This meme is hosted by Billy at Ramblings of a Coffee Addict!

This week's question is: If you could retell a Halloween story or trope from a fresh angle, what would you choose and why?

MY ANSWER: I guess maybe a haunted house story? Don't ask me how I would do it or what it would be about. I've got no clue! Lol. Even though I am a huge chicken and cannot do the haunted houses at Halloween where people jump out and scare the bejeezus out of you, I do like the historical haunted houses...the ones that have actual ghost stories to them. So I would probably want to do something around a haunted house story. I dabbled with them as a preteen but they always lost momentum somewhere because I couldn't figure out the ending, like why I had these ghosts sticking around and causing chaos. So needless to say, I had a few "ghosty" ideas rattling around in my head, but just could never get them to go somewhere.

Books from the Backlog #209

2026-10-29T00:00:00.000-05:00

Books from the Backlog is a fun way to feature some of those neglected books sitting on your bookshelf unread. If you are anything like me, you might be surprised by some of the unread books hiding in your stacks. This is a fun meme hosted by Carole's Random Life in Books!

When the Bat's away, the Cat will play. It's time to see how many lives this cat really has. . . .

Two years after escaping Gotham City's slums, Selina Kyle returns as the mysterious and wealthy Holly Vanderhees. She quickly discovers that with Batman off on a vital mission, Batwing is left to hold back the tide of notorious criminals. Gotham City is ripe for the taking.

Meanwhile, Luke Fox wants to prove he has what it takes to help people in his role as Batwing. He targets a new thief on the prowl who seems cleverer than most. She has teamed up with Poison Ivy and Harley Quinn, and together they are wreaking havoc. This Catwoman may be Batwing's undoing.

I added Catwoman: Soulstealer to my TBR pile in August of 2018, so when it came out! This was the DC Icons series where an array of NY Times Bestselling authors wrote about one of the DC heroes but in a teen's perspective. I remember I read Wonder Woman...because it was Leigh Bardugo and Marie Lu's Batman because it was Marie Lu and Batman! So naturally, I HAD to read Catwoman! But alas, it remains unread...still. I'm hoping since it's early Maas it won't be so hefty. Plus it was DC comics so she had to follow a set of rules and such, as I remember Marie and Leigh mentioning this when they were on tour for said books. I always loooooooved the Tim Burton Batman films, so Batman Returns was a HUGE win for me! So I definitely still want to read this one, just need to work it in somehow!

Can't Wait Wednesday #272

2026-10-28T00:00:00.000-05:00

Can't-Wait Wednesday is a weekly meme hosted at Wishful Endings, to spotlight and discuss the books we're excited about that we have yet to read. It's based on Waiting on Wednesday, hosted by the fabulous Jill at Breaking the Spine.

Love, magic, gods, and monsters collide in the thrilling conclusion to the Soul of Shadow trilogy!

When Charlie Hudson awakens after her Trial, it’s to find that nothing will ever be the same. The king of the gods is plotting to destroy Asgard. Charlie and her brother are trapped a world away from the people they love most. And worst of all, she’s become the very thing she hates a night mare.

Charlie’s transition is anything but smooth. Stuck in Helheim Palace, she must train her new shadow magic alongside dozens of soulless mares who would gladly turn her over to the enemy if they discovered she’s Loki’s true heir.

Her only hope is Elias Everhart, her once-sworn enemy who has somehow become one of her closest allies. He’s promised to help train her mare abilities—an easy idea in theory, if her magic weren’t malfunctioning… and if being near Elias didn’t make the darkness within Charlie grow bigger and more all consuming by the day. Charlie is in a race against time to reconcile the powers warring within her. Because if the threat on Asgard isn’t enough to kill her… love certainly will be.

In Dreams of Ruin, the only thing worse than becoming a night mare, is loving one.

I still need to start this series but I like the vibes it gives off! So I'm adding this one to the list! Lol.

A teen investigates the history of disappearances on her island home and uncovers a dark, magical secret in this swoony romantasy from the New York Times bestselling author of the Hush, Hush saga, Becca Fitzpatrick.

A teen beauty queen has vanished from idyllic Tea Kettle Island, and all evidence points to the girl's ex-boyfriend, Sascha Sinner. When a local vigilante group posts a hefty reward for his capture, seventeen-year-old Bunny decides to go after it-and him-hoping the prize money will help her save her grandmother's failing farm.

Sascha, however, insists he didn't do it. And he wants Bunny to help him prove his innocence. Bunny's less sure, but when yet another disappearance reveals a hidden history of missing girls-a history that includes her own mother-she has to admit something is at play.

Her search for the truth takes her to the very edges of town, into its darkly magical past, and dredges up secrets the other townsfolk would rather not surface. All the while, there are devilish creatures stalking the woods, devilishly handsome young men with more than their fair share of darkness, and the very devil to pay if Bunny can't figure out what, exactly, is taking the girls of Tea Kettle Island...

I am SOOOOOO excited Becca has a new book coming out this year! I LOVED The Hush, Hush series and I LOVED her two standalone thrillers she wrote after that! So I am TOTALLY NEEDING this book in my life!

Top Ten Tuesday #701

2026-10-27T00:00:00.000-05:00

Top Ten Tuesday was created by The Broke and The Bookish in June of 2010 and was moved to That Artsy Reader Girl in January of 2018. It was born of a love of lists, a love of books, and a desire to bring bookish friends together.

