So, I'm very curious what use case line [20] is trying to solve.
I pass nonsense character values as a right argument. And nl_z_ just spits it 
back at me.  It is *as if* nl_z_ is reporting that they were defined.

Another anomaly... with this code...  Hmmmm.

Is there anyone out there who could take a gander at this?  Perhaps shed some 
enlightenment?

I'm beginning to think that it's complicating the code.  More complexity with 
absolutely no purpose (i.e., dead code).
