Walm Lane Christmas Dinner

On 23 Dec, our housemate Zheyi cooked everyone a scrumptious Christmas dinner. Special cutlery and crackers were bought to liven up the occasion. This menu was pasted on the fridge and had me salivating days before the dinner:

Christmas Veggie Spectacular

Starters
Cream of Spinach Soup
Almond and Apricot Couscous

~~~~~
Main Courses
Mushroom and Olive Tatins
Spiced Rice and Mushroom en croute
Mushroom stroganoff
Eggplant Gratin
~~~~~

Dessert
Banoffee Pie

Layout of the dinner table:

Cream of Spinach Soup

Not many are fans of spinach, I'm not a great fan myself. But this one tastes really creamy and smooth. It was cooked with carrots and spinach, then mashed into a paste with a hand blender. The greenish sight belies the sweet and tangy taste. And it works well as a starter.

Almond and Apricot Couscous

I've never been keen on couscous, but the chef changed my mind. With spices and a special spicy tomato sauce to go with, it became one of my favourites for the night.

~~~~~
Main Courses
Mushroom and Olive Tatins
The portobello mushrooms were first grilled with olive oil, spices and pine nuts, then placed underneath the dough and baked once again. After the dough turns golden brown, the shrooms are flipped over and topped up with rockets. The taste is wonderfully layered--tender and succulent for the shrooms, nuts are crunchy, and the pastry--crispy! Needless to say, it's a knockout.
Spiced Rice and Mushroom en croute
Another one of my favourites. The rice is actually basmati, and fried with fresh mushrooms and spices. This in itself already makes a tasty main dish, but when it's wrapped in a roasted crispy crust with sesame seeds on it, you end up craving for a whole plate of it.
Mushroom stroganoff
Mushrooms extravaganza! An assortment of fresh exotic mushrooms, including some bought from a market in Barcelona, lightly stir-fried with cream and butter... need I say more?
Eggplant Gratin
Too bad I didn't take a picture of the inside. This is a baked dish with deep fried eggplants covered with thick tomato puree and fresh basil leaves. Eggplant, aubergine or brinjal--they all refer to the same thing. The British call it the "aubergine" which actually sounds more posh. The top layer is made of ricotta cheese, gruyere cheese, parmesan cheese and milk. It's de-lovely.
~~~~~
Dessert
Banoffee Pie

"Banoffee" is actually made of joining two words, "banana" and "toffee" together. It's actually a contemporary English dessert, claimed to be invented by Ian Dowding and Nigel Mackenzie of The Hungry Monk restaurant in East Sussex in 1972. I contributed to this dessert by whisking the cream and grating the dark chocolate. Other ingredients include  ripe bananas, and boiled condensed milk spread on a base made of crumbled digestives and butter. Shamelessly sinful but who cares when it made eight people very happy?

After dinner we sat by the Christmas tree and streamed jazzy carols to end the night.

Legacy of the "Democratic Centralist Model"

I came across something interesting while doing research. One of my favourite academics, Chris Berry, a scholar in Chinese films drew inspiration from the book, "The Chinese Reassessment of Socialism" by Yan Shun and said this in the introduction chapter in one of his books:

"This book assumes that a variety of different opinions and ideas exist in China, including ideas that differ from those of the government and the Party. However, such difference is only conceivable there as counter-revolutionary practice that must be externalised and expunged, inhibiting any academic work from addressing such a possibility directly and explictly. This can be explained as the legacy of the democratic centralist model, whereby democracy is combined with the dictatorship of the proletariat by designating the Communist Party as the representatives of the proletariat exercising leadership after consulting the representatives of the masses. In other words, the Party apparatus is expected to listen, but once its decisions are announced, everyone is expected to follow". (emphasis mine)

Rings a bell, doesn't it? :-)

Journey from Russell Square to Vernon Square

The SOAS main campus is located at Russell Square. But there's another campus over at Vernon Square. Sometimes, I need to walk from Russell Sq. to Vernon Sq. for classes. It's a 20 minutes' walk but a rather pleasant one, especially when the weather is balmy. I'd usually walk past Coram Fields and the Brunswick Square Gardens.

Here's the narrow pathway before the park.

And this is Brunswick Square Gardens. I almost ended up late for classes last week because I lingered there for pictures. And you'll know why I couldn't resist myself.

The autumn in London can be quite gloomy sometimes. The sunny, blue skies you see here are really very rare.

On theory

Some humanities and arts students tend to think of theory as some kind of fixed mathematical formula. But this is often not the case. One should observe how theory is used in different social, historical and political contexts, and how scholars use it to the benefit of their research. Rather then being bound by theory like a slave, one should question it, problematise it and transcend it. All the better when your results refute the theory held by many, for that may very well be your personal contribution to academia.

Scones

Channel4 newscaster's chauvinism

A sex worker who became famous by blogging about her experiences under the name of "Belle de Jour", revealed that she was actually a middle-class woman who funded her PhD by becoming a prostitute. Her real identity was Dr Brooke Magnanti, a specialist in a hospital research group in Bristol. She led a double life by securing book deals and a TV spin-off under the identity of "Belle de Jour".

However, she felt "lucky to be able to reveal her identity by choice (she says on her blog she decided to do it because she could no longer face living a double life, but a fear of being outed by an ex-boyfriend apparently also influenced the decision".

