Wounded Love #2

Soldier's Heart

Rate this book
Isaiah Wright is broken. So broken he's positive he'll never be fixed again. Surviving every soldier's worst nightmare is enough for him to want nothing more than to give into the blackness that plagues him.

Emma Nicholls knows pain. Four years after the devastating loss of her fiancé, she's set up her own business providing service dogs to veterans in an attempt to put her own life back together.

Circumstance brings Isaiah into her life, but neither are prepared for the fire that burns between them. It's immediate, one broken soul finding solace in another, but it's also... terrifying.

His soldier's heart is surrounded by walls ten feet high. But maybe, just maybe, Emma and her brood of trainee service dogs can break through and be the light he so desperately needs.

I feel like this book was designed to maximize impact on my feels. From the adorable cover, to the heartwarming premise, everything about Soldier’s Heart screamed my name. I was not disappointed. This book tackles some pretty heavy subject matter—stirring up tears and this whole whirlwind of emotions that didn’t die down until the (lovely and satisfying) epilogue. That said, it didn’t feel like a heavy book. The heavy pieces were balanced out with touches of light humor and…puppies. That’s right—if you are a dog lover? This book is for you.

This was my first book by Megan Green, and the second in a series. I think it worked well as a standalone, though I definitely feel like reading the first book would have enhanced the reading experience, especially for the first 10% of the book. That said, I still connected strongly to Isaiah and Emma. I loved them—particularly Emma with her matter-of-fact acceptance of the cards that life has dealt her, and her quirky, fun personality. She’s a strong heroine, incredibly likeable, and I found it impossible not to root for her.

Isaiah is a bit more damaged—he’s carrying more baggage than he knows what to do with and it’s thrown his life way off track. Circumstance brings him to Emma’s dog training business and there he finds peace and happiness, and makes the first steps towards healing. I loved Isaiah’s story, the journey that he took, and all the bumps along the way. While the love story was sweet and swoony, Isaiah’s personal story resonated with me even more. His journey was inspiring and heartwarming, and he’s a character who will stick with me for a long time.

I really enjoyed this entire book. I laughed a little. I cried…kind of a lot. There were some unexpected twists and turns, lots of sweet and a dash of sizzle—and heaps of adorable puppies that made what could have been a dark, heavy story feel light and hopeful. ~ Shelly, 4 stars

5 *Amazing, Beautiful Stars*!!!!! I adored this story and these characters! I am a huge sucker for anything to do with dogs and this had my heart smiling! Another huge love of mine is for anything to do with the Military and our Veterans. As the Mother of a Soldier with many deployments under his belt, this story really touched me. Emma is amazing and Isaiah - don't get me started on the hot, sweet, awesome guy! Highly recommend this book!

Of all the categories of Romance that exist, Military Romance is my absolute favorite. In reality, service members have difficulty overcoming obstacles of love because of the things they witness and endure in their careers. I love when authors of Military Romance accurately discuss things such as PTSD and touch on elements of the life of someone serving and defending our country because it brings awareness to readers of the struggles and sacrifices of those people.
Megan Green is one of those authors, and in her second book of the Wounded Love series, Soldier's Heart, she does not disappoint in her delivery. Just as her first book in the series, Safe Distance, Soldier's Heart is real, raw and beautifully written.
Isaiah has suffered more than his fair share of mental anguish and distress while deployed as a Marine. As difficult as it is, he is trying to gain a semblance of a normal life again. He can't forget, but he wants to move on.
Emma is still healing from her own wounds, but is determined to help those who've come home from fighting, not only to assist a community of veterans, but to honor a memory.
Soldier's Heart is a story that pulls you apart and twists your gut -- but you cannot put it down. You root for Isaiah and Emma from page one all the way until THE END. There is also an element of suspense that keeps a mysterious question mark in your head throughout. All around, this book is composed of everything you'd want and expect in a military romance, including a message of how honest love binds and overshadows darkness of the past.
This book is a must read. And while it can be read as a standalone, I highly recommend that you start with Safe Distance.

This is my first read by this author and I really enjoyed it.

Isaiah is finding each day a struggle. He's suffering from PTSD.
Emma is also broken. She's struggling to move on from the loss of a loved one.
Can these two broken souls help each other to heal?

This is a beautiful emotional read that I read in one sitting. Looking forward to reading more from this author.

