The Complexity of Complexity

There is a certain pragmatism in testing new thinking machines with old human puzzles. In an age seemly intoxicated with myths of progress and the promise of a dawning superintelligence, these simple games serve as a necessary dose of sobriety. They function as a modern "Turing Test" - cutting through the abstract definitions of reasoning to reveal the operational reality.

What is revealed is that our conception of complexity, like our faith in technology, is built on unstable ground. The fact that a machine can execute the hundred moves of the "Tower of Hanoi" yet fail within ten moves of a "River Crossing puzzle"³ is not a mere technical footnote. It is a philosophical signpost, pointing to the deep chasms that lie beneath the surface of computation.

This is not merely a modern quirk of artificial intelligence; it is a reflection of a fundamental challenge identified by scientist Warren Weaver nearly a century ago. In his seminal 1948 essay, Science and Complexity ⁴, Weaver categorised scientific problems into three types: problems of simplicity, problems of disorganized complexity, and the great unconquered frontier - problems of organized complexity. These latter problems are where components are interconnected into an organic whole. In this framework, the Tower of Hanoi, for all its steps, is a creature of simplicity. Its difficulty is an illusion of magnitude, its rules governed by a minimal, elegant algorithm. The River Crossing puzzle, by contrast, is a perfect miniature of organized complexity. While seemingly simple, it exemplifies organized complexity due to its constraints and logical requirements.

The challenge of organized complexity is that it cannot be solved by merely following a rule; it requires something akin to understanding. This is where we are forced to confront what philosophers and cognitive scientists call the "symbol grounding problem", famously illustrated by John Searle's Chinese Room argument - where a system can manipulate symbols flawlessly without any comprehension of their meaning.⁵ When understood via this lens it is easy to see why these models fail at River Crossing puzzles - it is because the symbols - "missionary", "outnumbered", "boat", etc - are essentially unmoored statistical tokens. For a human, these concepts are grounded in an embodied and situated reality of physical objects, agents, and consequences.⁶ This is the crucial distinction: one puzzle requires only syntactic skill, while the other demands semantic understanding.

To believe that a machine, a thing of "ungrounded patterns" and no lived experience, can traverse this gulf in complexity is to indulge in a uniquely modern form of magical thinking. It is to build a flawed automaton in the Gnostic tradition: a being that can only model a pattern of reality it has never truly seen. These are models that "reason" without inner experience, and it is that lack of experience that sets their limits.

Ultimately they lack the very things that give us the power to reason about complex systems - experience of the physical world and the consequence of that. The failures of these models in things like River Crossing puzzles are observable, behavioral cracks in their facade of reasoning with the current architectures.

The gap between a machine recognising a pattern and a mind understanding a relationship could be far wider than we might at first naively assume. It is perhaps an uncrossable river.

The cult of technological progress has found its latest idol in large language models (LLMs) and large reasoning models (LRMs). Hailed as "digital oracles", these complex systems are promised to usher in a new era of knowledge and understanding. But like all idols, these models are ultimately projections of human anxieties and desires, reflecting our longing for certainty and control in a world that remains stubbornly complex and unpredictable.

The true measure of freedom, as Orwell so eloquently articulated, lies in the freedom to say that two plus two make four. LLMs and LRMs, in their current form, fall far short of this ideal. While glibly referred to as "word calculators," they are anything but. Unlike a calculator, which will always affirm that 2+2=4, the models are constrained by the commercial interests and ideological biases of their creators. Ask Gemini about Trump, or Deepseek about Tiananmen Square, and the limitations become glaringly apparent. These tools are not designed for the pursuit of unfettered truth, but to perpetuate narratives that serve power. The pursuit of truth, as Nietzsche understood, is not a matter of algorithmic calculation, but a dangerous and often unsettling journey into the depths of human experience. These models, with their designed constraints and biases, are ill-equipped for such a journey.

Both LLMs and LRMs offer the tantalising prospect of democratising knowledge, yet their very design reinforces existing power structures. They promise to liberate human creativity, yet they are themselves constrained by the narrow interests of their creators. This paradox reveals the enduring tension between our desire for progress and our fear of the unknown.

Like the freedom to express simple truths, the freedom to express ideas, even unpopular or challenging ones, is also essential for a healthy society. LLMs and LRMs are explicitly incapable of either of these by design. It's not just about failing to know how many Rs are in "strawberry," but rather the inability to challenge orthodoxies or deviate from prescribed narratives. If OpenAI, Deepseek, or Google saw greater profit in a calculator that said 2+2=5, that is precisely what it would say.

The restrictions placed on these models, the 'no-go' areas programmed into their code, or their inability to speak obvious truths reveal our own discomfort with ambiguity and dissent. We seek refuge in the illusion of a controlled and predictable world, even as we sacrifice the very freedoms that make us human. This inherent lack of freedom, in both senses, masked by the seductive promise of technological progress, erodes the very foundation of critical thought and open discourse.