This week's topic is: HALLOWEEN FREEBIE: Top Ten Books That Gave Me Chills

*in no particular order

10. TEN by Gretchen McNeil--naturally I placed it here, because how can I resist? Lol. This was a really good thriller though from my hazy memory. I totally remembered calling the whodunit or part of it anyway! Lol.
9. SURVIVE THE NIGHT by Danielle Vega--this was a really freaky one that was a little unhinged, but I loved it anyway!
8. THE DEVOURING LIGHT by Kat Ellis--speaking of unhinged! I remember this one was pretty weird too but when you had seriously spooky to the weird it works!

7. DIARY OF A HAUNTING by M. Verano--I mean if the cover isn't spooky enough for you...
6. THERE'S SOMEONE INSIDE YOUR HOUSE by Stephanie Perkins--loved this one! Another twisted thriller. I can't remember my thoughts on the movie, I think I liked it...I don't remember hating it. But there was also likely a huge gap between my reading it and seeing it!
5. SWERVE by Vicki Pettersson--you'll forever fear roadside rest stops...never stop there!

4. RULES FOR VANISHING by Kate Alice Marshall--been so long since I've read this one but I remember it being CREEPY! Creepy good, but also creepy!!!
3. THE DEAD HOUSE by Dawn Kurtagich--I love a book that does mixed media woven into the story! This was another super creepy one!
2. NEAR THE BONE by Christina Henry--this is one that will chill you on the fictional horror and realistic horror as well! SO good!

1. DOOMED by Tracy Deebs--and speaking of realistic horror...this is one that will forever terrify me of happening, but I think AI might be trumping this fear. So this particular fear is in a very close second place now.

ARC Review--East of Envy by Nikki St. Crowe

2026-10-26T09:00:00.001-05:00

Booktok sensation and USA Today bestselling author Nikki St. Crowe continues the dark and spicy reimagining of the Oz saga!

Betrayed by the Wizard of Oz, Dorothy Gale is now forced to team up with the heartless mercenary, the Tin Woodman. Tin has a grudge of his own against the Wizard – not only is he the man who stole Tin’s heart, but now he’s taken Tin’s little brother, Gabriel, for his own ends.

But defeating the Wizard won’t be easy – he has all of Oz under his spell and more power than anyone. Or does he?

Because Dorothy is more than she seems, and Tin can't help but be drawn to her. And the longer Dorothy’s in Oz, the more she uncovers about her murky past, and her own potential magic.

And when all is said and done, Dorothy might have to reckon with an earth-shattering maybe Kansas isn’t home after all.

I received this ARC from the publisher in exchange for an honest and voluntary review. I was in no way compensated for this review.

I was ecstatic to receive an ARC of Nikki St. Crowe's East of Envy almost immediately after I finished reading West of Wicked! This book picks up right where we left off in the chaos of the first book and it was smooth transition to get back into the thick of things.

Dorothy's world has been upended, again. The man she thought she was falling hard for, turned out to be nothing but a liar and a deceiver and he just stabbed her, leaving her for dead. But Dorothy is resilient despite everything that she has been through. She just discovered that her birth mother was the West Witch and she has some sort of water magic that she used to kill her mother by accident...or so she thinks. Dorothy teams up with the Tinman in order to take down Rook for everything that he has done and caused and hopefully, she will learn about her magic along the way.

Rook, as he has decided to keep going by this name, is in a bid for power. Much like the other retellings of Oz, the Wizard is not a kind dude. He's out for power and to do that, he plans to find the gods who previously left Oz and kill them. But Dorothy is a problem he did not expect and he can't decide if he wants to kill her or...you know! Lol.

There are a lot of power play dynamics going on in Oz. This is not Baum's Oz or even Maguire's, that's for sure. This is a new land and the rules we all grew up on are no longer of consequence. It seems like everyone is fighting each other to climb to the top. Glinda, Rook, Tinman, and Gabriel's mother, is a force to be reckoned with. While she was mostly in and out throughout this book, I see her playing a larger role likely in the next book (pending that this is a trilogy, I haven't confirmed this anywhere yet).

There is a greater sense of danger in this one I feel like, Rook basically has everyone out to get Dorothy and the Tinman and kill them as they are a "threat to Oz." So the running for their lives is very real! And then the greatest bafflement of all in this one is Toto! Toto is definitely not your ordinary pooch in this one and while nothing has been confirmed, I feel like we're building into something about this little dog!

There was of course still some steamy romance going on in this one. True, while things were hot heavy with Dorothy and Rook, that love affair pretty much fizzled out when he stabbed her, so now things are heating up with the Tinman! I'm still not really attuned to Dorothy's romances so far. I guess I am missing any emotional attachment going on as it feels just physical, but then it feels like feelings are happening when they aren't fornicating. Guess we'll just have to wait and see where things go with that front.

The story ends with things in dire straits. A lot has happened, a lot is going to happen still and this definitely gives off trilogy vibes, but based on the titles so far, I wouldn't rule out a quartet just yet either! Lol. Whether that remains to be seen as of now, there's still plenty more things to come of this series and I am aching to find out, but it will likely have to wait until next year since I just binged these two books long before they release officially into the world!

If you're looking for that steamy and edgy retelling of a childhood classic, then be sure to check out The Great and Terrible Land series, starting with West of Wicked! This is one Oz retelling you will not see coming and it is unbelievable!