Heartwarming military trope with feels. Cover alone it grabbed my dog loving heart. As a owner of a Golden Retriever I can attest to how easy it is to love them. Such wonderful personalities and sweet dogs. This made this story more meaningful and a cause I believe in. A feel good kind of read with serious notes of PTSD.

The feels. That is what I would use as a perfect description of this book. The feels. What exactly does that mean? It means that no matter where you are in this book you will feel some emotion. That to me is the perfect formula to a great book. If you don't fall in love with Isaiah and Emma you may just need to leave the romance genre because this is the perfect example of a great formula to a great book.

Typically I am not one to start a series in the middle, however, I was not away that this was a second in a series. That being said I was not aware that it was a 2nd book until I was about a quarter of the way through. I was too invested in the book at that point to even want to stop and read the first one and then turn around and go back to this one.

I love the way that Emma and Isaiah form a relationship. They meet in the not so typical of ways. Isaiah is dealing with some major PTSD after being in the Army. He is having a rough time and his therapist thinks that him going to work with some service dogs will help him deal with his demons. Emma is the owner of the rescue dogs and trains them after trying to find her way with dealing with the death of her fiance after he was killed in action. Isaiah is a bit off putting to say the least and sees this a just a way to appease his therapist. What he didn't expect was to fall in love with Emma along the way.

Like I said I love the character development. You actually want to see where this is going to go and fall in love along the way with Isaiah and Emma. Life is not easy for either one of them, but that is what makes a great book. We want the mystery, the skip in heartbeat and emotions as we read. Emma is not your typical character that allows people to walk all over her. She is not weak. Isaiah is not the strong male character that you expect. He is broken and the pieces are not put together fast. it is like he needs a reason to live. Again- the feels!!

I have just spent the entire day in bed reading this book. It is Good Friday and raining outside so the perfect opportunity to get lost in Isaiah & Emma's story.

Isaiah is a broken man. Two of his mates were killed in combat, right beside him and he lives his life buried under the guilt and remorse that it should have been him. He believes it was his fault they died and he will forever regret the decisions he made that day. He struggles with nightmares, panic attacks and sorrow gnaws at his heart.

Emma too knows what it feels like to carry loss around with you every day, her fiance was killed in combat four years ago. Since then she has been able to move forward with a business she set up helping injured soldiers with their PTSD. With dogs. Cute, loveable golden retrievers. I have one of my own at home and know just how sweet they are so I could just picture these wonderful dogs in this story.

Isaiah, a non dog lover, on the recommendation of his therapist, shows up to volunteer as a trainer with Emma. Little did they know that this would be just the beginning of their story. The power of animals in the healing process for humans is nothing short of miraculous and the changes in Isaiah definitely reflect this. The more time he spends around these lovely dogs the better he is able to cope with his internal pain. The fact that Emma is a beautiful girl is also a bit of a draw card.

This is a sweet story about loss, forgiveness and learning to open your heart to love again.

'We're like two pieces of the same puzzle, finally coming together to make something beautiful.'

I was pulled right into this story. This is the first story I read by this author and I was not disappointed. The story has laughs, pain, PTSD, cute puppies, stalker, and heartbreak.

This is Emma and Isaiah’s story. Emma owns a business that trains service dogs. Isaiah’s therapists sent him to Emma so he can heal and help train a dog for his friend. Isaiah does not like dogs but he will do anything for his friend. He has PTSD and when he starts to have an attack Emma and a cutie puppy pull him out of it. He believes with what happened overseas he does not deserve Emma. A stalker has agreed. Can he figure out who what’s him hurting before they get to Emma? Can Emma convince him that he is worth all the trouble that comes with him? Can Emma and a puppy heal Isaiah?

I felt I was able to connect with the characters and the story was a great read.

I recommend this book.

This book has all the feels! It's actually a very sweet book that gives you the insight of what it is like to live with PTSD. It hurts to think how many soldiers come back with it and don't get the help they need.

One heart broken and one man that feels broken. Throw in a couple of puppies and Maggie and you definitely have a winning combination. You get to see them as friends at first and then that friendship grow into something more.

I honestly loved this book and will definitely be reading more from this author. She knows how to pull at your heartstrings that's for sure!

Let me begin with I had not read the first book in this series as you don’t need to – they are stand alones – but let me know add that I immediately went and clicked on the Safe Distance the minute I turned the last page of Soldier’s Heart .. yes .. it was that good. The cover of Soldier's Heart ... sigh ... it took my breath away as crazy as that sounds but after you read the book look at it again.

