I have confirmed that I can save a plot to bmp format without either `media/image3` or `media/platimg` installed. It works for me both on Windows and Linux.

Can you try the following commands, and check whether the file `~temp/plot.bmp` exists?

   load 'plot'
   pd 'reset'
   pd i.3 4
   pd 'show'
   pd 'save bmp'