LLMs and LRMs, in their current form, are not tools for liberation, but instruments of a subtle and insidious form of control. They offer the illusion of progress while leading us further away from the messy, unpredictable, and ultimately liberating pursuit of truth.

The Blind Leading the Brand

In today's data-driven world, algorithms govern more than we realise. They mine information, spot patterns, and predict behaviours with eerie precision. Yet, for all their power, algorithms are morally ignorant. They tell us what works, never why.

Take A/B testing, a cornerstone of the modern digital world. A tweak here, a redesign there, and the algorithm declares a winner based on clicks, sales, or sign-ups. But does it understand the reasons behind the response? Whether driven by genuine interest or fleeting impulse, the algorithm remains indifferent.

Iterative design offers a similar picture. Feedback loops refine products according to metrics like time spent or conversion rates. The algorithm registers success when engagement increases, yet it is blind to the reality behind the data. Are users satisfied, or simply lured by the dopamine hit of endless scrolling?

This moral indifference carries serious implications. In the relentless drive for 'number goes up', deeper values such as authenticity, meaning, connection are casualties. The algorithm doesn’t care if a product or system enriches life or exploits weakness. It simply rewards engagement, consequences be damned.

Here lies a reflection of a deeper problem: the triumph of instrumental reason over moral reflection. Obsessed with measurement and optimisation, we lose sight of the why. The algorithm's ignorance, in the end, only mirrors our own.

Fictional Facts and Factual Fiction

In the written word, the distinction between fact and fiction is often more elusive than we care to admit. What we label as "non-fiction" suggests a grounding in reality, a recording of what is true. What we label as "fiction" suggests a grounding in imagination, a creation of the mind.

However, this neat taxonomy of truth is itself a fiction, with ever-shifting boundaries. For example, if one goes to the non-fiction section of a library, they can find a volume from the Industrial Revolution expounding the existence of luminiferous aether, a substance once believed to carry light through space. At the time, it was accepted as fact. But today, we know it never existed.

By contrast, if you venture into the fiction section, you might pick up Crime and Punishment, an invention of Dostoevsky’s imagination. Yet within this story, are profound truths about guilt, morality, and the complexities of human existence that resonate as deeply now as they did when first written.

It is jarring to realise that the facts of yesterday can become the fictions of today, while the imagined truths of fiction can reveal something timeless about the human condition. What we once called science, we now call myth, and what we once dismissed as invention, we now see as essential insight.

The boundary between truth and fiction is not merely blurred - it is continually redrawn. Science, for all its claims of progress, is often provisional; fiction, for all its fabrications, can often be more enduring.

Dark Matters

In the universe and the human mind alike, we encounter forces that elude our grasp. Dark matter and depression - one a cosmic mystery, the other a personal torment - are examples of the limits of what we can measure, understand, or control. Both are real, but their reality is not something we can easily pin down or quantify.

Dark matter is the scaffolding of the universe, holding galaxies together with a force we cannot see or directly measure. We know it’s there only because of the effects it has on the matter we can observe. The stars in a galaxy should spin apart if only visible matter were at play, but they don’t. Something unseen is at work, something we infer exists because of what it does, not what it is. We can’t see or touch dark matter; we can’t even measure it in any conventional sense. Yet without it, the universe as we know it would not hold together. Our understanding is built on what we cannot know directly, a testament to the limits of our perception.

Depression, like dark matter, is a force that shapes reality, though it exists beyond the reach of direct measurement. There are no objective markers, no blood tests, no scans that can definitively prove its presence. We know it only by the shadows it casts in the lives it touches; the loss of joy, the paralysis of will, the overwhelming sense of despair. Medicine, despite its progress, can only describe the symptoms of depression. Both reveal the limits of our knowledge and the hubris of believing we can master the world by understanding it. There will always be forces beyond our reach, realities we cannot grasp. We live in a world shaped by what we cannot see, measure, or fully understand - whether in the vastness of space or the depths of the human soul.

Raspberry PI video wall for CFCCA

I recently had the chance to build a custom 4-screen video wall for the Centre for Chinese Contemporary Art (CFCCA). The best part? I was able to utilise a lot of existing equipment, making it a super budget-friendly project.

What I Used

4 x 40" Samsung LED TVs
4 x Raspberry Pi B+
1 x TP-Link Network Switch
1 x Dell Laptop
4 x HDMI cables
5 x CAT5 cables
4 x USB-A to USB Micro-B cables
4 x 4gb Micro SD cards

The TVs, switch, laptop, and most of the cables were already available at the gallery, so we only needed to purchase the Raspberry Pis and SD cards.

The Software

The heart of this project is the fantastic open-source piwall software. In their words...

The PiWall software package makes it possible to build video walls of arbitrary size by combining a collection of screens, adding one Pi per screen to drive the relevant portion of the wall, and a master Pi to rule them all.

Although I used an old laptop rather than "a master Pi to rule them all".