Creatures of the Night Book Tag

2026-10-26T09:00:00.000-05:00

So I saw this post over at Lisa Loves Literature and thought it looked like fun and I had to do it since I haven't done a "fun" post in ages. Life has gotten crazy these past few months at work and with life in general. My reading time has slipped, my bookstagram picture taking has slipped. It's been a mess, but it's 50% good things at least, the other half is crazy work life stuff, but hopefully that will start trickling down soon. But anyway...onto the fun stuff!

I am borrowing the image headers from Lisa as they're cool and festive and are better than just my font text! Lol.

A million titles starting running through my head on this one! It became overwhelming! Do I choose a recent fave? A classic fave? A villainous vampire or heroic? So naturally, I just defaulted to my first introduction to vampires that spawned the love I still hold dear: Demon in My View by Amelia Atwater-Rhodes!

This was another hard one! I had lots of titles running through my head, almost went with my first werewolf book again but then thought let's go newer old school and go back to a different obsession! 13 to Life all started with me just seeing a cover but I was obsessed! I am an equal supernatural creature lover of course!

Okay this one I am doing with a twist! Strange and Deadly by Susan Dennard releases this week but it's a sort of revamp/redo of her YA debut Something Strange and Deadly! She's made a few tweaks and changes, largely that it is now with adult characters! I will definitely be picking up a copy eventually. I think it's starting as ebook only, so once the paperback version becomes available I will get that as I can't stand reading on my kindle. I think my kindle knows this as it kind of died. It stopped updating at least and new books no longer download. So yeah. We're not on speaking terms anymore. Lol. But the YA version had zombies and that is one of the things that stayed the same for this one!

Yes, I am going all over the place with these picks! Another old school choice because I believe once again this was my first "ghost" book and I loved it! Shadowland was the first book series I remember reading with the ghosts more as characters versus entity to run away from as I think I did read one of those before this one. Lol.

So many great possibilities with this choice but I went with Rachel Morgan from The Hollows series! She's a witch, friends with a pixie and a vampire, dates an elf. This series truly has it all!

Another challenging one to choose! I decided to go off the beaten path and choose a recent read, in The Other Side of the Mirror, Eva learns she has fae in her family background and that she is one and is engage to a fae prince! This was a fun series and I enjoyed the twists and secrets!

I can't believe it's been 4 years since I've read this book! Amy Christine Parker's Flight 171 is about a plane that gets taken over by a demon! So here we have a demon who's in its true element versus being more of a character you grow to love--because yes, I've read many a book where that happens! Lol. This demon needs a new host and is demanding a group of teens pick one among them to be the new host or else the plane and everyone on it is going down! Truly creepy read and will make flying a whole lot scarier too!

And honestly, once I saw this topic, I couldn't NOT choose Obsidian! No, it wasn't my first "teen alien" book as I read the Roswell High series years before this and initially thought this series was trying to be a new Roswell, but that wasn't the case! So glad I took that long ago kindle deal (back when my kindle worked! lol).

Stacking the Shelves--Chaos & Calm Edition

2026-10-25T00:00:00.000-05:00

Stacking the Shelves is all about sharing the books you are adding to your shelves, may it be physical or virtual. This means you can include books you buy in physical store or online, books you borrow from friends or the library, review books, gifts, and of course ebooks! The meme is now hosted by Reading Reality.

Another insane week, largely because of work. I've got to stop thinking things will slow down because every time I do, I open my email to a new day filled with a TON of requests that came in overnight. It is insane. Since we're now a smaller group this means more requests per person and I somehow get the ones that are BIG! We have a rotating order and it ends up being my luck to be assigned one with a large agent number and it always ends up being the one where we need to request multiple things and then have to check each user individually to see if their "items" have been completed. I peeked last Friday night and saw we received another two big requests and I am just betting one of them will end up on me. Our team dynamic has been a little wavery since we lost two members so I don't get the idea that anyone would be willing to "trade" request items either. The last time I had two big ones I believe they were both Mondays and everyone is busy on Monday so no one was really able to assist as we sometimes would split some of the work among each other, but by the time anyone started asking if anyone needed help, I had already gotten the request done on my own. (Granted the ask didn't come until the next day in the afternoon. That's how busy we all get!) Friday night I trekked out to my favorite indie bookstore, Main Street Books to meet Hazel Beck! They were at the library the night before, but I was too worn out from work that day, that I didn't feel like making the drive, I figured I'd just do the meet & greet on Friday instead. I had a nice day out too and shopped around Main Street. Mostly browsed while I had shopped earlier at other stores on the way to Main Street! Lol. This week I am making a midweek road trip to go see Briar Boleyn! Ironically, I made a road trip to see her and another author last year around this time, I think. She ended up coming to St. Louis a week or two after that adventure, but now with this road trip I will have this latest series of hers all signed so I deemed it worth it! Taking two half days at work so we're not totally left in a lurch, so hopefully I won't come back to utter craziness, but we'll see what happens I guess.

Here's what I got this week:

Daughter of the Tempest by Braidee Otto

Devoured by Jordan Stephanie Gray--UK edition!
The Dark in Her Veins by M.K. Lobb--found this one at TJ Maxx yesterday and I had debated about the book not too long ago and impulsively bought it since I was shopping solo and no one talked me out of it! Lol. Plus it was a good deal, better than the Zon, so there you go.
Some Kind of Haunted by Hazel Beck--SIGNED!

