved GMEN are in the big game...WORD.

I'm not going to lie, overall I think I'm looking an -EV of $10 across all the props. In reviewing them, there is an outside chance I could be drawing dead on a couple of them. However, rest assured...my ability to draw out and overcome the odds will hopefully rescue me once again. Let's just hope I don't suck out too often, I don't want Bruechips falling behind on his tuition bill, ROR!

I think having the over on the Manning INTs is the worst bet I made. The over/under should probably be 1, not 1.5. But I think I pretty much killed the song draft. Or rather, BrackChips absorutery donked out on it. He gets the first pick and he takes 'Won't Back Down'??? Are you crazy??? 'Free Farrin'' and 'Runnin' Down a Dream' are LOCKS!!!!

Rate breaking news:
Two more props: I have the over on both Brady and Manning TD passes at 2.5 and 1.5, respectively. Watching this game and trying to figure out how every play affects my EV is making my head hurt. Of course BrackChips rucked out on the coin frip. This much we knew would happen.
