It's equivalent to (e.&>~/ ;) :

   e. 2 3 4;3 4 5;1 2
1 1 1 1 1 0 0 1
0 1 1 1 1 1 0 0
1 0 0 0 0 0 1 1
   (e.&>~/ ;) 2 3 4;3 4 5;1 2
1 1 1 1 1 0 0 1
0 1 1 1 1 1 0 0
1 0 0 0 0 0 1 1

So, it tells you which boxes (vertical axis) contain each element of the
raze (horizontal axis).