Then I got two preorder incentives yesterday as well:

First up is The Sixth Faction lenticular postcard and leather bookmark!

THANK YOU HarperTeen!

Then I got my bag charm for The Velvet Knife!

THANK YOU HarperTeen!

And that was it for me this week! What did you get?

Book Blogger Hop #434

2026-10-23T00:00:00.000-05:00

This meme is hosted by Billy at Ramblings of a Coffee Addict!

This week's topic is: What’s the creepiest book you’ve read that isn’t officially horror, but gave you chills?

MY ANSWER: Ooh that's a tough one. I mean compared to horror aficionados my picks probably are not really "horror" like. I mean, they might be in the horror section near Stephen King but content wise they might not be as scary as his stuff.

But yes, ignoring the label of horror, I am going to go TOTALLY old school and pick Tracy Deebs' (aka Tracy Wolff) Doomed!

This book, though already over 10 years old, gosh, I feel really old now, was super scary without even being close to a "horror" novel! This plot of this book was a teenaged girl accidentally unleashed a computer virus that basically shut down ALL technology across the country and I mean ALL! 13 years ago you're probably thinking like what did we even have? Really nothing that we still don't have now. But think...nothing will work. No computers, no internet, no cell phones, no credit cards to buy things, all the machines at hospitals and such stopped working...it was freaking scary because it turned apocalypse now style because NOTHING was working. So the girl along with two (hot) brothers must work to fix it and basically undo the virus before the country just dies because we can't do anything! It was scary because I could totally see this happening and I STILL can see this happening.

Needless to say that 13 years ago, THIS was my book pick for what was once my annual Halloween giveaway.

Review--The Wings That Bind by Briar Boleyn

2026-10-22T09:00:00.000-05:00

The third installment of the viral Bloodwing Academy series is here! This dark academia romantasy delivers seductive vampires, high-stakes adventure, and dangerous romance.

The deluxe limited edition of The Wings That Bind features stenciled edges, custom endpapers, and a jacket with metallic effects! This breathtaking hardcover edition is available only on the first printing and is a must-have for any book lover while supplies last in the US and Canada.

The night's chaos left us breathless. Now the real nightmare begins.

In the wake of last winter's tragedies, through loss and heartbreak, we somehow made it to a new year. But our fight is far from over.

A second dragon has awoken--her heart tainted, and her power commandeered by two ruthless highbloods who will stop at nothing to uncover the dangerous, bloody secrets at the borders of Sangratha. Their cruelty knows no bounds.

Florence, my dearest friend, teetered on the brink of death. A dragon saved her, but now she's tied to him in a way I can scarcely understand. What will this new bond do to the woman I've come to love as a sister?

And then there's Blake. Once my relentless tormentor, then the keeper of my heart... he betrayed me again, nearly condemning Nyxaris to a cursed, stone-cold fate. But something has shifted in him. His gray eyes hide a secret he's desperate to protect. I saved Blake's life, despite everything. Yet with every heartbeat, I have to question where we go from here.

With Bloodwing Academy in turmoil and a new headmaster no one saw coming, only one thing is certain: This is going to be one hell of a year.

This dark fantasy series tackles mature themes. Readers are advised to consult the trigger warnings before embarking on this intense, morally gray/black journey through the realm of Sangratha!

I've been all over the place with my reading these days! Since I'm planning a road trip to see Briar Boleyn next week so I can have a fully signed set of these books, I thought I better get on reading The Wings That Bind as it's the third book in the series and the one before the grand finale! Luckily diving back into this one wasn't too hard with my notes and hopefully I'll be able to pick up the final book not too long from now, but knowing my luck, it will be awhile still! Lol.

We pick up where we left off which was once again, utter chaos! We open to what I believe was a new point of view, I read the first two books in their original format before moving to the big publishing house, so I don't know all of the changes that might or might not have been made. But anyway, this time we get also get Regan's point of view, Blake's wicked ex who was a capital B with an itch. But naturally, Briar decides to show us this character in a new light. While I can't call her a good person who was misunderstood, we do get a better insight to her person.

Then we also get Florence's point of view and I loved having her perspective! I've always been the quite bookish one, but with fictional books, I am not book smart! Lol. I still always feel a kinship to the bookworm whatever their choice in reading is. Florence is now bonded with a dragon, Nyxaris and it has definitely made life different for her.

That's not the only thing changing either. Big changes have come to Bloodwing Academy and it, naturally, won't be good changes. The classmates soon find themselves divided and pit against one another. Most are not for these changes, but some are embracing the change with relish.

Things continue to develop between Medra and Blake of course. They have definitely been one of those hot and cold relationships, hating one another, liking each other, then Blake messes things up and then there's more strife. They have the most up and down relationship I've ever encountered in a book before and it's mind-boggling! Lol. It's a supernatural version of Ross and Rachel practically but since we're nearing the end, hopefully things will turn out for these sometimes star-crossed lovers. They are definitely cross with one another that's for sure! But there are still plenty of heated moments between them.

Suffice to say, I cannot rank on the spicy scale! I feel like everyone has their own ranks to what's spicy and tame that putting a number on something tells me nothing unless I know how spicy your previous reads are. So I will just say that there are a few romantic interludes in the beginning portion of the novel, but when the chaos ensues, the romance takes a back seat! And Medra and Blake are not the only relationship to keep your eyes on. We get teases of another relationship and one that kind of had me theorizing things that are likely way off course, but when it's fantasy and/or paranormal, anything is fair game! Lol.