There is so much I want to say about this book but first I want to thank Megan for doing her research. When you review books you read all the dedications, end notes etc. At the end of this wonderful journey we find that Megan is donating 20% of all sales during release month from Soldier’s Heart to www.pawsforpurplehearts.org. Second not only does she receive the first star rating from the book but also as a person from me. She correctly cites the numbers …. Every 65 minutes a veteran commits suicide – that is about 22 a day. There are numerous organizations out there to support in helping our soldiers find their way home. Please do something on your end. These men and women have already given us so much.

Isaiah Wright lives with PTSD, survivors guilt, nightmares that leave him waking up screaming desperately trying to defend himself from enemies that aren’t even there --- He suffers from more than one man should have to. He is desperately trying to find his way back. When a solider leaves his heart comes back changed. Six months ago he lost his soul but not his life like his brothers. His therapist Beth thinks going to volunteer at Keen Komrades will help him; will be beneficially to his recovery. The last time she said those words to him things didn’t work out to well. One week is all Beth asks for. Isaiah will give her one week – he isn’t a dog person but .. yeah one week. He can do one week and prove to Beth that the pills are the only thing that can help him find peace.

Emma Nicholls and Joey started Keen Komrades after the tragic loss in her life. It wasn’t either of them who inspired the ranch; it was Emma’s beloved Maggie. Relying 100 percent on donations and volunteers, Joey’s idea to work with Beth to find more veterans willing to help is genius. Joey wants to expand and be able to offer more for veterans in need. Losing Chris brought more physical pain than Emma can imagine but also brought her a purpose. Joey survived that day and together they are building something incredible. There has not been anyone since Chris died … four years she hasn’t felt anything until Isaiah.

This journey is incredible and heartbreaking. Its inspiring and real. It’s a story I will read over and over again. The small glimpse Megan gives you into the agony soldiers experience when returning home from overseas is horrendous. I know because I live with one of those men --- therefore, this book struck a very personal chord with me. Emma and Isaiah are absolutely beautiful characters.

There are so many secondary characters that we also need a story from. Joey – yup need to know. Haley and Amanda are Emma’s best friends, Justin is Amanda’s husband and we get to experience Haley and Ryan’s wedding in this release. All of the characters except Isaiah are tied to Chris making a particular moment at the wedding soul crushing but fitting.

Megan outdid herself. I read this book in one sitting – grab it up and embrace the words on these pages. Let the story consume you. Incredible …. Thank you Megan for the ARC. Now Im off to read Safe Distance. Thank you for writing this and I look forward to the next release.

I recently finished Soldier's Heart and I loved it! It rotates the POV from Emma to Isaiah so you get the full experience from both aspects. Both have their own fears to face, but seem to have a common ground. Coming from a small town near a military base, situations in the book are considered a common occurrence in the area that I live. The trials and tribulations in this book are sad but true. Through Megan's words, you get to experience the harsh reality of how some of our veterans return to us. Too often, our veterans are overlooked and don't receive the assistance they need. This is the journey of Isaiah and his story of making his way home and Emma learning to move on with her life.

I could not put this book down, that is how much I loved Emma and Isaiah's story. It had everything I look for in a book - it was sweet, funny, and had a hint of suspense.

Megan did an awesome job bringing this story to life for me. Often I felt like I was just sitting in a corner and watching everything play out like a movie.

I'm glad Emma finally got her ending she deserved and can't wait until Megan's next release.

I just finished Soldier's Heart & absolutely loved it! This is the second book in a series, but can certainly be read as a stand alone. Emma and Isaiah's story was very unique, filled with love, loss, suspense and adorable puppies being trained for PTSD; however, I must say my favorite character was Jasper.

I loved this book from Megan! Such a great follow-up to Safe Distance, even though they're standalones. It was nice to still get a glimpse of Haylee and Ryan while watching Emma and Isaiah's relationship grow into something neither of them were looking for or knew they wanted. A beautiful story about loss and how to overcome it with the help of those around you.

Well done, Megan!!!

This was my first book by this author and I loved it. A sweet gentle romance with lots of heart. I loved watching Isiah open up and break down the barriers causing some of his traumas. Emma is a beautiful soul, open and giving, with a sassy sense of humour.

I love the idea of service dogs to assist soldiers returning from deployment who suffer from PTSD etc, especially when veterans are also given the opportunity to volunteer as part of their therapy.

