Here's what he just gave me for my birthday:

The Alton Brown fans among my dear readers (I think it's just you and me, Kerri) will recognize this as AB's signature saltcellar (or sodium chloride containment unit).
But wait! It isn't just your plain old, average, run-of-the-mill saltcellar. Oh no, my friends. Observe:
Autographed by the man himself!! I'm not sure I'll even be able to bring myself to use it for fear of sullying that signature caricature. And in the box, under the saltcellar, I found this:
Be still, my heart. Alton Brown wished me a wonderful birthday. Me. Alton Brown. Wonderful. I don't think there's any point in having birthdays henceforth, because they're not going to get any better than this.
Sometimes I'm not sure whether I have a bigger crush on Airan or Alton. (It's Airan, trust me.) I'm not entirely sure how Airan managed this (he claims he was in Atlanta on "business" last week...), but I'm not asking too many questions. I'm just too excited! Quick, send me recipes that use kosher salt!

That's the coolest! What a great gift. I use kosher salt pretty much all the time now. Any time a recipe calls for salt, I use kosher. Sometimes you can use a little less of the kosher, because I think it's a little stronger. And tastier!
Missy that is totally cool. I hope a little of we got you for your birthday will work with your containment unit. I know I got you at least one thing AB recommends.
Happy birthday and happy cooking.
Bon apatite.

Makes my gift look like crap.. but congratulations on having a cool husband.
My hubby is so very practical when it comes to gifts. If I want something extravagant, I need to have pictures, websites and hints dropped for months.
One Christmas I got a bread machine from my bro and an espresso maker from my parents.. I cried when I opened them. Ruggy felt like a schmuck because I didn't cry when he gave me a mondo cutting board. Since then, the gifts have gotten much better. In fact, he replaced the espresso machine this year for my birthday.
To everyone who keeps saying to me, "You're not going to use it, are you?" I say this: Yes! Of course I'm going to use it! What's the point in having it if I'm not going to use it? I want to see that autograph every time I use salt.
OMG. That's all I can say: OMG!!!!
To the Young Master.

Kelly--thanks for the comment. Do you freelance edit for a magazine? Do you write for them also? You mentioned writing for fun (or is that here on your blog?) I'm always curious about the lives of other writers/editors and how they make it work!
Hey, Lauren--
In my experience, getting freelance work is all about who you know. I do freelance editing for the company that employed me full-time before I became a full-time mom, and my other freelance clients are all people I used to work with or friends/acquaintances who know I'm an editor and who need my services now and then. Almost every project I work on is text for a web site. Most of the writing I do is all right here on the blog -- I used to do more creative writing, but I don't really have the time these days. Maybe someday...