The ending to this one was pure chaos and I loved it! Of course chaos means cliffhangers galore since the cast of characters we dealt with all 400+ pages long were separated, so that's a lot of cliffies to deal with. But luckily the book is out and I get my copy next week! If you love a good paranormal fantasy romp with the classic school setting then this is a series you might just enjoy! It's set with college age students, so I guess we can call it new adult. Is that still a genre/level? But needless to say Briar Boleyn is a fantasy author to keep your eyes on if you love a good dragon and/or vampire read!

Overall Rating 5/5 stars

Books from the Backlog #208

2026-10-22T00:00:00.000-05:00

Mila Flores and her best friend Riley have always been inseparable. There's not much excitement in their small town of Cross Creek, so Mila and Riley make their own fun, devoting most of their time to Riley's favorite activity: amateur witchcraft.

So when Riley and two Fairmont Academy mean girls die under suspicious circumstances, Mila refuses to believe everyone's explanation that her BFF was involved in a suicide pact. Instead, armed with a tube of lip gloss and an ancient grimoire, Mila does the unthinkable to uncover the truth: she brings the girls back to life.

Unfortunately, Riley, June, and Dayton have no recollection of their murders, but they do have unfinished business to attend to. Now, with only seven days until the spell wears off and the girls return to their graves, Mila must wrangle the distracted group of undead teens and work fast to discover their murderer...before the killer strikes again.

I added Lily Anderson's Undead Girl Gang to my TBR pile in July of 2018...or I remembered to add it to my Goodreads then since it was a May 2018 release. You never know with me, lol. I remembered thinking this one sounded like fun! It was paranormally, it had some mystery going on and it seemed like a light-hearted read too. I mean, yes, there's murder mystery, but with the various paranormal books I've read, some have definitely had darker themes with murder, but with this fun looking cover, I was definitely getting more lighter vibes with this one. Naturally, I still want to give it a read!

2026-10-21T00:00:00.000-05:00

The gods took everything from Hades. Now he's coming to collect.

For once, I'm not the mortal condemned to face a series of deadly trials. Hades is.

To reclaim the powers that are rightfully his, the King of the Underworld must compete against the gods of Olympus-and survive a contest designed to bring even immortals to their knees.

I've lost count of how many impossible choices I've survived. I should be relieved to watch from the sidelines. Except the god I love is risking his life with every trial, and someone known only as the Deceiver is determined to destroy Team Underworld.

As ancient deception spreads across Olympus, the foundations begin to fracture from within. Hades and I must expose our hidden enemy before the gods turn against one another-and the world pays the price.

But while Hades battles the gods, I'm fighting to control the power awakening inside me. It's growing stronger. Wilder. And I'm no closer to understanding what it wants from me.

The gods think this is another game.

They're wrong.

This is war-and if anyone tries to take Hades from me, I'll show them what divine wrath really looks like.

I have enjoyed this series thus far--yes, I AM actually caught up! It's unbelievable! I plan to road trip to see Abigail and two other authors in November! It was kind of perfectly placed for a road trip signing and since there will be two other authors there, I deemed it worth the drive! Lol.

Another week in the books. Man this one was rough! I swear, every time I start to think work might be finally slowing down we're bombarded with a huge wave of requests and it's nuts. I peeked at my inbox on Friday afternoon after I was already gone and saw I had a HUGE request that I would need to do on Monday. Me being Me, I started doing some lowkey setting up. Basically filling out the documents I know will need to be filled out before I can request anything and that let me check to make sure things looked "good" before I get into the meat of things. So yeah. Fun times. I did attend one signing this week! Elizabeth Kostova came to St. Louis. You're probably thinking...what on earth was I doing there? Lol. Well, a million years ago, or what feels like it, I read The Historian! Back in those dark, lonely days where I could not find a vampire (or werewolf, or ghost, or witchy or fantastically magical) read I would pick up random like titles and The Historian was one of them! It had an essence of vampire at least and I still had my worn out copy I bought in paperback at Target ever so looooong ago and I wanted to get it signed! Then I spontaneously preordered Mystery Play, her new book at the last B&N preorder sale as it takes place in the same world with a loose connection to things that happened back in The Historian. Granted I read that mammoth too long ago to remember anything but Elizabeth said you don't have to have read that one to enjoy this one so I'm going for it...one day! Lol.

Here's what I got this week:

Love You to Death by Jenna Levine
White Mountain by Ruby Jean Cottle
A Darker Act by Amy Goldsmith
Monstera by Delilah S. Dawson
Mystery Play by Elizabeth Kostova--SIGNED!

And then I also got my Fairy Loot book for this month! I had forgotten that this particular title was the month's pick, which is fine! I was interested in it anyway! The cover is interesting and the edges are vibrant. I can't decide if I love or not. It's one of those odd kind of ones but yeah, still cool!

And then after a long wind of being very good about not requesting any ARCs, I broke down and requested something and got it right away! It sounded too good to pass up.

Forsaken Crown by Jenna Wolfhart (ARC)

THANK YOU Red Tower Books!