I found this slow burn romance easy to read. I loved all the friendships and relationships throughout the story and the low angst levels.

Highly recommend!

Wow

I absolutely fell in love with these two. Emma had already been through something so so tragic with Chris. I was hoping to see her find love once again. Isaiah was the absolute perfect man for her. He was broken and needed help. Her and Jasper was exactly what he needed. This whole story was amazing and can't wait to start the next in the series.

My rating: 5

While this book is the second in a series, you do not have to read the first book for this one to make sense, or to get the whole story. I feel like I knew everything I needed to know going into this story from the get-go; but now that I know who book one is about I will go back and read it soon as well! Just to see their story!

We start this book off with Emma - a girl who's heart was broken four years previous when her fiance was killed overseas, he was a soldier. She now lives in a house, training therapy dogs for veterans. She lives and works in her home, and Joey, her business partner is an ex-soldier as well - her fiance's best friend that was also injured in the same accident.

"Something has caused him to close off from everyone. Even something as gentle as a dog. And like that, my mind is made up. I'm going to help Isaiah Wright. I'm going to help him find whatever it is he's so obviously lost."

You see right away Emma has a type... when Isaiah walked into her life, there was an instant connection and attraction. Isaiah is a wounded soldier - he has some PTSD that he came home with from being in Special Forces. He made some bad decisions when he first got home, and is now in some severe therapy to help him return to normal living. He's got a brother he's extremely close to, and he's dealing with some other things that keep his anxiety levels pretty high. He's prone to some major panic attacks.

"The term soldier's heart was coined when someone determined going to war physically changed a person's heart. A previously healthy person would return damaged."

Isaiah's therapist is a friend of Joey's and thinks that helping train the dogs in this program of Emma's will help Isaiah with his anxiety and panic attacks. It gives the veterans some structure and a job to do, to keep them busy and away from the alcohol and drugs they used to just get by. Isaiah is a honey skinned black man, and at the very start talks about how he's not comfortable around dogs, that he's not "a dog person". He adapts very quickly and takes to this sweet pup named Jasper. He also wins the heart of the dog trainer, Emma, a beautiful blonde who's not sure she's ready for love again.

"I, Isaiah Wright, he who cannot be bothered with something as nonsensical as a pet, am completely head over heels in love. With a dog. And possibly his trainer..."

This story has it all... best girl friends who are completely supportive, family ties that are mended, soldiers dealing with the hurts and reality of real life and not combat life, injured friends struggling to survive, training dogs to help with therapy, romance, a really great steamy sex scene, and of course, an added level of dark suspense! Such a great read, and by the end I was completely invested in this relationship and was so excited when things ended how I wanted them to!

I really loved Megan Green's style of writing. She was very clear in how she wrote this story - and I liked that she made me FEEL how her characters were feeling, instead of just telling me how they felt.

My favorite quotes from the books was this, a part of Haylee and Ryan's vows (Emma's best friend and her husband, they get married early on in the book and Emma is a bridesmaid)!

"True love is about saving each other. It's holding on to each other on a cold winter night. It's laughing at your awful attempts at humor. It's watching John Hughes movies with me until you think your eyes are going to bleed... and it's being there for each other through it all. The good, the bad, the ugly, and the beautiful..." -Haylee

"What words could possibly convey the strength of the feelings I have for you? I searched high and low, in English, Spanish, French and Italian. And you know what I found? Nothing. There is not a single word in existence that rivals the power of the love I feel for you." -Ryan

So I don't know where to start with the review of this book. I guess can start with this book was not what I though it was going to be. Well kinda, I knew it was going to be about a solider and girl after his heart and lets not to leave out the service dogs. I LOVE DOGS!! I don't how to shout that more than i really love them. So i was excited to read this book once i read the synopsis of the book. I will dive in now.

Solider's Heart is about Isaiah Wright and Emma Nicholls Love. I want to say that it starts out heart and roses but it does not. Also I want to point out that is your use to reading romance novels that get right into the love and head over heels stuff, you need to just stop and slow down. What I really love is that book is not that. It actually tackles something that is not really discussed in out society enough. High Five Megan Green for that. What this book will give you is real problems that a solider is facing when coming out the military. Also those that are effected by PTSD.