Channel 4 newscaster, Jon Snow, interviewed Zoe Margolis, the author of the sex diary blog Girl With a One-track Mind, and sex worker cum International Union of Sex Workers (IUSW) spokesperson, Catherine Stephen, to talk about women who had similar experiences of living a double-life.

(Click on the following screen shot for the video)

(In the background, you can see the picture of Dr Brooke Magnanti)

Now, it was really interesting how the host Jon Snow exposed his own preconceptions (misconceptions?) and stereotypes. First, he showed his lack of background knowledge by asking Zoe Margolis if it surprised her that there are PhD students in the profession in "such high proportions". Margolis replied that it isn't and it's an "under-reported story". Then he went on to ask if Margolis' blog actually attracted male readers to go for paid sex. Margolis rebuked him by saying that actually most of her readers were females and found an "outlet" which they could relate to. She also added that many men are also in the business, except that it goes unnoticed. To me, why this goes another unnoticed as compared to female prostitution says something about the hypocrisy of society--that women are under greater moral scrutiny than men.

And Snow went on to ask Catherine Stephen another presumptuous question. I think Stephens answered brilliantly:

Snow: "But we are having a discussion in the very clinical confines of a studio, you are nice middle-class women and the rest of it, it isn't so for all, is it? Let's face it, this is a exploitative, dirty, vicious business for many."

Stephens' reply: "Can we first stress the fact that you are making two assumptions about me. One is that you're making the assumption that I am middle-class, which I would contest. The second assumption you are making about me that I am nice, which I would not." Then she went on to discuss the work of IUSW which campaigns for the rights and safety of female sex workers whom have been exploited. Why Channel4 chose only to introduce her as a "sex worker" and excluded her IUSW's worker title (see picture below) is another interesting thing altogether.

Snow's questions are fraught with stereotypical assumptions he has of gender, class, sexuality and profession. First, he already has the belief that men make up the readers of Margolis' blog, which is not true. Then he reveals his discrimination of sex workers by saying that Margolis and Stephens are "nice, middle-class women", implying that their "middle-class" backgrounds have given them some form of values and protection from the "sordidness" and "viciousness" of the world's oldest career, leaving them unscathed and clean. This sure says something about his moral expectations of women.

Very condescending indeed. Jon Snow should be thankful that Catherine Stephens and Zoe Margolis were gracious enough not to scoff him outrightly for his gratuitousness and chauvinism.

For my NYJC students

I know some of you did well for your promotional exams and some of you did not. One of you sought my opinion on whether to retain or not in JC1. I thought my response to this NYJCian might also help you and your peers. More importantly, I hope it also serves as some kind of encouragement.

1) Self-awareness for Long-term Improvement
Seek advice from tutors to know what went wrong. Hard work does not always necessarily translate into good results. You have to find out for yourself if you had the right focus, in terms of study skills, answering techniques, time management and exam skills. This awareness is essential for you to improve over the long run. A lot of JC students fail to realise that the skills required for JC are very different from that of secondary school. They end up feeling dejected and demoralised once they are unable to attain the same good results in JC with the same old skills they have been using in secondary school. But it doesn't work that way. It is important to ask yourself if you have been doing the right thing, using effective skills and techniques. Sometimes it not always about studying hard, it is about studying smart.

2) Promotion to JC2--pros and cons
Consider the pros and cons of retaining and promotion. Ask other seniors or peers who have gone through the same struggle to understand which is better. There are people who do better after being retained and there are also people who still continue to badly after retaining. Nevertheless, there are also people who do well after promotion. And it's important that you spend time talking to your tutors, because most of them will know your strengths and weaknesses. Hence, they might be in a better position to offer you sound advice.

3) Determination and Self-motivation
Many people are easily daunted by failures but it's not the end of everything. Failures are inevitable in life. And they happen for a good reason. Always allow yourself to learn from a mistake. Milk it for what it's worth. If you don't do well this time, it doesn't mean you fail in everything else. It could mean that your success requires more effort and takes a longer time to happen.

4) Integrity
Once you have made a decision on whether to retain or not (including your initial decision to pursue education in JC), it is important to you stick with it and see it through sustained effort and conviction. There are countless people who would give anything to be in your shoes. Education is not a given. Cherish the opportunity to learn, for once you start your adult working life, you will realise how much you miss being a student!

(左起:Chris Huhne the Liberal Democrats’ home affairs spokesman, Baroness Warsi the Tory spokesman on community cohesion, Jack Straw the Justice Secretary, David Dimbledy, the BBC Question Time host, Nick Griffin, British National Party Leader and Bonnie Greer, a black American playwright)

The Greenery of London

You might have heard of the song by George Gershwin, "A Foggy Day"

A foggy day,
In London town,

It had me low,

And it had me down

It's one of my jazz favourites. And I especially love the renditions by Ella and Billie. But it's also one of the songs that have created a stereotype of London.

Gray, misty and depressing.

And it will only get worse in winter. Some say that a handful Londoners will be so depressed by the weather that they contemplate suicide.

Not quite true actually. I was consoled find that they had large pockets of lush greenery even in the bustling downtown area. When it's balmy,people love to leisurely munch their sandwiches on the grass. I had the lovely opportunity of doing so a few days ago at Coram's Fields, a park near SOAS.

With this greenery and warmth, you'd actually think it's still summer.

By the time you read this, most of the leaves would have yellowed and withered. Autumn is engulfing the city. Here at SOAS, trees are rapidly shedding their leaves in anticipation of winter.

I was worried that I might not to see the autumn sights in Cambridge. So I went there last Saturday! More on that soon.