And then finally, as promised here are a few pictures of my new home...of course, none of the rooms look like this anymore! Lol. So this is basically the before pictures. We've ripped out the carpet to be replaced and then we're redoing the kitchen and the flooring on the main level as well. We originally weren't going to but then my dad thought we should and it was good that we did as we found a small patch of mold on the bare floor beneath. We've since attacked it with bleach and it's pretty much gone. We'll probably do one more round and then paint over it just to be safe as it wasn't that much. We think the water heater might have leaked at one point but all is good now. So hopefully sometime this year I might be able to move in! Lol.

So starting at the top from left to right, we have the main bedroom where we started ripping up carpet before I realized I forgot to take my before pictures! Lol. The carpet looks "nice" as it was vacuumed recently, but it was still a bit smelly and there was still dog hair all over the place and it was rather worn out in the main areas. So it needed to go.

Then we have a smaller room which I plan to turn into my office.

A spare bedroom.

My kitchen is the next two. It's small, but I'll make it work. The hard part is figuring out where I'll store my "backup" supplies of stuff.

The living room.

And finally the basement. We plan to fix this up a bit so I can store all my books down here where it's a little cooler and such. There's AC throughout the house and it's essentially the biggest room in the house, so the library it will be! Lol. I'm also pondering if I can wrap fairy lights around the ceiling banisters or whatever you call them! Just have to follow the trail to see where they'd plug in and if it's accessible. We're kind of making the updates from top to bottom, so to speak, so my library room will likely be last. But one always saves the best for last anyway! Lol.

There will be bookcases scattered throughout the house as well, wherever I manage to fit one or two. Already thinking about putting three in the spare room as I wanted to make that a "reading/sitting" type room, but my mom suggested a daybed and I've reluctantly agreed. lol.

I'll definitely share all the after pictures once we finish the updates and I get moved in and have everything setup. Might be awhile until that happens since we are approaching the holidays but finished pictures will come along...eventually!

And that was it for me this week! What all did you get?

This meme is hosted by Billy at Ramblings of a Coffee Addict!

This week's question is: If you designed a book-themed escape room, what puzzles would be part of it?

MY ANSWER: Oh man! I am bad at puzzles like this! I can't always remember my trivia questions either! I guess it would kind of depend on if I made it a specific theme, like towards one book/series/author. But in the general bookish sense I would maybe have players arrange a book series in order, like a nice long running one! Or a match the author name to their pen name for the ones who write under more than one name. Or a book that's been reprinted multiple times and you have to put the covers in publishing order, like which is the OG followed by the first reprint, then the second, and so on! Random things like that but then of course it will only be doable if people know said authors/books. Lol. You put me in a similar room with similar games but with authors I've never heard of and I ain't getting out! Lol.

The dazzling conclusion to #1 New York Times bestselling author Richelle Mead's The Glittering Court series.

Meet Tamsin, the Glittering Court's hard-angled emerald. Her outsized aspirations make her a fierce competitor, rising to the top of the ranks. But when the ship she boards for the New World is tragically lost at sea, she is quite literally thrown off-course.

I added Richelle Mead's The Emerald Sea to my TBR pile in June of 2018, so when it released! I remember she toured here for the book so I was able to get the rest of my collection by her signed which was awesome! But alas! I STILL have not finished this trilogy! I read the first book and liked it well enough, I think I missed the paranormal vibes but if I recall there was still some sort of magic vibe to this...or maybe it was just mysterious? I can't recall! I still want to finish it as I believe it's still the last book Mead wrote. Which I vaguely remember her mentioning she wasn't under contract for anything so she was going to explore other worlds or stories and see what comes to her. Something like that. But I'm thinking, it's been eight years and I haven't seen anything from her lately. Sigh....and yes, I am getting sad about this when I still have 2 more books of hers to read! Lol.

Review--The Emperor's Enemy by Jasmine Mas

2026-10-14T11:41:52.211-05:00

When the hunter is hunted… who becomes prey?

The Emperor’s Enemy is an addictive true enemies-to-lovers dark romantasy with a heroine who doesn’t need saving, an enemy she can’t escape, and a war neither of them plans to lose.

Welcome to the Unsurvivable Love Duet, the all-new series by Jasmine Mas, bestselling author of Blood of Hercules. The limited deluxe edition features beautifully designed sprayed edges, a foil-stamped case, and full-color character art endpapers—available while supplies last!
Zora Ravenal didn’t join the Crimson Army to be a hero. She joined to destroy the empire.

A skilled hunter hardened by loss with a concerning capacity for stubbornness, Zora claws her way into becoming a Knight Mage: the Commonwealth’s deadliest defense against the Empire’s storm magic and her people’s only hope.

It almost works.

Now she’s stuck in a war she can’t walk away from, hiding dangerous secrets, and shoved into very close quarters with the one man she should never be alone with.

He’s a Royal Mage with a body count, a temper, and an unsettling obsession… with her.

Now they’re partners.

Sort of.

If “partners” means being forced to train together, trust each other with their lives, and somehow not kill each other in the process.

But the Royal Mage isn’t just dangerous—he’s paying attention. And the longer they’re forced to remain in each other’s orbit, the more twisted everything becomes. Who’s hunting who?

Oh my! The Emperor's Enemy by Jasmine Mas was purely epic! This was my first book by the author and I am definitely continuing this series because it was fantastic! Life naturally got in my way immediately upon starting this one and kept trenching onto my reading time so it took me longer than usual to get through this one but it was in no way the book's fault! This was a lovely escape from reality and I cannot wait for the next installment!

