Review: 40858 SpongeBob SquarePants

Who lives in a pineapple under the sea? BrickHeadz SquarePants!

Alongside the release of 11386 SpongeBob SquarePants: Bikini Bottom, LEGO has also produced a blocky model of SpongeBob. Unlike the larger set, 40858 SpongeBob SquarePants has attracted much criticism since its reveal.

Is the disdain warranted? I have been interested in finding out, and now is the time...

Review: 11385 Star Trek: U.S.S. Enterprise NCC-1701 Bridge

Posted by ,

Star Trek celebrates its 60th anniversary in 2026 and 11385 Star Trek: U.S.S. Enterprise NCC-1701 Bridge seems like a superb concept to mark the occasion. The command bridge aboard the NCC-1701 is a classic location and one that should be perfect for a LEGO diorama.

Indeed, I mentioned the possibility when speculating about LEGO Star Trek in 2024, but I am slightly surprised by its execution, extending beyond the bridge and into the transporter room. The result is a model bigger and more expensive than I expected, though it does look impressive.

Review: 72163 Mewtwo's Lab Break

Posted by ,

A legendary Pokémon that was created as a genetically manipulated clone of Mew in the hope of unlocking some of life’s secrets, Mewtwo instead became a weapon and the ultimate monster. This imposing figure looks just as unsettling as its animated counterpart, suspended in a containment cylinder in Dr Fuji’s laboratory.

This set offers fans a fun way to observe and display Mewtwo in stasis, and reenact scenes from Pokémon: The First Movie - Mewtwo Strikes Back with a breakout action. Read on to find out if it stacks up among its SMART Play line or better serves as a display.

Please note: This set does not contain a SMART Brick.

Review: 40859 Golden Age Superman and Batman

Posted by ,

The period between 1938 and 1956 is known as the Golden Age of Comics, when lots of popular comic book characters initially appeared. 40859 Golden Age Superman and Batman groups two such characters together, based on their classic 1940s designs.

Even though eight models of Batman appeared in 40748 Batman 8 in 1, this rendition is unique, while Superman has only appeared once before in a retail BrickHeadz set, so I am pleased to see him available again, in a comic-inspired costume.

The special certainly looks good to me, with great animation and some funny moments, as you might expect. I look forward to seeing it next month.

You can watch the trailer for LEGO Star Wars: The Mandalorian after the break...