Isaiah Wright is six months out of the military and it was not by choice. He is facing some demons that will forever haunt him. Not only in his mind but in the present. He has to live with the decisions that he made in the military and his time in Iraq. Now i don't want to give away what those demons are because in the book it takes a little bit for him to share that with us. He may be letting most of the problems that he is dealing with get the better on him, but he can't shake it. With help from his therapist he is sent to a place that he has not desire in going.

Emma Nicholls is a women with a broken heart and is trying to mend it the best she can with the help from some four-legged creatures. Emma lost her fiancé from a bombing in Iraq. He fiance Chris was in the Army and was deployed when a terrorist decided to run into their vehicle setitng off a bomb and killing her man. She has been having to live with the lost of you first love while everyone around her moves on. With the help from her friend Joey (he was also in the vehicle with Chris) and a dog named Maddie she is starting to heal. Keen Kennels is born. Emma and Joey breed dogs to become service dogs, their main goal is for veterans returning from Iraq and suffering from major PTSD but they also branch out for others if needed. That is when Tall, Dark and Handsome come in.

Isaiah is not happy to be around people and really not happy to be around animals either. When he meets emma he is kinda unsure what to expect, and nothing is what he gets. Emma is pretty mush star struck is how I want to put it. She has no idea who he is but i imagined the look on her face is what i would have if i saw George Straight or Tom Hardy. Of course there not blind and notice one another but what some next is pretty funny. Words said and tempers fly and i can't blame her. From here is where the story gets really good, of course your saying that always where it gets really good. I really loved how the story progressed from here. There are moments in the story that you want to just cry because you know that there are people out there that are really dealing with this hurt. I love how they help one another with their pain and grow with love. There is a little excitement of a mystery that has you guessing from the beginning. There is a little drama added on the already drama. This was a great read and was a really great chance of pace from previous book i have read lately. You will not be disappointed with this book at all. I hope that you read it and enjoy it. Please keep reading after the epilogue for some really great information.
I am posting this as a ARC and posting my honest review.

Melinda: Jennifer, I think you would like this book. There are puppies!

Me: PUPPIES! I have to read this book!

I’m more of a cat person but I love any story that involves animals. When Melinda told me puppies were involved, I knew I had to read this book.

This is the second book in the Wounded Love series. I have not read the first book (I bought it immediately after finishing this book and it’s on my TBR now) but I didn’t feel lost at all while reading Soldier’s Heart. I’m definitely going back and reading the first book though so I can see how the series began.

Surviving every soldier's worst nightmare is enough for Isaiah Wright to want nothing more than to give into the guilt that consumes him. Four years after losing her fiancé, Emma Nicholls also knows pain. Emma has set up her own business providing service dogs to veterans which brings Isaiah into her life. But Isaiah doesn’t like dogs! Say what?! Who doesn’t like dogs?! However, after prompting from his therapist he seeks out Emma and her dogs.

Of course the sparks fly between Isaiah and Emma. The only complaint I have about this book is what I felt was a lack of interaction between Emma and Isaiah, an establishing of their relationship. We see the passage of time but I didn’t feel like the time they spent together was about really getting to know each other. Maybe I missed it between all the cute puppy antics? It made their love story slightly unbelievable. Although I appreciate the fact that there was a slow build up to their relationship. I enjoy love stories a lot more when the characters don't run straight to bed but instead get to know one another first. There’s also a mystery element to the story, which I loved. It added some great suspense. And what’s going on with Emma’s friend and business partner, Joey? I hope Ms. Green will tell his story in an upcoming book.

Anytime I read a book regarding our military I’m always struck again by how much members of our military give for our country.

“I still think soldier’s heart is a great metaphor. Because while your hearts might not physically change like they once believed, not a single one of you comes back the same man you were before you left. Not damaged. Just changed. You can’t go through something like war and combat and expect to be unaffected by it. It’s not possible. You all leave with civilian hearts. But you return with the hearts of soldiers. Hearts full of loss. Of fear and sadness. But also full of bravery and strength. You put your life on the line for the lives and freedom of others.”

The animal lover in me LOVED this book. There were several heartbreaking scenes between Isaiah and the dogs. Have your tissues ready!

“My dog is like one of my children. I’d be a nervous wreck if something happened to him. Some people don’t understand these animals are more than pets to us. They’re family.”
Do you love soldier’s, puppies and a good romance story? Then go grab your copy of Soldier’s Heart now.

I was provided a copy of this book by the author in exchange for my honest review.