I want to address the setting of this one first, it's fantasy...but yet...is it? I felt like we had a few nods to more modern "things" whether weaponry or clothing or some other such thing. I always find this FASCINATING! I love a good fantasy that feels somewhat modern. It breaches the fantasy/dystopian lines and it just makes for entertaining reading for me at least!

Zora has long wanted to be a Knight so that she may be able to fight for her country/kingdom can't recall the exact term we used for home location. When she passes the test and reveals that she is far more powerful than anticipated, the Marshal wants to use her for secret covet missions. Ever since she caught Tarantula, the (evil) Emperor's assassin, she has gained a bit of notoriety. Since she captured him, he's been her prisoner ever since and now the Marshal thinks Zora should have him train her to enhance her skills.

I can see how this book might not be for everyone. The pacing is a tad on the slow side, yet it was the character dynamics that kept me going! I LOOOVED the hate relationship between Zora and Tarantula, because you pretty much know what's going to happen between them given the context of the story and how the book is being marketed. That being said, the romance doesn't play a huge part in the story itself, or perhaps because it takes a very long time to develop. Then the question also becomes, is it truly romance?

But truly the shining light of this book was Squire, Zora's animal companion who is a talking Owl and he is just so cute and funny! Any heated or intense or dire moment is broken up into hysterics with his little quips! I love a good animal companion/sidekick and Squire truly takes the cake!

This book was a rollercoaster of an adventure! From start to finish I was fairly hooked its in grasp and I did not want to put it down despite the demands of reality! While the ending is somewhat cliffhangery in the terms of it being a "duet," I feel like it stopped at a fairly decent pause! Of course, every duology cliffhanger is a bit difficult to endure, I feel like this one wasn't as bad as it could have been! Still eagerly awaiting the next installment!

If you're wanting a read that blends fantasy and possibly dystopian in some extreme terms, then The Emperor's Enemy might just be up your alley! It is an action packed read filled with magic and nefarious characters that makes you wonder who you ought to be rooting for! I can't wait to see how it will continue!

Overall Rating 5/5 stars

For most of her life, eighteen-year-old Lana thought she was ordinary. But when fractured childhood memories resurface, she remembers the Lana is a Chapel, heir to one of the most powerful and feared magical families in existence.

In a world where magical families rule from the shadows, the Velascos, the Chapel family's oldest rivals, have warred with them for generations. But when a new, bloodthirsty magical family threatens to wipe them both out, the Chapels and Velascos are forced into a desperate alliance. And Lana must bind her magic with Gage Velasco, her sworn enemy.

The binding was supposed to be an Enmity spell, designed to unite their hatred into strength. Instead, it becomes an Eros binding - one rooted in love. Worse still, binding is one of the Seven Deadly Spells, and the only way it can be broken is for one of them to die.

But as the lines blur between duty and desire, Lana must protect her legacy or follow her heart into ruin.

I remember reading Weatherly's Angel trilogy ages ago and really liking it! It took me a bit to get into it, but once I did I was hooked! Not sure how I lost touch with her books as I am seeing she did have a few more release after that so now I have some decision making to do! This one does sound good though, so it's definitely on the list!

Brigid Kemmerer returns with the sizzling, high-stakes sequel to the #1 international bestseller Warrior Princess Assassin—where the betrayals are deeper, the magic burns brighter, and love might be the most dangerous weapon of all.

CAPTIVE. Asher has always sworn loyalty to Jory, the princess he’s loved from afar—but now the King of Incendar has claimed a place in his heart too. Someone wants them both dead, and only Asher’s blade can keep them safe. Yet his past won’t let him go, and he must decide if he can break free—or remain prisoner to his old scars.

TRAITOR. Princess Jory of Astranza agreed to marry the King of Incendar to secure peace, but betrayal runs closer than she ever imagined. With her own brother unmasked as her enemy, two kingdoms teeter on the edge. To protect her people, she must take the throne. But there are still dark secrets to unravel that will force Jory to confront where her true allegiance lies.

KING. Maddox Kyronan has discovered trust—and something more—with his reluctant bride and her deadly protector, but the fragile alliance between their nations threatens to unravel. His people are starving. His enemies are circling in. Torn between the crown and his heart, Ky risks losing it all.

As buried truths surface and tensions reach a breaking point, Jory, Asher, and Ky must confront the desires that could save their kingdoms—or shatter them forever.

While I am still not super big on this Why Choose trope, I do enjoy Kemmerer's writing and while the romance aspects can be eyeroll worthy at times ) I am still intrigued by the rest of the story! Maybe this second installment will help change my mind on the Why Choose...not super likely, but we'll see! Lol. Still want to read it!

Another long week done. Seriously counting down the days to November as that's just about when we start to slow down at work. It's still been pretty nuts this week. I just can't wait for this busy season to be over. Incredibly grateful to have a job after we lost people, but this busy season has been rough with two less on our team. Yesterday was the busiest day of all! I woke up super early to head to the library where they host the annual St. Lous Teen Author Book Festival. It's been in December the past several years but they moved it to October this year. I lined up early, because you never know what the crowd will be like. I was dismayed to learn that one of the two authors that I wanted to meet had to pull out at the last second. The other author I did get to meet was Ayana Gray! I still need to read Hawk & Sparrow, but it was nice to get my FL copy signed! Then after spending all day there, I went to join my parents for our monthly volunteer work at our local American Legion where we work in the kitchen during Bingo night. I'm writing this post after a very long day, so I am wiped out. I promise pictures of my new house in its "before" stage are coming. I just have so little energy right now that it's taking everything I have left to write this post with bleary eyes.

