Tis the season! Shutterfly has some fantastic photo cards for the holiday season. I've used Shutterfly in the past for a variety of photo needs and gifts. The calendars are a fantastic way to remind your family of the fun memories you had last year. And, they make great gifts!
I have also used the Christmas invitations when throwing parties, or even a simple cookie exchange. There is something special about getting an invitation in the mail versus an e-vite, right?
How adorable are these photo ornaments? The perfect gift for family members.
My personal favorite card would have to be the new flat stationary cards. How cute would that be with a black and white photo of Fi?
My favorite thing about the photo holiday cards is that you can completely customize your seasonal greeting-make it funny, sentimental, or traditional. And with the wide selection and fantastic prices at Shutterfly, it's a no-brainer.

My motto for the next month.

33 days until the wedding.
29 days until we leave for the Outer Banks
20 days of work (YESSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSS!)
I think these posters are too cute. They were originally designed in 1939 in Britain to be used as a propaganda poster if the Nazis succeeded in invading Britain. They didn't, so the posters were only printed in a very limited number. I need this printed on a coffee mug for my office. ;)

Seriously?
The following exchange happened as I rode the elevator up to my 12th floor office:
Me: Wow, it's already so sticky outside. So humid!
Woman: Yes, it's humid. And, I feel so awful anyway-what with this horrible flu I have.
Me: Oh? Are you suffering from allergies or something? I hear they are bad this year.
Woman: Oh no. The flu. Vomitting, night sweats, fever. I've been miserable for two days now.
Then I commence holding my breath until she gets off on the 5th floor and until I reach the 12th floor. This was no small feat as the elevator stopped 2 more times. Thanks Mom and Dad for putting me on the swim team at such a young age! I have you to thank for my breath-holding skills.
SERIOUSLY. If you have the flu, here's an idea-don't come to work!

Antiquated tradition...?
Goodness. It's been a while since I've updated the old blog. I've been busy! And the Big Day is definitely on the brain. Less than 40 days know (I think) until the wedding. I'm definitely excited to get married...but, I cannot wait for a vacation! I am counting down the minutes to June 15 when we pack up the car and drive to the beach. And since Steve will be driving the entire way, I am counting down the minutes until I can sleep in the car and read books while Steve deals with vacation traffic. :)
I am still in a quandary about changing my name, though I am leaning towards the switch. I was greatly persuaded after a Judge repeatedly called me "Attorney Brassier" in court. Nothing spells humiliating like being called a woman's undergarment in front of other lawyers! We'll see.
My newest debate concerns who will walk me down the aisle. Tradition says it's the father of the bride so that he may "give away" his daughter. I suppose we like to forget the fact that fathers once used daughters essentially as currency to pay off debts or buy their way into a higher social status. In fact, one of the originations of the bridal veil was so that the groom wouldn't know who he was stuck with until it was time to kiss the bride! (No veil here!) Moreover, the symbolism of being "given away" kind of makes me nauseous.
Don't get me wrong-I adore my Dad. We are alike in a lot of ways-we look alike, we love nerdy historical fiction, and we both know everything! But, my parents have always been equal partners-both work, both "parented" me, both cook, etc. So why wouldn't I want both with me when I walk down the aisle (that is a fantastic sandy beach) to make my own lifetime commitment? Plus, it's a symbol of the joining of two families, and the start of a new family-the one I've chosen. I think having just my Dad walk me down the aisle overshadows the role and involvement my mother has had in my life.
I know having both parents walk the bride down the aisle is a Jewish tradition. To me, it just makes sense. There's certainly nothing wrong with tradition, but I don't know that I must mindlessly follow it just because it's a wedding tradition.
Am I crazy?

The Name Game
First of all, did you notice the puppy of the day is a cairn terrier? I think that is a sign today will be a good day.
It must be puppy season. A couple of my friends have either just gotten or will be very soon getting new puppies. So exciting! And isn't it fun to pick out a name for that little furball?
When I knew little Fi was coming my way, I poured over name ideas. I liked Contessa and Lady. I liked Abby and Katy (just kidding! hehe). I looked up where the cairn terrier originated - in the "cairns" (rock formations) of Ireland and Scottland, so I began reseraching Celtic names. I came across Fiona and loved it. It meant "white, fair" or "vine." Translate that to white wine. Kidding!
And so she was named Fiona. Over her 5 years she's been called many other things though. I love how nicknames evolve. From memory, she's been called:
Fi
Fi Fi
Farona (sung to the tune of My Sharona)
Fioni (compliments of my nephew)
Furby
Furbaby
Rat dog (when she is bad)
Ratty
Bean
Little bean
Bear
Scruffy McScrufferton (when she's due for a grooming)
and on, and on.

hmm
I haven't written anything on this blog in well over a week. It's a testament to how fast everything seems to be moving right now. I can't believe it will be May next weekend. What?? I feel like I was just digging my car out of snow. Oh wait. I have a garage. Nevermind.
Moving on. There are so many exciting things coming up in the months ahead. I suppose that's why the time moves so quickly-but I can't wait. But, with all the upcoming events and happenings, I tend to get a little anxious. Scratch that-a lot anxious. Will everything come together? What am I going to wear to ____? What if ___ happens? What's the backup plan? And of course, while all of that anxiety is going on, work inevitably becomes explosive and stressful.
I need to be better at dealing with stress. Running definitely helps, but I wish so much I could just let some things "slide." Some people are so good at taking a "what will be will be" approach. Instead, I take more of a "things will turn out a certain way depending on how much I control them and make them fit in this fantastic schedule I've come up with..." Bleh. When I get stressed like that I end up snapping at people and basically approach every little problem like it's an end of the world type catastrophe.
What's helped, though, is that I have such generous friends (and family-hi katy!). This week a few friends came over and helped me out with what might seem like an easy, mundane task-tying up silverware for the wedding and finishing up some DIY decorations. Simple-yes, but a huge help. They got it done in 2 hours. I would have dragged the project out for weeks.
Weddings can definitely be stressful, with the planning and trying to please people, but Steve and I are really lucky to have such fantastic friends and family to help us out with all different aspects of the wedding. And I think that will make it that much more fun. :-)
Being at the beach won't hurt either.
