i would suggest ascii camel case,
eg greaterthan. becomes greaterPeriod
Then it is very close to
English orthography, but in words
so there are no URL conflicts
The distinction of multi-letters
is built into the camel casing.

i suggest period rather than dot
as colon can be 2dots or dotdot
both of which are confusing
but period and colon are English,
which most become acclimated to.