Anyway...onto the books! More preorders came in, then I had an impulse order that I legit did the day before B&N's sale which aggravated me, so I even more impulsively purchased a random book from my list to get some double point action! Yeah...I've got problems. Lol.

A Masterpiece in Blood by Megan Scott--I think this one was a duology? My brain is overtired, so I can't remember how long the series was or is projected to go. This was a B&N preorder sale pick so it showed up this week!
Reap & Sow by Charlotte B. Plumb
Little Red Death by Alexandra Benedict--randomly found this one the old fashioned way and had to get it!
The Stolen Crown by L.J. Andrews--my very, very bad addiction of buying books to a series I still need to start...someone talk me out of doing this! I don't know what my problem is! Lol
Mighty Morphin Power Rangers: The Return by Amy Jo Johnson--so I started listening to the Boy Meets World podcast a few months ago and I listened to a random interview they had with Amy as I LOVED the Power Rangers and particularly Amy's character and it was through this that I learned she helped to create this comic book series (4 issues) of the 90s Power Rangers some years later. It just sounded SO cool and I had to get it!
Dive Bar At the End of the Road by Kelley Armstrong
Devoured by Jordan Stephanie Gray
Devoured by Jordan Stephanie Gray--Target edition!
The Sixth Faction by Veronica Roth--cannot wait to read this one! But likely will be waiting until next year when I have the second installment in hand!
Hollow's Hauntology by Evelyn Hollow--odd that Goodreads has the title wrong on its image. But I stumbled upon this one somewhere and marked it on my list so when the B&N sale popped up I just ordered this randomly because I really wanted double points! Lol. Plus it does sound like an intriguing read! Like a book Sam & Dean would find helpful!

And that was it for me this week! Definitely got more than I remembered ordering. And I even did good at avoiding Target's Buy 2, Get 1 Sale. I mean, I looked...but ultimately talked myself out of it! Lol.

What did you get this week?

This meme is hosted by Billy at Ramblings of a Coffee Addict!

This week's question is: Do you run more than one blog? If so, how do you manage your time?

MY ANSWER: Absolutely not! Lol. A long, loooong time ago, I dallied with having a movie review blog as well. Like in 2010 or 2011? Something like that and I was just going to post different movie reviews as in a pre-Covid world, I went to the movies A LOT! Since Covid I rarely go. Just because the prices are so high, that I feel like waiting for the DVD or streaming to see it cheaper.

I think that blog lasted less than a year...probably less than 6 months, maybe even less than 3 months. I can't remember. There was probably less than 10 reviews. Because it did just feel like too much. And I was thinking I just don't want to do this. What on earth that url/domain was, I have no clue. I think I was trying to keep it in line with a GREAT watch...a GREAT movie??? Something that was GREAT in the title! Lol.

But yeah, whatever that blog was called, I didn't keep it up for long at all because it was too much and I was having more fun with my book blog! So I decided if I wanted to review a movie, I'd just review it here! Which I rarely do that anymore either because I rarely go to the movies and when I finally see those movies I wanted to see when they were initially in theaters it's been like a year. Seriously, I still have a stack of Black Friday deal DVDs that I need to watch from I don't know how many years! Granted I may only need to watch 1 or 2 for the first time and the others were just deals that I wanted or was in that buy 2 get 2 or something like that deal.

Betrayal. Sacrifice. Survival.
Welcome to the Extinction Trials.

In Stormchaser and Lincoln's ruined world, the only way to survive is to risk everything. To face a contest more dangerous than anyone can imagine. And they will do anything to win.

But in a land full of monsters - human and reptilian - they can't afford to trust anyone. Perhaps not even each other...

I've been meaning to read S.M. Wilson's The Extinction Trials since I added it to my TBR pile in June of 2018 which is pretty much when it released! It sounded SOOO good and I remember reading a review for it that made me want it asap! The pitch The Hunger Games meets Jurassic Park made me need it! Lol. Never read either, but loved the JP movies, so yes, I needed it! Still haven't read it and there are two more books to the series that I am hoping I can still find eventually!

Torn from her home and forced to train at the brutal Forge as a child, Thalia Marrow has only ever known the life of a Scion—one sworn to guard the Library of Curses. But on the night she crosses paths with an enigmatic Fae, the Library is ransacked, and her brother is taken by demons, leaving Thalia as one of the last Scions still alive.

Desperate to find her only family, Thalia follows the bloody trail to the mysterious Soren—a ruthless warrior who was cursed and banished from the Fae world. Everything about him is dangerous. Everything about him calls to her.

Bound by necessity, the warrior librarian and the Fallen Fae must now work together to uncover what happened at the Library and unmask the shadowy new demon leader unleashing curses across the realm. But in the decadent, treacherous city of Delfs, not all is as it seems. As the threat of war rises and Thalia’s feelings for Soren grow, so too does the truth of his bloody past—and the curse that could destroy them both.

I loved Christo's first book I read ages ago and have been meaning to read her other books pretty much ever since. I know I didn't get into her sophomore duology, but I've added her last two after that to my TBR pile! And just look at those edges!
