Angie Nixon Scores Upset Win in Florida Senate Primary

August 18, 2026 at 8:25 pm EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

“State Representative Angie Nixon of Jacksonville, a progressive firebrand who ran a long-shot underdog campaign, won the Democratic nomination for Senate in Florida, the latest left-wing victory against establishment Democrats,” the New York Times reports.

“Ms. Nixon defeated Alex Vindman, a former national security official who was a top witness in President Trump’s first impeachment trial. His entry was largely welcomed by Democratic Party leaders hoping to make Florida at least competitive this fall. He far out-raised Ms. Nixon and had been seen as the clear front-runner in the race.”

Trump Pushes for Kim Jong Un Meeting This Year

August 18, 2026 at 7:26 pm EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

“President Trump is pushing aides for a meeting as soon as this fall with North Korean leader Kim Jong Un, U.S. officials said, seeking to revive a dramatic diplomatic quest from his first term to convince Kim to abandon his country’s nuclear weapons program,” the Wall Street Journal reports.

Threatening Friends and Courting Enemies

August 18, 2026 at 7:13 pm EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

New York Times: “Once again, President Trump is threatening his country’s own partners with everything from tariffs to bombs. Once again, he is fawning over a nuclear-armed tyrant deemed to be one of the biggest dangers to U.S. security. And once again, the world is left trying to make sense of a United States that has upended the world order that it established eight decades ago.”

“Nearly 10 years after Mr. Trump first came to the White House on the slogan of America First, his attack-thy-friends, befriend-thy-enemies approach to international relations has become the feature, not the bug, of U.S. foreign policy. Traditional alliances from Europe to Asia to the Middle East have frayed while the president courts those once seen as its adversaries.”

“Even so, the past few days have thrown the Trumpian worldview into stark relief.”

August 18, 2026 at 6:46 pm EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

“The federal investigation related to the dueling Republican Senate candidates in Alaska with the same name has entered a new phase,” NBC News reports.

“A grand jury last week issued subpoenas to compel information from witnesses linked to the campaign of Dan J. Sullivan.”

“The former schoolteacher who recently registered as a Republican is under investigation for potentially being part of a conspiracy to confuse voters and steal votes away from the incumbent, Dan S. Sullivan, who has been in office since 2015.”

Workers Start Latest Repairs to Reflecting Pool Liner

August 18, 2026 at 6:27 pm EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

“Work to correct the cracking and flaking liner at the Lincoln Memorial Reflecting Pool is underway, weeks after the government dropped charges against people accused of vandalizing the pool, citing instead the ‘botched’ renovation efforts,” the Washington Post reports.

Trump’s Ballroom Is Rising at Breakneck Speed

August 18, 2026 at 6:10 pm EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

“With the fate of his ballroom tied up in court, President Trump is racing against the clock,” the New York Times reports.

“He has enlisted a team of 250 workers to push ahead with construction 20 hours a day, seven days a week to complete as much work as quickly as possible. This week, there are plans to install one million pounds of rebar and pour 3,000 cubic yards of concrete for a project that is now two-thirds complete, the administration said in a court filing.”

“Now, with the matter pending before the Supreme Court, the Trump administration is making a practical appeal to the justices: The ballroom is simply too far along to be stopped now.”

Trump Weighs How to Achieve Iran’s ‘Economic Isolation’

August 18, 2026 at 6:09 pm EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

“The Trump administration is still eyeing additional economic measures against Iran after Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent indicated announcements would come this week,” Semafor reports.

Said one official: “There are many levers the president can crank harder in the weeks and months ahead. While he has been consistent in saying he prefers a diplomatic solution, he continues to retain all options if Iran continues to engage in terrorism and refuses to make a deal.”

Whistleblower Says Ivy Probes Lacked Evidence

August 18, 2026 at 4:36 pm EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

“The Trump administration task force charged with investigating antisemitism on Ivy League campuses pressured universities into punitive settlements despite turning up little to no evidence of systemic abuse, according to a whistleblower complaint made public Tuesday,” the Washington Post reports.

“The complaint — filed by Haley Van Erem, a former career attorney in the Justice Department’s civil rights division who said she was involuntarily detailed to work on the probes last year — alleged that the outcomes of investigations into schools like Harvard, Brown and Columbia were ‘predetermined without regard to the evidence’ in a ‘politically mandated effort’ to suspend their government funding and grab headlines.”

CBS News: Former DOJ lawyer alleges government improperly targeted Ivy League schools.

Trump Repeatedly Contradicts His Advisers On the War

August 18, 2026 at 4:28 pm EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

“President Donald Trump has appeared to publicly contradict some of his top advisers on at least three aspects of the war in Iran in recent days, as the conflict continues to impact world oil markets with no clear end in sight,” NBC News reports.

“While the administration has delivered mixed messaging on the conflict almost since the operation began in late February, the president over the past week has made repeated statements that seem to disagree with his own vice president, secretary of state and son-in-law over the goals and current state of the war.”

Jon Ossoff Goes After Trump Again

August 18, 2026 at 3:36 pm EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

“Sen. Jon Ossoff stood next to Arizona Sen. Mark Kelly on Tuesday and delivered the kind of anti-Trump broadside that has become a campaign signature, marking the latest round in an escalating feud with the White House,” CNN reports.

Said Ossoff: “I don’t think anything illustrates the times more aptly than that the draft-dodging, crook president, who has plunged our nation recklessly into a war he knows not how to end or to win, tried to imprison this man, who embodies American heroism.”

“For months, Ossoff has followed a consistent pattern: hold one large campaign rally each month, tear into President Donald Trump and his GOP opponent with easily digestible soundbites, and let those barbs ricochet around the internet.”

Sexual Misconduct Scandals Pile Up in Midterms

August 18, 2026 at 3:35 pm EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

“A pileup of sexual misconduct cases in front of the House Ethics Committee is casting more uncertainty over several races in the run-up to the midterms, giving a potential boost to Democrats despite scandals in both parties,” the Wall Street Journal reports.

“Reps. Cory Mills (R-FL) and Max Miller (R-OH) are both under investigation by the secretive committee as they seek re-election, and Rep. Chuck Edwards (R-NC) ended his bid after a probe was announced. The panel is also investigating Rep. Jimmy Gomez (D-CA), though his seat is set to stay in his party’s column even if he loses.”

“The mounting probes could strain Republicans’ effort to hold on to the House, where they currently have a 219-212 majority, with four vacancies.”

Trump Moves to Open National Forest Acres to Logging

August 18, 2026 at 3:32 pm EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

“The U.S. Forest Service is aiming to open more than 44 million acres of national-forest land to logging and road construction, a reversal of a policy that protected wildlife habitats for decades,” the Wall Street Journal reports.

“The agency intends to rescind a 2001 rule that blocked most development and timber harvesting in certain national forests, Agriculture Secretary Brooke Rollins said Tuesday. The new proposal would give local forest managers authority to develop the land, she said.”