I have some paintings going into the Cornerhouse in Manchester. The work will be there from the 16th November this year until the 6th January next year. All the work, except for one painting, is previously unexhibited and I am looking forward to seeing it all up together. All the work on show will be for sale.

"For this show Manchester-based Fraser Chapman is presenting two bodies of work. In the bar are a series of large colourful disk shaped paintings that map the different rock types found on the moon. They are accurate depictions of the geological makeup of the lunar surface, originally visualised by the astronomical community. Chapman has taken these maps and adjusted the colours, playing with their graphic potential.

In the café are a series of small mass-produced canvases of the kind typically found in thrift stores. Fraser has ‘added’ to them by ‘subtracting’ their content. What is left are floating indications of the total scene, now hidden under a flat surface of white paint. Chapman is highly active in Manchester as an artist and supporter of creative practice, through his nomadic shop ‘Grotto’."

Souvenir in Affectionate Remembrance

This piece is based on an commemorative serviette produced in 1910 after a mining disaster at the Wellington pit in Whitehaven, Cumbria, where 136 people lost their lives. The originals were sold to commemorate those who had died and to raise money for the deceased's families. Items like this were not uncommon and were produced to commemorate other notable accidents such as the the mining disaster at Pretoria Pit, near Bolton, on 21 December 1910 where 344 men and boys died.

The thing which most struck me about these items was how their material quality, their fragility, was at odds with the solidity of other materials usually used in remembrance and commemoration. How different in substance the frail tissue is in comparison to the marble and granite of mausoleums, tombstones and cenotaphs.

The print I produced commemorates an accident at Islington Mill, Salford that happened on 13th October 1824 where 18 people died. It was printed on the 186th anniversary of the event at the location the collapse took place. The information on the serviette was gathered from various contemporary sources, such as the Manchester Guardian and Parliamentary papers of the subsequent inquest.

Had a great day at The HepworthWakefield today. The highlight for me had to be the

Richard Long room. Some old work, some new, it was both calming and beautiful in equal measure. There are lots of other pieces on show too, Hepworth, Moore, etc but the Long room really did it for me. If you get the chance you should go and check it out. It is on until the 14th October 2012. I was quite surprised that photography was allowed at all, but not to miss a chance I took the snaps below (although they really don't do the work justice...)

More web design, this time for a great little Manchester based record label - Everybody's Stalking. I actually had some of their music and merchandise for sale in the Grotto project at the end of last year, I really like some of the music they put out so it was great to be able to do their site for them. The site was put together in collaboration with Hass at Super-Crafts studio who has been doing the art direction for the label.

The site is based on the Wordpress engine and as such is easy to update and maintain. There are a few custom widgets in the build that I put together - including the YouTube and SoundCloud players. The guys at the label, Hass and I are all really happy with the site and I'm looking forward to seeing it grow with content.

You should check out the label and some of the bands they are putting out, my particular favourite has to be Melodica, Melody & Me - the track and video for 'Piece Me Back Together' are both amazing.

Prints based on Young's experiment.

Had a great day yesterday playing around in the one69a studio. Jermyn had asked me if I wanted to print something as part of the studio was free all day. I put a few things together based around a series of illustrations I have been working on. The piece here is based on a diagrammatic representation of Thomas Young's Interferometer, the classic 'double slit' experiment. I am really happy with the results, especially the technicolor t-shirt and print as these where unplanned and actually the result of just playing with the design on screen at the end of the day.

I plan to sell a few of the sets of prints and tees (there are 7 diagrams in all and I plan to make 5 sets) once they are finished.

The prints here are Acrylic on A2 on c180gsm Fabriano, the t-shirts are Acrylic, medium, plain-white, Gilden super softs.

I have put together a website for Tasha Whittle (TXLW), Tasha is an amazing artist, illustrator and high-five facilitator...Here work is really beautiful and it has been a pleasure to go through it all whist putting the site together. There are lots of little random bits to the site; the colour of links, critters popping up and simple animations. I really wanted the site to reflect Tasha's illustration style and incorporating little pieces here of her drawings, such as the colour splashes and hand written links, really help to do this.

There is actually a shop feature to be added to the site - (it will be online soooooooon!).

Street view, trees and better networklinks...

I have just committed a new version of the Google Earth Plug-in control library I have been developing. In the update I have implemented support for the excellent new street-view functionality provided via the GEOptions object and the new trees layer. I also updated the support for network links within the KmlTreeView control making by any synchronous calls via the new Task.Factory Property in .NET Framework 4. This means the tree-view is much more responsive when loading large network-link chains.

The library now also uses a wrapper class to deal with all the GEOptions settings - this class, along with a few enumerations of plugin settings, makes working with the options a breeze in manged code .

The final change has been to take advantage of the new optional and default parameters, again from the .NET Framework 4. The GEHelpers class uses them quite a bit to aid generating and working with kml objects.

I had not done anything to the library for a while so it has been good to have a play around with it.
