Greetings Lizzbians!

I am returning to the Twin Cities  for two big shows, Saturday, December 28th and New Years Eve, December 31st and I am extra excited to be making my first appearance at Cedar Cultural Center for my annual round up of the winners and losers (OK, mostly the losers) of 2013!

This years show, “Lizz 2013: The Windbags Beneath My Wings” is a multi media roller coaster that covers everything from Bachmann to Cruz and Syria to Shutdowns.

If it happened this year and it made you scratch your head, I am gonna have something to say about it.

I am  also looking at you Paula Deen and Michael Douglas!

I am really excited to be at Cedar Cultural this year as we needed to expand a bit while keeping the intimacy and you know I gotta keep it it an

independent room!

Smear Campaign follows me on the first 6 shows of my “Planned Parenthood: I’m Here For You” comedy tour.

As of this post, I have done 38 shows with 5 on the books and counting.

I am very honored to be part of this project and to introduce you to the realities women face, and to some of the women who have amazing stories to tell about this great American Institution.

But mostly I am so proud of my friend, director and producer Matt Gorman, who on his own dime and his own time, came from Canada and shot, directed and produced this film because he wanted to help ensure that American women retain the dignity of affordable, quality healthcare.  And then, if that wasn’t awesome enough, he donates the film to www.aisfor.org. as a way to raise money for them.

It’s a media Lizzsplosion!

Oklahoma City Memorial

Tuesday I left Brooklyn for Norman Oklahoma, to speak to a class at OU on the impact of humor on the news.

Yesterday I visited the memorial of the Oklahoma City bombing.

It is a beautiful tribute.

Two soaring gates stand are separated by a reflecting pool. At the top of each is engraved 9:01 and 9:03. The bomb went off at 9:02. The times symbolize the moment OKC was changed forever.

There is a wall entirely crafted of hand painted tiles made by children from all over the world. Each tile is a message of hope, love and encouragement for those who had been victims of the attack.

The memorial has 168 chairs, one for each victim of the bombing. The children’s chairs are smaller.

I had forgotten that there was a daycare center on the ground level of the Alfred P. Murrah Federal building, and that of the 168 victims, 19 were children under the age of six.

I was overwhelmed with the loss the memorial represented. At first I thought about the people whose lives were lost exactly where I was standing. Then, as I looked at chair after chair, tile after tile, it felt a memorial to the times we are living in. It became so much more than Oklahoma City, it felt like a tribute to Boston, New York, DC, Birmingham, Atlanta, Newtown, Iraq, and on and sadly on.

It doesn’t matter to me whether it’s a trucks full of explosives, backpacks, pressure cookers, Bushmasters, IEDS, air planes, drones, I don’t care what you call them, they are all weapons and have all been used to blow innocent people to bits.

And as a walked down the lawn, each chair no longer symbolized a single person, it symbolized a thousand people, probably 10,000. Actually, probably100, 000.

Fuck it, I don’t feel like doing math.

All I know is that it felt like a stark reminder of the consequences of hate.

The violence of our times is starting to feel relentless. If we aren’t experiencing a horrific massacre or bombing or droning, it seems we are commemorating the anniversary of one.

I feel pretty heavy hearted.

I left NYC the day Boston was attacked, and flew to Oklahoma City.

And yesterday I stood on the very spot it had been attacked.

Two days before the 18^th Anniversary of their attack.

Three days before the Oklahoma City Marathon.

There are just too many anniversaries of attacks and bombings and shootings.

One day, I would like to celebrate anniversaries of peace.

Run in a marathon for Peace.

Visit a Peace memorial.

There are not enough anniversaries of peace.

I have a few milestones this year. May 7th, my book, Lizz Free Or Die will be released in paperback with new content. Plus, and this is really insane, I am celebrating my 30th year in the comedy biz. WTF. I decided to celebrate by bringing to Minneapolis, two of the people who have been instrumental in my life and career to have a funny and frank conversation about the journey. Frank and Brian have so many amazing stories about the early days of the Minneapolis comedy scene, to the creation of The Daily Show and Air America Radio.  We will be sharing stories from Lizz free Or Die, and then going off the rails, telling stories you have never heard! And if that isn’t fun enough, my family will also be joining to discuss the outrageous stories that distinguish being a Winstead from other carbon based life forms. It is unlike any show I have done in The Twin Cities before and is one that will be unforgetable! I hope to see you.
